Diocese of Karlstad
The Diocese of Karlstad ( Swedish Karlstads stift ) is one of the thirteen dioceses within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden . It goes back to the superintendent of Mariestad , which was spun off from the diocese of Skara in 1580 as a separate supervisory district . 1647 after the seat was moved to Karlstad and the Karlstad cathedral was declared a bishop's church; In 1658, through exchanges of territory, the diocese was essentially given the size it still has today. Only northern Bohuslän , which only came to Sweden in 1658, was ceded to the Diocese of Gothenburg in 1693 . The superintendents have had the title of bishop since 1772.
Geographically, the diocese extends over the historical province of Värmland , large parts of Dalsland and a small part of the province of Närke . It consists of 85 parishes ( församlingar ), which are divided into six church districts ( kontrakt ). The diocese includes 263,469, which corresponds to about 79.8% of the resident population (as of 2017).
Sören Dalevi has been the bishop of the diocese since 2016 .
