Diocese of Härnösand

The Diocese of Härnösand ( Swedish Härnösands stift ) is one of the thirteen dioceses within the Church of Sweden . It was founded in 1647 when the northern part of the Uppsala Archdiocese was placed under the supervision of its own superintendent . The spiritual leaders have had the title of bishop since 1772 . In 1904 the northern part was again separated to form the Luleå diocese .

Geographically, the diocese extends over the historical provinces of Jämtland , Härjedalen , Medelpad and Ångermanland . It consists of eight church districts ( kontrakt ), which in turn consist of 101 parishes ( församlingar ). In 2012 there were around 368,000 people living in the diocese area, 78% of whom were members of the Church of Sweden.

The bishopric is the city of Härnösand with the Härnösand cathedral as the episcopal church. From 2009 to 2014 Tuulikki Koivunen Bylund was bishop of the diocese, the first woman in this office and the fourth bishop in the Church of Sweden. Her successor in office was Eva Nordung Byström .
