Rui (canal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A rui is an open canal ( canal ) for inner-city supply and transport. In the Middle Ages , these channels were also used as sewers, which encouraged the spread of epidemics .

In the 19th century , the Ruien were roofed over in many cities, such as Antwerp , which led to a reduction in their canal and sewage function. The underground vaults have now often been converted into tourist attractions with opportunities for boat tours and canal walks. Other cities such as Brugge or Amsterdam left the canals open and still use them as transport routes.
