Medelpad is a historical province ( Swedish landskap ) in the part of Norrland . Medelpad borders Hälsingland in the south, Härjedalen in the west, Jämtland in the northwest and Ångermanland in the north . Together with Ångermanland, Medelpad forms today's province (Swedish län ) Västernorrlands län .
Medelpad is home to 2600 preserved antiquities, u. a. Kvissle-Nolby-Prästbolet and the Nolbystenen south of Sundsvall.
The power and economic center of northern Sweden was located in the Medelpad until early modern times. The Selångers-Fjord, which is now silted up, was the decisive feature of the landscape, and it is assumed that the name Medelpad meant the beach area of the former Kungsnäs peninsula and meant "beach area in the middle". The cult of Olav the Saint also had a Swedish focus here, as the most important pilgrimage to Nidaros began here. Medelpad's seal from the 16th century contains a processional flag with the Olavs ax in the center. It was replaced around 1600 by a seal with two streams and two opposing fish. Until the 16th century it was a letter seal with a stylized "M" in the middle.
The geographic center of Sweden is in Medelpad . But it is considered to be part of northern Sweden.
