Svealand
Svealand , roughly central Sweden in terms of geography , is the middle of the three parts of Sweden ( landsdelar ) .
To the subject
Svealand includes the historic provinces of Dalarna , Västmanland , Uppland , Värmland , Närke and Södermanland . It used to include Gästrikland , which is now part of Norrland , and the Åland Islands , which are now part of the Republic of Finland .
The area has an area of 91,098 km² and a population of 3,610,400 (as of December 31, 2007).
Svealand used to be the name of the area where the Svear spreads around Lake Mälaren . The Swedish name of Sweden, Sverige , roughly means the kingdom of the Svea and refers to the Svealand region. The oldest Swedish name was probably Sväthiud and is based on the Icelandic Svithiod , the people who meant Svear .
In today's Sweden, the division into parts of the country is of marginal interest. It is mainly used in meteorology and in summary statistics . In the NUTS breakdown, the following Riksområdena (imperial areas) are used - somewhat more comprehensively - for the area of central Sweden ( Mellansverige in Swedish ):
- Stockholm / Stockholm County (SE11 / SE110)
- Östra Mellansverige (SE12 'East Central Sweden') with Uppsala (SE311), Södermanlands (SE122), Östergötlands (SE123), Örebro (SE124) and Västmanlands län (SE125)
- Norra Mellansverige (SE31 'North Central Sweden') with Värmlands (SE311), Dalarnas (SE312) and Gävleborgs län (SE313)
