The city's first church was built in 1593. With the appointment of Johannes Canuti Lenaeus as archbishop , it became the episcopal church of the Diocese of Härnösand in 1647 . The old church was burned down by Russian troops in 1721 and today's cathedral was built in the same place. The construction was based on drawings by the architect Johan Hawerman and was completed in 1846.
organ
The organ of the cathedral goes back to an instrument that was built in the 18th century. The magnificent organ prospectus and some registers have been preserved . Today's organ was built in 1975 by the Danish organ builder Bruno Christenssen. It has 56 stops on four manual works and a pedal .
