Career

Horst Rascher grew up in Ulm and started boxing at SSV Ulm as a teenager. His coach at the time was Josef Ritzel. In 1958 he was already one of the best German junior boxers. But as a junior he has not yet won a German championship title. But this changed in 1959, because he became German bantamweight champion in November that year in Munich with a point victory over Otto Schröck from Schweinfurt . Before that, however, he had already landed another big coup, because he qualified for the European Amateurs Championship in Lucerne that spring . In Lucerne, the young, only nineteen-year-old athlete boxed carefree, won three preliminary rounds and became European champion by winning points in the final battle over the Soviet athlete Oleg Grigoryevich Grigoryev .

For this he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by the Federal President on June 1, 1959.

In 1960, Horst Rascher prevailed against the representative of the GDR Heinz Schulz from ASK "Vorwärts" Berlin in the elimination for the all-German Olympic team and represented Germany at the Olympic Games in Rome . In Rome he narrowly missed a medal. He defeated Marcel Bellefeille from Canada on points in a preliminary round match and also won the round of 16 against Jozef Nagy from Hungary on points. In the quarterfinals he met Brunon Bendig from Poland . In a balanced fight, in which the winner could also have been Horst Rascher, the judges gave Brunon Bendig a narrow 3-2 win.

In November 1960, Horst Rascher, who had meanwhile switched to Karlsruher SC, won his second German bantamweight championship title by winning points over Paul Budde from MBR Hamm .

At the European Championships in Belgrade in May 1961 , Horst Rascher had a pitch-black day in his first fight, because he lost the fight against the Englishman Peter Bennyworth, whom he had clearly defeated in an international match in London in January 1961 , on points and divorced out. Horst Rascher also suffered a defeat in the final battle of the German championship in November 1961 in Berlin . He lost to two-time European flyweight champion Manfred Homberg from Düsseldorf on points.

In 1962 there were no international championships. At the German championship in Iserlohn in June 1962 , Horst Rascher won his third title by winning points over Erich Müller from Singen .

In 1963, the German championships took place in May and were considered qualifications for the European championships in Moscow . Horst Rascher, who started again for SSV Ulm, won in Freiburg im Breisgau over Dieter Heide from Rosenheim by knocking out in the 3rd round. At the European Championship, Horst Rascher suffered another first round defeat. The Romanian Niculae Puiu turned out to be too strong for him.

In April 1964 Horst Rascher was again German bantamweight champion in Munich . He defeated Günter Geisler from Rünthe / Westphalia on points. Then Horst Rascher disappointed in qualifying for the all-German Olympic team for Tokyo , because he lost to Rainer Poser from SC "Dynamo" Berlin and missed the ticket to the Olympic Games.

In 1965 Horst Rascher won the German bantamweight championship in Hanover again over Günter Geisler. He then also convinced at the European Championships in East Berlin, because he won a bronze medal there . On the way to this medal he defeated Borje Karvonen from Finland in the round of 16 and Neurath from the CSSR in the quarter-finals, each on points. In the semifinals, he suffered a narrow point defeat against Jan Gałązka from Poland .

At the beginning of 1966, Horst Rascher, who had learned the profession of technical draftsman, moved to Villingen for professional reasons , because he got a good position as a form designer in the SABA factories there. In the boxing sector, he managed to win his seventh title at a German championship this year. In Duisburg he won the final against Manfred Werner from BSK 26 Suderwich on points.

In April 1967 Horst Rascher won the German championship in Münster in the final of the bantamweight over Josef Timmermanns from Rheinhausen by knocking out in the 2nd round. At this year's European Championships in Rome , Horst Rasche defeated Sammy Vernon from Ireland , Tony Glencross from Scotland and Nikolai Sawow from Bulgaria on points and was in the final against Nicolae Gîju from Romania . Rascher and Gîju were very experienced and technically excellent boxers, who fought an even fight, at the end of which Gîju received a narrow point victory. Horst Rascher was thus Vice European Champion .

Horst Rascher won his ninth German championship title in Cologne in 1968 . He won there in bantamweight over Siegwart Steger from Sulzbach-Rosenberg on points. His big goal was then to win a medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . He won in Mexico in the round of 16 over John Dadigi from Nigeria by techn. KO in the 1st round and landed a narrow 3-2 point win over Sulley Shittu from Ghana in the quarterfinals . In the quarter-finals, he met a physically extremely strong Korean named Chang Kyu Chul. After a tough argument, the Korean was awarded a 5-0 point victory and Horst Rascher was eliminated just before winning a medal. As in 1960, he finished fifth in the final with three other boxers.

After these Olympic Games, Horst Rascher ended his boxer career. He had fought almost 300 fights and won another very special difficult fight again and again, namely the fight for the body weight of 54 kg, which he had to bring as a bantamweight. After his playing days, he found ample opportunity to relax in his fishing hobby.
