Brunon Bendig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brunon Bendig (born October 6, 1938 in Chełmno , † September 15, 2006 in Danzig ) was a Polish boxer . He won a bronze medal in bantamweight at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 and was vice European champion in 1965 in Berlin in featherweight.

Career

Brunon Bendig began boxing in 1955 at the LZS Starogard sports club . His first coach there was Kazimierz Grzywarz. A little later he switched to MKS Wisla Tczew (Dirschau) . In the course of his career he started for Zawisza Bydgoszcz (Bromberg) , Gedania Gdańsk (Danzig) and Polonia Gdańsk . He was looked after by the coaches Jozef Kruza , Kazimierczak, Rinke and Karnath and came into the hands of Felik's tribe in the Polish national squadron of boxers, to which he had belonged since 1959, who had a large share in his successes. Brunon Bendig learned the trade of a locksmith and was initially employed by the Polish State Railways before joining the Polish army.

Brunon Bendig was 1.69 meters tall for the bantam weight (up to 54 kg body weight), in which he started for a long time, an unusually slim boxer who lived primarily on his excellent technique, while he lacked punching power. Another advantage was its great range. From 1965 he switched to featherweight (up to 57 kg body weight) in order to avoid the constant strain of training. In 1959 Brunon Bendig played his first international match for Poland and won over Husein Useinovic from Yugoslavia on points. In 1960 he also took part in the Polish championship for the first time. He suffered a low blow in his quarter-final bantamweight fight against Stanislaw Dzienis, which made his disqualification necessary. Surprisingly, he was still nominated for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . Although he was quite inexperienced internationally, he convinced in Rome and won with points over John Sentongo, Uganda (5: 0), Johannes De Rooij, Netherlands (5: 0) and European Champion Horst Rascher from the Federal Republic of Germany (3: 2) and a point defeat in the semifinals against Oleg Grigorjewitsch Grigorjew from the Soviet Union (1: 4) a bronze medal .

At the Polish championship in 1961, Brunon Bendig surprisingly lost in the semifinals against Teofil Kowalski. At the European Championship in 1961 he was then not used. But he won the bantamweight tournament at the 2nd Railway Championship of the Railways of the Warsaw Pact States in Magdeburg . In an international match against Hungary in Budapest he suffered a point defeat against Gyula Török , the flyweight Olympic champion in Rome.

In 1962 he won his first Polish bantamweight championship with a point win over Stanislaw Dzienis. In 1962 he was also a member of the Polish national team that fought against the Federal Republic of Germany in Munich . He lost his fight against European champion Manfred Homberg from Düsseldorf on points.

In 1963 he was again Polish bantamweight champion with a points win in the final over Henryk Mielczewski. At the European Championships in Moscow in 1963 , he was back in the bantamweight division. He lost there in his first fight against Michailo Mitsew from Bulgaria and only reached 9th place. Towards the end of 1963, however, he achieved a great success, because he defeated Olympic champion Oleg Grigoryev from the USSR on points in the final battle of the 4th championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact states in Lodz . In an international match against the FRG in Wrocław, he beat Horst Rascher from Karlsruhe on points.

Brunon Bendig won the third Polish bantamweight championship title in 1964. He defeated Henryk Mielczewski on points as in 1963. At the Olympic Games this year in Tokyo he won his first fight over the good GDR boxer Rainer Poser by just a few points (3: 2 judges' votes), but then lost to the unknown Karimu Young from Nigeria with the same result in the second round out and only came in 9th place.

In 1965 Brunon Bendig switched to featherweight and also won the fourth Polish championship title in this new weight class. Again his final opponent was Henryk Mielczewski, whom he clearly scored. At the European Championships in 1965 in Berlin (East), he made his last start in an international championship. He won there over Kenneth Israelsson from Sweden , Constantin Stanew from Romania and Wolfgang Huebner from the GDR and faced the 1964 Olympic champion Stanislaw Stepanowitsch Stepaschkin from the Soviet Union in the final . Stepaschkin won this fight clearly on points and Brunon Bendig won the EM silver medal .

In 1967 he started for the last time in a Polish championship, but was eliminated in the featherweight division in the quarterfinals with a point defeat against Jan Wadas and only reached 5th place.

Then he ended his boxing career. Brunon Bendig later got serious alcohol problems, which also led to the failure of his marriage. With the help of some friends from his boxing days, he overcame it and lived as a pensioner in Gdansk until he died in 2006.
