The European Formula 3 Championship was a racing series organized by the FIA . It was originally held from 1975 to 1984 and was considered the most important Formula 3 championship at the time . In 2012 the FIA reintroduced the championship. In the 2018 season , the competition was held in this form for the last time due to the impending introduction of the FIA Formula 3 Championship .
Starting in 2019, the Formula European Masters was to be held instead of the European Formula 3 Championship , but the racing series did not materialize due to a lack of drivers. All races should have been held as part of the DTM .
history
The series was founded in 1966 as an annual racing event for European national teams under the name "Formula 3 Nations European Cup". In 1975 the series was expanded to a championship with 2-liter engines.
The series was discontinued in 1984, the successor is the European Formula 3 Cup , which started as an annual individual race from 1985 to 2002, and the Formula 3 Euro Series founded in 2003 . In 2012, however, the European Formula 3 Championship was reintroduced. After the end of the 2018 season , the racing series was merged with the GP3 series to form the FIA Formula 3 championship .
