Lando Norris (born November 13, 1999 in Bristol , England ) is a British racing driver . He became world kart champion in 2014 . In 2015 he won the British Formula 4 championship , in 2016 he won the Toyota Racing Series , the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Northern European Formula Renault . He won the European Formula 3 Championship in 2017 . In 2018 , Norris was runner-up in the FIA Formula 2 Championship . He has been competing in the Formula 1 World Championship for McLaren since 2019 .

Career

Norris began his motorsport career in karting in 2007 , where he remained active until 2014. Among other things, he was champion of the CIK-FIA-Kart-European Championship, the WSK Euro Series and the CIK-FIA-Super-Cup at junior level in 2013. In 2014, Norris drove at senior level in karting. He finished third in the European Championship and, at the age of 14, was the youngest driver to become world kart champion . In 2014 he also drove for HHC Motorsport in the Ginetta Junior Championship , where he came third.

2015 Norris joined the single-seater racing and was at Carlin a cockpit in the newly founded British Formula 4 Championship . He won eight races and decided the championship with 413 to 371 points against Ricky Collard for himself. He also drove for Mücke Motorsport on three race weekends each of the German and Italian Formula 4 championships , winning one race in Germany. He also took part in an event of the autumn series of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship with HHC Motorsport and won two races.

At the beginning of 2016 , Norris competed in the New Zealand Toyota Racing Series for M2 Competition . He won six races and won the championship with 924 to 792 points against Jehan Daruvala . Then Norris completed a triple program in Europe. For Josef Kaufmann Racing he competed in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Northern European Formula Renault . In the Eurocup he won five races and was on the podium a total of twelve times. With 253 to 200 points, he won the championship ahead of Dorian Boccolacci . In the Northern European Formula Renault, he won six races and achieved a total of eleven podium finishes. Here he was champion with 326 to 285 points ahead of Max Defourny . In addition, Norris started for Carlin to four events of the British Formula 3 Championship . He achieved four wins and was eighth in the drivers' championship. He also made three guest starts for Carlin in the European Formula 3 Championship and he took part in the Macau Grand Prix . For his successes, Norris was awarded the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award and Autosport British Club Driver of the Year at the end of the year .

In 2017 , Norris competed for Carlin in the European Formula 3 championship and immediately won the championship. He was also accepted into the sponsorship program of the Formula 1 racing team McLaren .

In early 2018, he started for the team United Autosport in which the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship scoring 24 Hours of Daytona . Together with Fernando Alonso and Philip Hanson , he finished 38th overall and 13th in the prototype class. In the further course of the year he took part with Carlin Motorsport in the FIA ​​Formula 2 Championship, in the overall ranking of which he took 2nd place.

Norris made his Formula 1 debut at McLaren in 2019. His team-mate was Carlos Sainz Jr. For his career in Formula 1, he chose 4 as his permanent starting number. Norris finished his first race in Australia in twelfth place. At the subsequent Bahrain Grand Prix he scored his first points in sixth place. At the end of the season he finished eleventh in the drivers' championship with 49 points.

In addition to his career in formula racing, Norris competes in simulator races for Team Redline. His teammates include Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen . It starts mainly in iRacing.com . Verstappen and Norris won the 2019 Spa 24-hour race organized by iRacing.

After the start of the 2020 season was postponed from March ( Australia ) to July due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Norris finished fourth in the opening race in Austria . Because of a five-second penalty from Lewis Hamilton , he was classified as third. This was the first time he was on the podium in Formula 1. In the last lap, he also drove the fastest lap in his Formula 1 career for the first time. After the seventh race, he is currently in sixth place in the drivers' standings with 45 points.
