Antonio Giovinazzi (born December 14, 1993 in Martina Franca ) is an Italian racing driver . He competed in the European Formula 3 championship from 2013 to 2015 . In 2016 he drove in the GP2 series . In 2017 he made his debut in Formula 1 , which has been a regular driver for Alfa Romeo Racing since 2019 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport

Giovinazzi began his motorsport career in karting in 2001 , where he was active until 2012. Among other things, he was third in the 2011 CIK-FIA-KF2 World Cup. In 2012, the family of his teammate Sean Gelael began to support him financially. The two competed for the same teams in the same championship for the next three years. 2012 changed Giovinazzi in Formula racing and entered in the Formula Pilota China Series for Eurasia Motorsport on. At the first event in Sepang , Giovinazzi managed to win the race from pole position in each of the three races and set the fastest race lap. With a total of six wins and thirteen podium finishes, Giovinazzi won the championship in his debut season. With 229 to 179 points he prevailed against Dan Wells . He also made three guest starts in Formula Abarth for BVM . Giovinazzi won two races and finished second once. Since he was a guest starter, he received no points for these results.

In 2013 Giovinazzi switched completely back to Europe and started for Double R Racing in the European Formula 3 championship . He finished the season in 17th place overall and was the only driver on his team to score points. In addition, Giovinazzi was active for Double R Racing in the British Formula 3 Championship in 2013 . There he won two races and was on the podium a total of seven times. With 135 to 176 points he was runner-up behind Jordan King . In 2014 Giovinazzi contested his second season in the European Formula 3 championship for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin . The racing stable was looked after by Carlin and financed by the Gelael family. Giovinazzi and Gelael received Tom Blomqvist as teammates and mentors. Giovinazzi won two races and was on the podium five more times. While Blomqvist finished second, Giovinazzi improved to sixth place in the drivers' standings.

In 2015 Giovinazzi stayed with Jagonya Ayam with Carlin in the European Formula 3 Championship. Although Gelael was no longer his teammate, his family continued to support him. He was always on the podium in the first nine races and won a race in Hockenheim and the Grand Prix de Pau . This was followed by further victories in Nuremberg , Zandvoort , Spielberg and Hockenheim. He finished the season with 412.5 to 508 points behind Felix Rosenqvist in second place. In 2015 , Giovinazzi also took part in a DTM race weekend as a substitute for the suspended Timo Scheider for Audi Sport Team Phoenix . In the winter of 2015/16 , Giovinazzi and Gelael contested two races in the Asian Le Mans Series , which they both won. They came third in the LMP2 drivers' championship.

GP2

In 2016 Giovinazzi moved to Prema Racing in the GP2 series with the support of the Gelael family . He won both races in Baku and one each at Spa-Francorchamps , Monza and Sepang . With five wins, no driver has won more races than him. In the championship he was nevertheless defeated by his teammate Pierre Gasly with 211 to 219 points and was second overall.

In the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship , Giovinazzi was the third driver of Scuderia Ferrari . He also completed test drives for Sauber and was also active there as a substitute pilot. In this role he made his Grand Prix debut as a substitute for Pascal Wehrlein at the Australian Grand Prix and finished twelfth. He also represented Wehrlein in China , but resigned. He also took part in six free training sessions for Haas. In 2018 Giovinazzi was a test and development driver at Ferrari .

For the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship , Giovinazzi received a regular cockpit at Sauber. The racing team started as Alfa Romeo Racing due to title sponsorship . He chose 99 as his permanent starting number. At the Austrian Grand Prix , he scored his first point in Formula 1 in tenth. In Brazil , he achieved his best result so far in fifth. At the end of the season he finished 17th overall with 14 points.

In 2020 he will start again for the team. As in the previous year, Kimi Räikkönen is his team-mate. After the seventh race, he is currently 15th in the drivers' standings with two points.
