report

backgrounds

After the Singapore Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 28 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 51 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was ahead of Ferrari with 102 points and Red Bull Racing with 245 points .

At the Malaysian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, there were only minor changes to the route to increase safety. In turn one , turn six , turn nine , turn 13 and turn 15 additional tire stacks were placed.

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the back straight and starts 104 meters after turn 14 . The measuring point for this zone was 54 meters after turn twelve . The second DRS zone was on the directly following start-finish straight and began 28 meters behind curve 15 . The measuring point of the first DRS zone was used for the second DRS zone. It could happen that after an overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the pilot who was then in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.

For the first time in this race, Williams used the latest version of the Mercedes-AMG F1 M08 EQ Power + , which the works team had been using since the Belgian Grand Prix .

Pierre Gasly made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship at Toro Rosso , replacing Daniil Kwjat .

Kevin Magnussen , Vettel (seven each), Jolyon Palmer (six), Stoffel Vandoorne (five), Nico Hülkenberg (four), Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen , Carlos Sainz jr. , Max Verstappen (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Esteban Ocon and Pascal Wehrlein (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Vettel (four times), Fernando Alonso (three times), Räikkönen (twice), Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Steve Stringwell (GBR), Danny Sullivan (USA) and James Leong Weng Hoon (MAS).

free training

In the first free practice session, which took place in the rain, Verstappen was fastest with a lap time of 1: 48.962 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Alonso. In the first 30 minutes of training there was no driving, only the safety car drove several laps. When training was then approved, it took another 30 minutes for the first pilots to complete timed laps. The reason for this was that rain was forecast for the rest of the race weekend and the number of rain tires was limited.

In the second free practice session, which was held on a dry track, Vettel was fastest in 1: 31.261 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Ricciardo. The training was stopped around 20 minutes before the end after an accident by Grosjean. Grosjean had driven over a manhole cover in the area of the curbs at turn 13 , which had previously come loose, and suffered a tire damage, lost control of his vehicle and hit the barrier. It was not possible to repair the manhole cover in the remaining time.

Raikkonen was fastest in the third free practice with a lap time of 1: 31.880 minutes ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest, but used the soft mix , just like Verstappen, Bottas and Raikkonen in places two to four . All the other drivers drove supersoft . Vettel did not drive a timed lap due to a technical defect, so he did not qualify for the race. Besides him, the Sauber and Haas drivers retired.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Bottas was the fastest. The Toro Rosso and Williams pilots and Palmer were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 30.076 minutes, ahead of Raikkonen and Verstappen. It was Hamilton's 70th pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship.

After qualifying, the combustion engine, MGU-H and turbocharger of Vettel's vehicle were changed. Since it was the fifth copy this season, he was moved back 20 starting places.

run

Raikkonen reported a loss of performance on his Ferrari while driving on the grid. After a quick troubleshooting session on the grid, the team decided to put the vehicle in the pits to further investigate the problem. As it was not possible to repair the vehicle in time, Raikkonen did not start the race. The Sauber pilots and Vettel started on Soft , all other drivers on Supersoft .

Hamilton stayed in the lead at the start, followed by Bottas briefly past both Red Bull drivers, but then had to let Verstappen pass again. In midfield there was a collision between Ocon and Massa, in which Ocon's front wing was damaged. At the end of the first lap, Hamilton was leading ahead of Verstappen, Bottas, Ricciardo, Vandoorne, Pérez, Ocon, Stroll, Massa and Magnussen.

Ocon, who suffered a creeping flat tire in the collision with Massa, drove into the pits at the end of the second lap and switched to the soft mix. He fell back to the end of the field.

On the fourth lap, Verstappen overtook Hamilton and took the lead. In the eighth lap Ricciardo Bottas and was now in third place. Vettel overtook several pilots in midfield and was already in the points at this point. From the eleventh lap onwards, Massa, Stroll and Vandoorne went to the pits one lap to change their tires, all of whom drove directly in front of Vettel. Vandoorne, who was the last of the three drivers to change tires, came out of the pit lane when Stroll wanted to overtake Massa at the end of the start-finish straight. With both Williams pilots interfering with each other, Vandoorne stayed ahead of them.

Vettel now caught up with Pérez and overtook him on lap 21, then shortened the gap to Bottas. Ocon drove behind Sainz and attacked him on lap 25 on the outside at turn one . The vehicles touched and Ocon turned.

On lap 26, Hamilton and Alonso pitted to change tires, Hamilton came back on track, ahead of Bottas, in third place. A lap later, Verstappen and Vettel changed tires, Verstappen to Soft and Vettel to Supersoft . Verstappen fell back to second place behind Ricciardo, and Vettel to sixth place behind Pérez.

Another lap later, Bottas switched to Soft and fell behind Vettel, another lap later Ricciardo also switched to Soft and was back in third place. On the 30th lap, Pérez, the last driver in the points position, changed tires.

Vettel, who was around 14 seconds behind Ricciardo after the pit stops, then drove the fastest lap of the race several times and sometimes caught up with Ricciardo by more than a second per lap. On lap 46 he was within striking distance for the first time, but could not start an attack at first. In the 49th lap he attacked Ricciardo, who defended himself. In the following rounds that made Super Soft tires of Vettel by strong, he fell in the last seven rounds a total of 15 seconds behind Ricciardo back.

Verstappen won the race ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. It was the second victory for Verstappen in the Formula 1 World Championship after the Spanish Grand Prix in 2016 . For Hamilton it was the tenth and for Ricciardo the eighth podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Bottas, Pérez, Vandoorne, Stroll, Massa and Ocon.

In the run-out lap there was a collision between Stroll and Vettel, who wanted to overtake Stroll on the outside and was hit by Stroll on the left rear wheel.

Hamilton increased his lead in the drivers' standings over Vettel and Bottas. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes increased its lead over Ferrari, Red Bull caught up on both teams, but was still more than 100 points behind Ferrari.
