The Haas VF-17 is the Formula 1 - racing car of Haas for Formula 1 World Cup 2017 . It is the team's second Formula 1 car and was presented to the public on February 26, 2017.

The name of the car is a reference to the VF-1, the first CNC machine that Haas Automation produced. Although the V stands for vertical , the name of the machine was used in-house as an abbreviation for Very First One (German: Allererste ).

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the VF-17 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.

The VF-17 is the successor to the Haas VF-16 . Since the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, most of the vehicle has been redeveloped. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.

With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Essential components relevant to airflow are new, such as the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, the rear wing , whose width changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and whose height changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, and the diffuser , which is now 175 mm instead of 125 mm high and with 1050 mm 50 mm wider. To improve the air flow to the rear wing, the car has a noticeable fin on the engine cover. In addition, a wing is attached to the end of this fin .

Is driven to the VF-17 from Ferrari 062 , an in vehicle center -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Ferrari with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The sequential gearbox of the Ferrari car has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

Unlike the previous model, the VF-17 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels. This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the VF-17.

Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the VF-17 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

Painting and sponsorship

The VF-17 is mainly painted in gray, black and red. In order to be able to better distinguish the VF-17 from other vehicles, the team will dispense with a large part of the red accents from the Monaco Grand Prix .

Haas Automation, the company of team owner Gene Haas , advertises on the side pods and the rear wing, Richard Mille on the side of the vehicle nose and the wind tunnel operator Windshear on the front wings.

driver

Haas will compete with drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen in the 2017 season . Grosjean is in his second season for the team, Magnussen moved from Renault to Haas, replacing Esteban Gutiérrez .
