The Sahara Force India F1 Team ( Force India for short ) was a Formula 1 racing team with an Indian license based in Silverstone, England . It was the first Indian team in Formula 1 history. Force India was created through the takeover of the Spyker team by Indian industrialist Vijay Mallya in 2007. Spyker itself emerged in 2006 from the Russian Midland Team , which had succeeded the traditional Jordan Grand Prix team the year before . In October 2011, the Indian company Sahara India Pariwar took over 42.5 percent of the shares in the racing team and has since been used in the reporting name.
Force India has been competing with customer engines from Mercedes since 2009 . In the same year, the team achieved its first podium through Giancarlo Fisichella . At the beginning of the 2017 season , the water filter specialist BWT AG became the team's main sponsor. As a result, the paintwork of the racing car also changed, the basic color of which was now pink. As in the previous year, Force India competed in the 2018 season with drivers Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon .
After bankruptcy , the team retired from the Formula 1 World Championship in the middle of the 2018 season, and the starting place went to the newly founded team Racing Point Force India .

History of origin
At the beginning of 2005, the Russian businessman Alexander Shnaider took over the majority stake in the Team Jordan Grand Prix, founded in 1991, for allegedly $ 60 million from Eddie Jordan . In the 2006 season, the racing team was renamed Midland F1 Racing (MF1 for short). The team drove with a Russian license this year. On the occasion of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on September 10, 2006, a consortium around the Dutch vehicle manufacturer Spyker Cars NV and the entrepreneur Michiel Mol took over the racing team. The purchase price was quoted at $ 106 million. The team retained the Russian license for the remainder of the 2006 season and competed in the last three races of the year under the name Spyker MF1 Racing . At the beginning of the 2007 season the name was changed to Spyker F1; the team started this year under a Dutch racing license. Spyker ran into economic difficulties in 2007. On August 14, 2007, the Spyker team issued an official press release announcing that Team Director Michiel Mol had left the team and spoke for the first time of a possible sale of the team. A consortium around Mol and the Indian businessman Vijay Mallya, who owns the United Breweries Group and the airline Kingfisher Airlines , then submitted an offer to buy, which was accepted by the Spyker board of directors. On October 5, 2007, the change of ownership took place, but the team ended the season under the name Spyker. On the sidelines of the race in Brazil, the team's new name for 2008, Force India , was announced. Force India is the first Formula 1 racing team to compete with an Indian racing license.
2008
The team began their first season as Force India with familiar material. The car was the Force India VJM01 . Technically, it largely corresponded to last year's Spyker , but had a partially new body, which also included a greatly extended engine cover. As in the previous year, an eight-cylinder engine from Ferrari served as the drive source . Colin Kolles , who had already filled this role at Midland and Spyker, remained team boss . Adrian Sutil , who had a contract for the 2008 season from the Spyker days , was taken over as a regular driver. For the occupation of the second cockpit, Force India organized a so-called shoot-out with a total of seven pilots, in which Roldán Rodríguez , Giedo van der Garde (2007 test driver at Spyker), Franck Montagny (test driver at Toyota Racing ), Christian Klien (test driver at Honda Racing F1 ), Giancarlo Fisichella (regular driver at Renault F1 ), Vitantonio Liuzzi (regular driver at Scuderia Toro Rosso ) and Ralf Schumacher (regular driver at Toyota Racing). However, Schumacher stated after the test that he had only done his friend Vijay Mallya a favor and only tested the Force India, but not participated in the shoot-out, since Force India was not an option for him. Fisichella was ultimately the second regular driver; Liuzzi became a test driver.
The team's budget for the 2008 season was about $ 120 million, $ 50 million more than Spyker's budget the previous year. The budget increase, however, did not work in favor of the team. In 2008, Force India once again clearly undercut the weak performance of the previous team. At the start of the season, Force India had announced that the primary goal of the year would be to beat Honda- related rival Super Aguri team . This target became obsolete after Aguri Suzuki's team had to cease operations before the fifth race of the season. Force India 2008 did not come close to the other teams. While in one of the most balanced Formula 1 seasons for a long time every other team was able to score at least one podium and all drivers of these teams were able to score points, Force India remained completely without World Championship points. The best result was Fisichella's tenth place at the Spanish Grand Prix . The only bright spot in Monaco was Sutil , who was fourth in the chaotic race shortly before the end, but ultimately retired prematurely after a collision with Kimi Räikkönen .
2009
For the 2009 season , Sutil and Fisichella were confirmed as regular drivers and Liuzzi was again used as test drivers.
There were some changes in the team for this season. The co-owner Vijay Mallya took over the post of team manager from Colin Kolles , and Mike Gascoyne was replaced as technical director. At the same time, the contract for the supply of engines with Ferrari was terminated . On November 10, 2008, the team announced the cooperation with McLaren and Daimler AG : transmissions, hydraulics, KERS and other areas will be supplied by the McLaren Formula 1 team and engines from Mercedes-Benz HPE .
On August 29th at the Belgian Grand Prix , Fisichella surprisingly achieved the first and only pole position for the team. Fisichella finished second in the race, which was the greatest success for the team. A few days later, Fisichella's contract was terminated with immediate effect at his request so that he could switch to Ferrari to replace the injured regular driver Felipe Massa . For Fisichella, Liuzzi drove alongside Sutil for the rest of the season.
At the Italian Grand Prix , Adrian Sutil managed to achieve a starting position in the front row for the first time - he started the race from second on the grid. Liuzzi could also surprise with starting position seven. In the race, however, Liuzzi retired early from the race due to a gearbox damage, while Sutil reached fourth place. He also drove the fastest lap of the race.
In the further course of the season, the performance decreased again and no further World Cup points could be achieved.
2010
For the 2010 season , Force India stuck to the two regular drivers Sutil and Liuzzi. Development work was stopped for the last races; the team instead focused on working on the car for the coming season. Nevertheless, Force India had a realistic chance of finishing sixth in the constructors' championship by the end of the season. Only in the last race of the year did the team have to admit defeat to the Williams team, which scored one championship point more in the overall standings. Force India finished the season in seventh place in the constructors' championship, achieving the best result in team history to date.
2011
For the 2011 season , Liuzzi was initially the only pilot who had a contract with the team. Force India, however, terminated the contract before the season and instead signed Paul di Resta , who had already participated in several Friday training sessions in 2010 and won the DTM championship title for the Mercedes team HWA in the 2010 season . Some observers saw di Resta's commitment as a connection with the extension of the engine contract with Mercedes. Liuzzi received compensation, which he used in large part to buy into troubled Hispania Racing team for 2011 . The contract with Sutil, however, was extended. Nico Hülkenberg joined the team as a test driver and occasionally took part in Friday training sessions.
The first races of the season were successful. Sutil and di Resta regularly finished in the points. Force India finished the season sixth in the constructors' championship, the best result in the team's history. Force India left established racing teams like Sauber and Williams behind. The gap to the fifth-placed Renault team was only four points.
2012
Adrian Sutil left Force India for the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship . Hülkenberg and di Resta formed the new driver pairing, Jules Bianchi was the test driver . Force India achieved seventh place in the constructors' championship with 109 points. In the last race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix , Hulkenberg led the race for 30 laps. Di Resta also led the Bahrain Grand Prix in the meantime. It was the first lead laps in Formula 1 for both drivers.
2013
During the first test drives, only di Resta was active as a driver for the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship . It wasn't until the end of February that the team announced the return of Sutil.
After both drivers finished in the top 10 in the first race in Australia , Force India took the vehicles out of the race in the second race in Malaysia due to problems with the wheel nuts for safety reasons. In Bahrain , di Resta led the race for a while and was in the top three for a long time. He finished in fourth place.
2014
After a year at Sauber, Nico Hülkenberg returned to Force India for the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship , his teammate became Sergio Pérez , who had been dismissed from McLaren . Pérez achieved the team's second podium with third place at the Bahrain Grand Prix . With 155 points, the team defended sixth place in the constructors' championship.
After teams Caterham and Marussia had to file for bankruptcy during the current season, there were also reports of payment problems at Force India. Outstanding payments to engine supplier Mercedes , which were not paid until the end of October 2014, ensured that Hülkenberg and Pérez did not have their fifth drive unit available until the US Grand Prix . There was speculation in the media that they could boycott the race in the USA together with Lotus and Sauber in order to draw attention to the poor financial situation of the small teams.
2015
The driver duo for the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship remained unchanged.
The team suffered from economic difficulties in the winter months before the start of the season, which delayed development of the 2015 car. Force India initially stated that it would do the first test drives before the season with the previous year's car in order to be able to carry out further development work on the new vehicle. On January 28, 2015, the team completely canceled participation in the test drives. The official reason was that test drives with last year's car could only provide limited knowledge. However, media reported that the team had unpaid invoices from suppliers and was insolvent. Force India is also behind in paying the rental fees for Toyota's wind tunnel. In the second week of testing before the season in Barcelona , the team took part with last year's car. Later it became known that participation could only take place because Mercedes supported the team financially. In return, Mercedes test driver Pascal Wehrlein was allowed to drive the Force India on two of the four test days. The new Force India VJM08 only appeared in the third week of testing in Barcelona, which took place 14 days before the start of the season .
From a technical point of view, the VJM08 was a further development of the previous year's model. The responsible designer was Andrew Green. In particular, the rear suspension of the vehicle and the hydromechanical suspension were newly developed. The team obtained the transmission and hydraulics from McLaren . Force India used the Toyota Motorsport wind tunnel in Cologne for aerodynamics .
Force India started the 2015 season with a budget of less than € 100 million; it was less than half of Williams' budget and was largely made up of so-called TV money. Sponsors, on the other hand, only contributed a small part of the budget.
At the opening race in Australia , both pilots crossed the finish line with the hardly tested VJM08: Hülkenberg finished seventh, Pérez tenth. In the following races, the car repeatedly showed aerodynamic deficits that had an impact on the performance of the car. They weren't fixed until the B version of the VJM08 that appeared at the British Grand Prix . Outwardly, it differed from the previous model in that it had double ventilation openings in the vehicle nose. With the B version, the athletic results improved. Since then, Force India has finished in the points in almost every race with at least one car. In the second half of the season, the team scored 97 world championship points. The team's best result was Pérez 'third place in the Russian Grand Prix .
During the season, Force India scored fewer points overall than last year, but nevertheless finished fifth, the best result in the team's history.
2016
In the season 2016 Force India continued its technical cooperation with Mercedes. Before the start of the season there were talks with the British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin about a business cooperation. This included the consideration that Aston Martin should act as a name sponsor. At the end of December 2015, however, Aston Martin decided not to become involved in Formula 1. The team competed again in 2016 with the driver pairing Hülkenberg and Pérez. The emergency vehicle was the Force India VJM09 . Force India achieved the best result in team history this season with fourth place in the constructors' championship. The racing team overtook the traditional Williams team, which competed with the same engine. The best results were Pérez's two third places in Monaco and Azerbaijan .
In 2016, the owner Vijay Mallya ran into problems. After fraud allegations were made against him some time ago, India invalidated his passport in April 2016 and issued an international arrest warrant. Mallya has since resided permanently in Great Britain and never left the country. However, this had no effect on the operation of the racing team.
2017
In the 2017 season , Force India competed with the VJM10 , which, as in previous years, is powered by a hybrid engine from Mercedes. The pink paintwork of the cars was new, and was due to the newly signed sponsor BWT . Sergio Pérez stayed with the team, while Hülkenberg ended his contract with Force India, which ran until the end of the 2017 season, prematurely in November 2016 and moved to Renault. In Hülkenberg's place, Esteban Ocon drove the second Force India chassis.
In April 2017, Vijay Mallya was temporarily arrested in the UK. These personalities did not affect the team's racing operations. In the first third of the season, Force India was the strongest Mercedes customer team. However, problems between the drivers prevented successful positioning among each other. In Canada, Pérez disregarded an instruction from the team to let the faster Ocon overtake him, but behind him, which, according to observers, missed a podium place. At the following race in Azerbaijan , due to the special circumstances of the race, a double victory for Force India was at times possible, but after a restart there was a collision between the two Force India pilots, as a result of which Pérez was eliminated and Ocon dropped to sixth place.
At the end of the season, Force India finished fourth in the constructors' championship with 187 points, as in the previous year, making it the best customer team. Williams, the direct competitor, is fifth with 87 points.
2018
For the 2018 season , Force India competed again with the driver pairing Pérez and Ocon. The test drives already showed that the VJM11 had problems. Force India could hardly score in the first three races of the season, Ocon only got one point in Bahrain . Force India brought major updates to the fourth race of the season in Baku . Sergio Perez was able to take third place through a chaos race and a late overtaking maneuver against Sebastian Vettel . In Monaco , Esteban Ocon finished sixth.
Force India filed for bankruptcy on July 27, 2018 . A few days later, a group of investors led by Lawrence Stroll took over material, personnel and liabilities. From the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix , Force India was eliminated from the Formula 1 World Championship, with the newly founded Racing Point Force India team taking over .
