report

backgrounds

After the British Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Lewis Hamilton and with 62 points ahead of Kimi Raikkonen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 131 points and Red Bull with 137 points .

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The track has been re-paved since the race last year, so significantly faster lap times were expected on the race weekend than in previous years. In addition, the curbs in curve four , curve six , curve seven and curve eleven were renewed so that they could now be driven over without any problems. The race management used induction loops that were installed 1.60 meters next to the track to check that the vehicles did not leave the track completely at these points. It was the first time this was electronically monitored at a Grand Prix.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. Zone one was on the start-finish straight and began 130 meters after the finish curve, the measuring point was five meters before the start of the finish curve. The second DRS zone was on the back straight after curve one ; there was no separate measuring point for this zone. So it could happen that after an overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the pilot in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.

Daniil Kwjat (seven), Max Verstappen (six), Räikkönen (five), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Rio Haryanto , Nico Hülkenberg , Felipe Nasr , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Fernando Alonso , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Jolyon Palmer , Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (four times), Jenson Button (twice), Alonso, Räikkönen, Daniel Ricciardo and Vettel (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Gerd Ennser (DEU), Lajos Herczeg (HUN), Alan Jones (AUS) and Baham Lekhal (MRT), who is the race steward for the first time at a Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 21.347 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. The training began after rain at night in wet conditions, but the track dried up after a few minutes.

In the second free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 20.435 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Vettel. Rosberg drove more than 1.5 seconds faster than Hamilton's qualifying best last year. The training had to be interrupted after an accident by Hamilton, who hit the lane with his vehicle.

In the third free practice session, Rosberg was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.261 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. The training was initially postponed after heavy rain. The training had to be interrupted four times: First, heavy rain fell again, followed by accidents involving Ericsson, Massa and Haryanto, after whose accident the segment was not restarted. Rosberg was the fastest. Since the racetrack dried up badly at the end of the segment and the lap times were getting faster and faster until the Haryanto accident, half of the drivers did not qualify for the Grand Prix. The Manor drivers, Ericsson, the Renault drivers and Felipe Massa were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. All pilots started on intermediates, but switched to the supersoft mix shortly before the end of the section . Verstappen was fastest. Nasr, the Haas pilots, Raikkonen, Pérez and Kwjat were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 19.965 minutes, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. It was the 26th pole position for Rosberg. After qualifying, the race stewards carried out an investigation, as Rosberg had set the fastest time under a double-waved yellow flag. Although the rule states that the driver must slow down significantly and be ready to stop, the stewards did not issue a penalty. Telemetry data showed that Rosberg had taken off the gas 30 meters earlier than on his previous lap and thus lost 0.1 seconds.

Although eleven drivers did not qualify, all drivers were allowed to start the race. Ericsson had to start from the pit lane because the monocoque of his Sauber had to be changed. Haryanto received a starting place penalty of five places because its gearbox was changed prematurely.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Ricciardo. It was the 48th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Alonso, Sainz, Bottas and Hülkenberg.

In the overall standings, Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg on one point, Ricciardo was now third. When it came to constructors, Mercedes increased its lead over Ferrari, and Red Bull was now just one point behind Ferrari.
