Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro , nicknamed Carlos Sainz junior , (born September 1, 1994 in Madrid ) is a Spanish automobile racing driver . He is the son of two-time Rally - World Champion Carlos Sainz . He started in the Formula Renault 3.5 in 2013 and 2014 and won the championship in 2014. He has been competing in Formula 1 since 2015 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (2005–2009)

Sainz began his motorsport career in karting in 2005, where he was active until 2009. Among other things, he was runner-up in the Spanish championship and champion in the Asia-Pacific KF3 championship in 2008. In 2009 he was runner-up in the European and Spanish KF3 championships and champion of the Monegasque KF3 Kart Cup.

Beginnings in formula racing (2010-2014)

2010 changed Sainz in Formula racing and went for Euro International in the European Formula BMW at. He was also accepted into the Red Bull funding program in early 2010 . Sainz won a race and finished fourth in the drivers' championship as the best newcomer. In addition, he took part in six races of the Pacific Formula BMW as a guest starter for EuroInternational and won two of them. He also made guest starts in the European F3 Open and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . After the season he took part in some races of the winter series of the British Formula Renault and finished 18th. 2011 Sainz started for Koiranen Bros. Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and in the Northern European Formula Renault . In the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup he was runner-up with two wins and 200 points behind Robin Frijns , who scored 245 points. In the Northern European Formula Renault, he won the championship title with ten wins in a duel with his teammate Daniil Kwjat with 489 to 441 points. In addition, he took part in the Macau Grand Prix and as a guest starter in a racing weekend in the Formula 3 Euro Series .

In 2012, Sainz competed for Carlin in the British Formula 3 Championship and the Formula 3 Euro Series . In addition, he was entitled to rank in the European Formula 3 championship , which included races in British Formula 3 and the Euro Series. Sainz won a race that belonged to the European Formula 3 and achieved fifth place in this classification. He prevailed here against his teammate William Buller , who was sixth. In the Formula 3 Euro Series, Sainz, with two second places as the best results, remained without a win and finished ninth overall. In the Euro Series, Sainz Buller was defeated and finished fifth. In British Formula 3, Sainz won five races and finished sixth in the drivers' standings, while his teammates Jack Harvey and Jazeman Jaafar had reached the top two positions.

In 2013 , Sainz switched to MW Arden in the GP3 series . With a second place as the best result, Sainz finished the season in tenth place in the drivers' standings, while his team-mate Kwjat won the championship. In 2013 it was also used at five Formula Renault 3.5 events for Zeta Corse . Two sixth places were his best placements. He was 19th overall. He also made two guest starts in the MSV F3 Cup , a British amateur racing series with older Formula 3 vehicles, and always finished in first place. In 2014 , Sainz completed the entire Formula Renault 3.5 season. He was given a cockpit at DAMS , the championship team of the previous season. On the first two race weekends in Monza and Alcañiz , he won one race each starting from pole position. At the fourth event in Spa-Francorchamps , he managed to win both races from pole position and also set the fastest race lap in one race. He won one more time at the Nürburgring and two more victories at Le Castellet . Sainz won the championship and prevailed with 229 to 192 points against Pierre Gasly , who, like Sainz, was promoted by Red Bull. Internally, Sainz clearly beat his teammate Norman Nato , who had scored 89 points.

Formula 1 (since 2015)

In 2015 , Sainz received a Formula 1 cockpit at Scuderia Toro Rosso . He chose 55 as his permanent starting number. He scored points for the first time in ninth place at the season opener in Australia . Sainz was involved in a serious accident during free practice for the Russian Grand Prix . He went off the track and hit the track barrier at high speed. Sainz was transported to the hospital as a precaution, but survived the accident unharmed and started the race the following day. He retired with a brake defect. Sainz's best result was a seventh place in the US Grand Prix . He finished the season with 18 points in 15th place in the drivers' championship. He lost to Max Verstappen , who scored 49 points in twelfth place.

In 2016 , Sainz stayed with Toro Rosso. His team-mate Verstappen was replaced by Kwjat after four races. Sainz achieved sixth place three times as the best results. He finished the season with 46 points in twelfth place in the drivers' championship.

In 2017 , Sainz and Kwjat initially formed the Toro Rosso driver duo again. At the Singapore Grand Prix , Sainz achieved his best result of the season to date with fourth place. For the US Grand Prix , Sainz switched to Renault . With seventh place, he immediately managed to place points. He finished the season with 54 points in ninth place in the drivers' standings.

In 2018 , Sainz continued to compete for Renault. At the end of the season he had 53 points, which meant tenth place in the drivers' standings.

In 2019 , Sainz moved to McLaren . At the Brazilian Grand Prix he initially crossed the finish line in fourth place. Since Lewis Hamilton , who was placed before him, was subsequently given a time penalty, Sainz moved up to third place and thus achieved his first podium finish. At the end of the season he finished sixth in the drivers' championship with 96 points, which is his best result in Formula 1.

In May 2020 it was announced that Sainz will be competing for Ferrari in the 2021 and 2022 seasons , where he will succeed Sebastian Vettel . He received a two-year contract. After the seventh race, he is currently in eleventh place with 23 points in the drivers' standings.
