The 2020 Austrian Grand Prix (officially: Formula 1 Rolex 2020 Austrian Grand Prix ) took place on July 5th at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg and was the first race of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship .
report
backgrounds
The Austrian Grand Prix was originally planned to be the eleventh of 22 races of the season. After the original season opener in Australia was canceled at short notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic , many other Grands Prix were subsequently canceled or postponed. When a new racing calendar was announced on June 2, 2020, the Austrian Grand Prix was the first race that was not canceled or postponed.
The Austrian Grand Prix thus represented the latest season opener in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship or the Automobile World Championship. The latest season opener up to that point took place in 1951 , when the Swiss Grand Prix was held on May 27th .
As the organizers expected restrictions due to entry restrictions in other countries, the Grand Prix of Styria was added to the racing calendar as the second race of the season . This race took place one week after the Austrian Grand Prix, and the venue was also the Red Bull Ring. For the first time in the history of the racing series, two races were held on the same race track within one season.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Austrian Grand Prix took place under strict safety and hygiene rules. No spectators were allowed, and every person who was in the paddock had to be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least every five days .
At the Austrian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available. For logistical reasons, Pirelli provided all drivers with the same number of tire sets in the respective degrees of hardness; it was not possible to place different orders. Each driver thus received eight sets of the soft , three sets of the medium and two sets of the hard mix.
Nicholas Latifi ( Williams ) made his Formula 1 World Championship debut at this Grand Prix. Esteban Ocon returned to the championship as a regular driver and contested his first race for Renault .
With Max Verstappen (twice), Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas (once each) three former winners took part in this Grand Prix.
Race commissioners were Gerd Ennser (DEU), Felix Holter (DEU), Walter Jobst (AUT) and Vitantonio Liuzzi (ITA).
free training
In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 04.816 minutes, ahead of Bottas and Verstappen.
In the second free practice session, Hamilton also set the fastest lap time in 1: 04.304 minutes ahead of Bottas and Sergio Pérez .
After the second free practice session, Red Bull Racing officially protested against Mercedes because Bottas and Hamilton had used dual-axis steering during practice . The protest referred to the fact that it was a moving aerodynamic part, which is prohibited by the regulations. In addition, it is a part of the wheel suspension that, according to the regulations, cannot be changed while driving. The protest was dismissed, the stewards viewed the dual-axis steering both physically and functionally as a permissible part of the steering . Although it is not a conventional steering system, it cannot be considered part of the wheel suspension.
In the third free practice session, Hamilton was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 04.129 minutes ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. The training was interrupted for a few minutes after an accident by Latifi.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Verstappen was fastest. The Williams and Alfa Romeo pilots and Kevin Magnussen were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, everyone else had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Verstappen achieved his fastest lap time on the medium mixture, the other pilots on the soft mixture. Bottas was the fastest. Romain Grosjean , Ocon, the AlphaTauri pilots and Sebastian Vettel were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Bottas set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 02.939 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. It was the twelfth pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever on this circuit.
Hamilton was moved back three starting positions for disregarding yellow flags.
run
Bottas won the race ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris . It was the eighth victory for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship. Norris achieved his first podium finish. The remaining points were placed by Hamilton, Carlos Sainz jr. , Pérez, Pierre Gasly , Ocon, Antonio Giovinazzi and Vettel. Since Norris set the fastest race lap and finished the race in the top ten, he received an additional point.
