background

Lorenzo Bandini's only win
Jochen Rindt's debut race
Graham Hill's only pole position of the season

After two sports car races, three Formula 2 races and one Formula 1 race that was not part of the Automobile World Championship , the Austrian Grand Prix was held for the first time in 1964 as part of the Automobile World Championship. A temporary course on the Hinterstoisser military airport near Zeltweg served as a racing track. It was the only time that the Grand Prix was held on this circuit because it was too narrow and uneven. In addition, the audience complained about the lack of grandstands. The Austrian Grand Prix did not take place again until 1970 , when a new track, the Österreichring , was built.

The factory teams used the Grand Prix to test new parts on their cars. Lotus had registered two Lotus 33s for Jim Clark and Mike Spence , Clark drove with a newly developed drive shaft. BRM tested new wider tires and Brabham had Jack Brabham's car modified tanks and changes in engine cover. Ferrari reported the Ferrari 158 for John Surtees , Lorenzo Bandini drove the older Ferrari 156 again . There was also this dichotomy at Cooper . Bruce McLaren drove the new Cooper T73 , Phil Hill the older Cooper T66 .

Jochen Rindt made his debut in the Automobile World Championship at the Austrian Grand Prix . The future world champion from 1970 was registered alongside Joakim Bonnier for the Rob Walker Racing Team and drove a Brabham for the only time in his career. This was also his only race of the season; In 1965 he moved to Cooper. Rindt became the first Austrian driver in the automobile world championship. Tony Maggs contested his last race of the season for Scuderia Centro Sud , he moved to Reg Parnell Racing the following season . Honda , Maurice Trintignant and Peter Revson paused for a race.

Between the Grand Prix of Germany and the Grand Prix of Austria, the Gran Premio del Mediterraneo , which is not part of the Automobile World Championship, took place. Joseph Siffert won this race in a Brabham - BRM. In the drivers' standings, Graham Hill was leading just ahead of Jim Clark and by a greater margin ahead of Surtees. In the constructors' championship, Lotus was one point ahead of BRM. Before the race, all drivers and constructors had a chance of winning the respective titles.

training

The first two-hour training session took place on the Friday before the race to determine the starting grid. Phil Hill had an accident at the beginning of the training and hit the hay bales several times, which served as a barrier. This damaged the suspension of his car. Clark and the Ferraris from Surtees and Bandini also had technical problems, caused by the uneven road surface. The fastest lap times in the first hour of practice were achieved by Surtees, Dan Gurney , Richie Ginther and Graham Hill. Other drivers went crazy or spun on the demanding route. When the electronic time measurement failed, the organizers used stopwatches as a replacement, but no longer guaranteed the correctness of the lap times.

The second training session took place on Saturday. When the drizzle set in, all vehicles took to the track. Everyone drove fast lap times, except for Clark, who completed a few slow laps because of a new gearbox. When the rain got heavier, all but the two Cooper drivers came to the pits to continue their training a few minutes later on the drying track. Graham Hill and Surtees improved their best times, while Clark and Gurney had to have their vehicles repaired again. Shortly before the end of the training session it started raining again, so that no driver could improve his time.

Graham Hill achieved pole position three tenths of a second ahead of Surtees. It was his only pole position of the season and BRM only started from first place at the Austrian Grand Prix in 1964. Clark was third ahead of Gurney, Ginther and Brabham. Bandini and Spence started behind. Best Cooper driver was McLaren in ninth place, best driver with customer vehicle Bonnier in tenth place. Rindt qualified 13th in midfield on his debut, Phil Hill finished last with the outdated Cooper. Originally, the organizers wanted to limit the starting field, but finally decided differently, so that all drivers qualified.

run

On Graham Hill's car, the wheels spun too much at the start and Clark was unable to shift into first gear, so he started with second. Both drivers lost many positions and dropped to eleventh and twelfth places. Gurney took the lead from Surtees, who overtook Gurney on the second lap. Both drivers then separated from the rest of the field. In midfield, Clark worked his way up again by overtaking Graham Hill, Phil Hill and Siffert one after the other. He then caught up with the chasing group with Ginther, McLaren, Bonnier and Ireland, who overtook each other several times. Clark overtook all four drivers within a short time.

Various technical problems arose on the vehicles early in the race. Brabham and Baghetti pitted for repairs in the first laps, Graham Hill gave up the race on lap five with an engine failure, and the race ended early for Amon due to an engine failure. When the suspension on Surtees' Ferrari broke on lap nine, Gurney took the lead again. Behind them, Clark had improved to third and when he overtook Bandini he was 13 seconds behind Gurney. McLaren took off in the group with Ginther, Bonnier and Ireland and was fourth. Spence overtook Siffert and was eighth. In the back field, Anderson, Hailwood and Phil Hill spun off the track, but were able to continue the race. On lap 23, Clark had reduced Gurney's lead to a few seconds so that the leader was already in sight of him. Gurney ran into Taylor, whom he wanted to lap; but the moment Taylor gave a hand signal that he was leaving, his suspension broke and he spun off the track. A few laps earlier, Siffert had retired with damaged brakes. He was uninjured when it hit the bale of straw. On lap 30, Clark was already in the slipstream of Gurney, but the gap increased again after the rear suspension of his Lotus began to break. He did a few more slow laps before giving up the race. Gurney then led by a large margin ahead of Bandini and McLaren. Behind them Ginther, Spence, Bonnier and Ireland fought for fourth place. Gurney slowed down, but had problems with the front suspension after three laps. He drove even more slowly, but had to make a pit stop on lap 46 to have the damage assessed. Gurney drove out for one more lap, which then broke the suspension completely, ending the race for him too. The new leader was Bandini for the first time in his career. As McLaren had retired behind him with an engine failure and Spence's half-wave also broke, Ginther was in second place ahead of Bonnier and Ireland. Rindt resumed the race after a long repair of his brakes. Ireland also pitted for repairs, after which he continued the race at a greatly reduced speed. Surtees, who had already retired at the beginning, had meanwhile fetched spare parts and tools in the pits and ran back to his Ferrari for a makeshift repair. This succeeded and he drove the damaged vehicle back into the pits himself.

Halfway through the race, only eight cars were still roadworthy. Ginther was 15 seconds behind Bandini, but every time he went faster, Bandini reacted and kept the gap constant. Ireland continued to fall behind and was overtaken by Hailwood and Anderson. Rindt retired on lap 58 with a defective steering and Phil Hill had an accident on the same lap. He got out in time before the car caught fire. Hailwood then pitted to have his vehicle's suspension fixed. Anderson moved up to fourth place and when Bonnier had engine problems ahead of him, he took third place. Bonnier then fell behind Maggs and Ireland.

Bandini let Ginther get within six seconds in the final laps and drove controlled victory. This was his only victory in the World Automobile Championship, and for Ferrari it was the second victory in a row. Anderson finished third, three laps behind, and achieved his only podium finish in the Automobile World Championship. Further points went to Maggs, Ireland and Bonnier. For Maggs it was the last points of his career, for Ireland the first of the season. Baghetti, Hailwood and Brabham also crossed the finish line but were more than eight laps behind. Gurney drove the fastest race lap, this was his second and last fastest race lap of the season. The large number of failures was one reason why this racetrack was never driven again. Brabham testified after the race, for example, that the cars in the Automobile World Championship were not designed to withstand the stresses and strains of such an uneven track. In response to this, the Österreichring was built a few years later , also in Zeltweg.

In the drivers' standings, the first three positions remained unchanged due to the failures. Graham Hill continued to lead Clark and Surtees. All drivers with at least five points still had a theoretical chance of becoming world champions. In the constructors' championship, BRM took first place with two points ahead of Lotus and eight points ahead of Ferrari. Only the five works teams BRM, Lotus, Ferrari, Brabham and Cooper still had theoretical chances for the title.
