The Gran Premio del Mediterraneo (German: Grand Prix of the Mediterranean) was an automobile racing event that was held almost annually from 1962 to 1998 at the Autodromo di Pergusa in the Sicilian city of Enna . It was advertised for different racing series.

history

The Gran Premio del Mediterraneo was initially advertised for Formula 1 . From 1962 to 1965 it was held many times in this form; He did not count at this time but at the Formula 1 World Championship . From 1967 the race was part of the Formula 2 European Championship . In this series, it replaced the Gran Premio di Pergusa , which had been held in the same place as a Formula 2 race in recent years and had been advertised for Formula 3 cars since 1966. The Gran Premio del Mediterraneo remained part of the Formula 2 European Championship until it was discontinued at the end of 1984. After that, it was part of the International Formula 3000 Championship , the successor to Formula 2 , for 14 years. At the beginning of the 21st century, two more Formula 3000 races were held in Enna, called Gran Premio di Enna .
One of the special features of the Gran Premio del Mediterraneo, which is held in July or August of the respective year, is the often very high temperatures. They repeatedly led to individual racing drivers canceling their participation in the event for fear for their health.
