In the fatal accident of his driver colleague and friend Roger Williamson at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in Zandvoort on July 29, 1973, he saw the burning vehicle wreck and, according to his own account, was able to see through the flames how Williamson was trying to free himself. Purley then immediately stopped to help - while some marshals had to stand by because they were not wearing fireproof clothing. Williamson could not be saved and burned in front of millions of television viewers in his car. David Purley received a lot of recognition for his efforts and received the British George Medal for the rescue attempt .

Purley's foray into Formula 1 was initially quite short-term, instead he became involved in Formula 2, where he started with chevrons and marches for the racing team of Hong Kong millionaire Bob Harper. He also started in Formula 5000 and won the British Championship here in 1976. In 1977 he returned to Formula 1 and drove an LEC. In qualifying for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1977, Purley survived a serious accident when his engine got stuck in full throttle and his car hit the guardrails so hard that Purley's body was subjected to an acceleration of about 180 g . After recovering from multiple fractures, he drove a few Formula 1 races in Great Britain that were not part of the World Championship. The Grand Prix career ended in 1977.

July 2, 1985 Purley died in a plane crash when he with a Pitts Special - biplane crashed into the sea in front of his hometown Bognor Regis.
