The 1977 Swedish Grand Prix took place on June 19 at the Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp and was the eighth race of the 1977 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
Two weeks after compatriot Gunnar Nilsson's maiden victory at the Belgian Grand Prix , numerous Swedish motorsport fans were eagerly awaiting the eighth round of the season.
The fact that the new Shadow regular driver Riccardo Patrese took part in a Formula 2 race in Mugello this weekend was used by Jackie Oliver , who is now team boss, for a short comeback as a Formula 1 driver. His last Grand Prix participation at the US Grand Prix in 1973 was more than three and a half years ago.
RAM Racing announced a second vehicle for the Finnish Formula 1 newcomer Mikko Kozarowitzky .
training
The tire manufacturer Goodyear , which with a few exceptions had been the sole supplier of Formula 1 since 1975, was working flat out to develop new tire compounds in order to maintain a competitive advantage over its competitor Michelin , whose entry into Grand Prix racing was imminent. Some of these new types of tires could be tested during the training sessions, but did not cause any significant differences in performance.
Just like two weeks earlier in Belgium, the front row consisted of the Lotus 78 driven by Mario Andretti and John Watson on Brabham . Behind them, James Hunt in the McLaren M26 and Jody Scheckter, who is still leading in the world championship, qualified . His title competitor Niki Lauda , who had meanwhile caught up to one point in the World Cup table, only reached 15th place on the grid.
The 24 fastest of the 31 pilots who had arrived qualified for the race.
run
Again Watson got off to a better start than Andretti, which briefly brought him the lead. In the second lap, however, Andretti took the lead and defended it until the third to last lap.
On lap 30, an attempt by Scheckter to overtake Watson led to a collision, whereupon Scheckter was out and Watson had to head to the pit to have repairs carried out. This put James Hunt in second place ahead of Patrick Depailler , Jochen Mass , Jacques Laffite and Carlos Reutemann . Within the next five laps, Laffite overtook the three drivers in front of him and then steadily reduced Andretti's lead. Meanwhile, Mass got past Depailler into third place, followed by Reutemann.
As Niki Lauda gave up the race on the 48th lap due to handling problems, the two leaders in the World Championship remained without points this weekend.
With three laps to go, Andretti had to go to the pits due to problems with the fuel supply. The stop threw him back to sixth place. Laffite took over the lead and won a Grand Prix for the first time. It was the first victory of a French driver in a French racing car with a French engine and a French main sponsor.
None of the three local pilots reached the goal. Conny Andersson had already failed to qualify with the defeated BRM P207 , Ronnie Peterson was the first driver of the day to give up prematurely on the eighth race lap due to a technical defect and Gunnar Nilsson was unable to finish the race due to a damage to the suspension, but finished 19th and thus the last one to be counted, since his failure only occurred in the 65th lap.
