The 1977 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 22nd and was the sixth race of the 1977 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
Renzo Zorzi had to leave the Shadow team due to disputes regarding his sponsors and was replaced by his compatriot Riccardo Patrese , who thus made his Formula 1 debut.
Niki Lauda , who had not been able to compete in the Spanish Grand Prix two weeks earlier due to a rib injury , was ready for action again.
The BRM team decided not to participate in the race weekend, as did some of the numerous private teams that were present at the Spanish GP. Presumably, the limitation of the starting field to 20 participants and the consequent low probability of a successful qualification were decisive for this decision.
At McLaren , due to an unsuccessful deployment in Spain, the decision was made again against the more modern M26 and both factory drivers were allowed to compete again with the M23 , which had been further developed but was four years old in terms of its basic design .
training
John Watson was the only one to complete a training lap in less than 1:30 min with the Brabham BT45B, which was significantly improved as a result of extensive test drives . This meant the first pole position of his career for him. It was the first time since the 1975 South African Grand Prix that a vehicle from the Brabham team was on the best grid position.
Wolf driver Jody Scheckter took second place ahead of Carlos Reutemann in the Ferrari , Tyrrell driver Ronnie Peterson and Hans-Joachim Stuck in the second factory Brabham, with which he set the fastest time on Friday.
After Clay Regazzoni had problems with the Ensign N177 during the first day of training , he left for Indianapolis at short notice to take part in qualifying for the Indy 500 . Jacky Ickx then took over his car, qualified for 17th place on the grid and took part in the race. It was his only Grand Prix participation that season.
Neither the two March factory drivers Alex Ribeiro and Ian Scheckter , nor Boy Hayje and Arturo Merzario , who each drove a privately entered March 761 , could qualify for the race.
run
After a very good start, Jody Scheckter took the lead from Watson, Reutemann, Stuck and Peterson and defended this position right through to the finish.
Due to a differential damage on lap 45, Watson had to give up second place to Lauda, who had worked his way up during the first half of the race. By the time he crossed the finish line, he came within a few meters of the leading Scheckter.
After an uneventful race, Carlos Reutemann took third place ahead of Jochen Mass , Mario Andretti and Alan Jones .
Registration list
1 From the third practice session on Saturday, Jacky Ickx took over the Ensign N177 with starting number 22 from Clay Regazzoni.
