Johann "Hans" Binder (born June 12, 1948 in Zell am Ziller ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and former racing car driver . He is the uncle of René Binder .
Career in motorsport
Franz Binder (1924–2013), Hans Binder's father, founded a timber trading company in Fügen in 1950 , today Binderholz GmbH , and also ran racing. He drove national rallies and was able to achieve the Austrian national championship title in 1961 with a DKW .
In 1972, at the age of 24, Hans Binder completed a driver training course at the Jim Russell racing school at the Österreichring near Zeltweg, was the best on the course and immediately won his first Formula Ford race at the Salzburgring . A full season in Formula Ford followed. He won the Austrian championship in this class and came second in the European championship. In 1974, the promotion to the next higher class - Formula 3 - came with a March . He was able to clinch a victory at the Nürburgring , plus there were strong driving performances and good placings in the European Championship . He finished second in Hockenheim , Kassel and on the Jyllandsringen .
Formula 2 followed in 1975 . A March BMW was acquired and Helmut Marko became team manager. Binder drove against Jean-Pierre Jabouille , Jacques Laffite and Vittorio Brambilla , among others . He finished second in the European Championship run on the Salzburgring, finished fourth in Zolder and fifth in Magny-Cours . In the end he reached 13th place in the European Formula 2 Championship .
Binder also stayed in Formula 2 in 1976 , this time with a Chevron BMW, but again with Marko as team boss. He finished fourth in Estoril and Nogaro and fifth in Enna , before the door to Formula 1 opened for Binder - before the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix . At the race in Germany two weeks earlier, Niki Lauda had a serious accident at the Nürburgring. Lauda was missing from the home race. At the same time, Chris Amon , who drove for the British Ensign racing team, had become tired of racing after many setbacks and decided not to start in Zeltweg. Therefore, and with some sponsorship money, Binder was able to start. At his first Grand Prix, with the Ensign-N176 - Ford - Cosworth , he started the race from 19th place on the grid, but retired on the 47th lap with a defective accelerator pedal. At the end of the year he started again, this time in a Wolf-Williams FW05 from the British racing team Walter Wolf Racing , where he stepped in for the initially planned Masami Kuwashima , whose sponsors had withdrawn shortly before the race. Binder started the race from 25th place on the grid. On the 49th lap, a wheel bearing on the Williams FW05-Ford-Cosworth went on strike, so that Binder failed again.
In 1977 Hans Binder signed a work contract with Surtees . With the Surtees TS19 he started six times in a row up to the Monaco Grand Prix . The best place was ninth at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jarama . After a short guest appearance with the German ATS team , with starts in Zeltweg and Zandvoort with the Penske-PC4 -Ford-Cosworth, Hans Binder drove the season for Surtees to an end without countable success. Surtees and Binder had different views on sponsorship payments and later even went to court.
John Surtees , the team owner and Formula 1 world champion from 1964 , about Hans Binder: “ Hans was better than his results. He would have had the ability to make more of his career - but he probably didn't want that at any cost. He liked the scene, liked the idea of being a Formula 1 driver. But what he lacked was cold ambition. “Surtees did not renew the contract with Hans Binder.
Hans Binder no longer drove a car race. In 1978 he had another opportunity to qualify for a race. ATS gave him a car for the home race at the Österreichring . His car, the HS1 , was too slow - Binder didn't qualify.
In 2014 he drove the Wolf-Williams FW05 again, with which he had already participated in the Japanese Grand Prix in 1976, for the legends race in the opening program of the Austrian Grand Prix, which took place for the first time since 2003 . Together with other former Formula 1 drivers such as Niki Lauda , Patrick Friesacher and Dieter Quester , who also competed in their former cars, Binder completed a few laps around the course.
Entrepreneur
Together with his two brothers, he runs the company Binderholz GmbH with 1150 employees and an annual turnover of around 400 million euros.
