Dietrich "Dieter" Quester (born May 30, 1939 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian motorboat , motorcycle and automobile racing driver .
Career
Dieter Quester began motorboat racing in 1957, and in 1962 he won the European championship in the 500 cc racing boat class (outboard engine). From 1963 to 1965 he tried his hand at Norton , NSU and BMW in motorcycle racing, but without outstanding success.
In 1965 he switched to automobile racing. He became European Touring Car champion in the years 1968 and 1969 on BMW 2002 ti , 1977 on a BMW CSL 3.5 of Alpina and 1983 on BM 635 CSi in Schnitzer - factory team .
From 1968 he was a works driver for BMW and one of the early instructors for BMW driver training. In 1969 he was supposed to compete in a Formula 2 race at the Nürburgring for the first time , but after the fatal training accident of his racing colleague Gerhard Mitter , BMW withdrew from participation. This was followed by several Formula 2 victories for BMW, and he came third in the overall standings in 1971. Quester describes his victory in the Formula 2 race on October 11, 1970 in Hockenheim as one of his greatest achievements: towards the end of the last lap he was in the entrance curve to the Motodrom to the right of Clay Regazzoni , who pulled in and touched Quester's car. The BMW got on, got into the meadow and drove on, badly damaged, while Regazzoni's Tecno also stopped for a moment outside the track. Quester won the race over 35 laps in 1: 16: 34.4 hours and with an average of 186.17 km / h with 1.7 seconds ahead of Regazzoni.
Quester's only participation in Formula 1 races , the Austrian Grand Prix on August 18, 1974, for the Surtees team (on Surtees TS9 ) resulted in 9th place in the ranking from 25th position.
Further touring car and procar races followed in the 1970s and 1980s , including a class win at Le Mans and, from 1989, participation in the German Touring Car Championship .
From 1994 to 1999 Quester was active in the US racing series IMSA , ALMS and the US Sportscars Championship. In 2001 and 2002 he competed in a Porsche 911 GT3 -R in Daytona and Sebring and took part in the FIA GT championship. In 2006 and 2007 he won the BMW M3 (E46) and BMW Z4 M Coupe by Duller Motorsport respectively, the 24-hour race in Dubai and the 24-hour race at Silverstone . In the years that followed, up until his 75th birthday, Quester took part in competitions with historic vehicles.
