David Donohue (born January 5, 1967 in Morristown ) is an American racing driver and the son of Mark Donohue .

Career

In contrast to his father, David Donohue hardly competed in monopostor races, apart from five starts in the 1995 Indy Lights series . In 1992 he made his debut in NASCAR and for several years drove in the North American Touring Car Championship , where he became champion in 1997. He has been driving sports car races in the Grand American Road Racing Association's racing series since 2005 and is one of the fastest drivers there.

In Europe, Donohue was a works driver for ORECA at the end of the 1990s with the Chrysler Viper GTS-R in the FIA GT championship and at the Le Mans 24-hour race .

Donohue won the Daytona 24 Hours in 2009 , 40 years after his father won the endurance race as partner of Chuck Parsons on a Lola T70 . The victory of David Donohue, Antonio García , Darren Law and Buddy Rice went down as the closest finish in a 24-hour race in motor sport history. At the finish, Donohue, who drove a Riley Porsche, had 0.167 seconds ahead of another Daytona prototype, driven by Juan Pablo Montoya , among others . The finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1966 was probably even closer when the Ford team management deliberately caused a dead race for the two leading Ford GT40s . However, there was no electronic timekeeping at that time and the distance was determined later by the ACO .
