Bryan Herta (born May 23, 1970 in Warren , Michigan ) is an American racing driver .

Career

From 1994 to 2001 Herta drove in the Champ Car series, among others for team bosses such as Chip Ganassi , Bobby Rahal and Gerald Forsythe . In 1998 and 1999 he won the race in Laguna Seca . In both races he started from pole position. In 1996 he also led the race at Laguna Seca to the last lap, when Alessandro Zanardi spectacularly overtook him in the famous "corkscrew" chicane. When approaching the chicane, Zanardi sat down to the right of Herta, then avoided the dirt on the exit from the chicane and sat in front of Herta. This overtaking maneuver went down in Champ Car history as "The Pass".

In 2003 he took his first victory at Kansas Speedway in only his third IRL start after replacing the injured Dario Franchitti at Andretti Green Racing . The team kept it for the 2004 season and expanded the team to four vehicles. In 2005, Herta won his second IRL win at Michigan International Speedway , just barely beating teammate Dan Wheldon .

At the beginning of 2006 he drove in Laguna Seca and Monterrey for the USA team in the A1 Grand Prix series before returning to Andretti Green Racing at the beginning of the IRL season. In the 2007 season he drove in the American Le Mans Series for Andretti Green Racing in the LMP2 category.

Herta is currently using a vehicle in the Firestone Indy Lights with his own team, Bryan Herta Autosport . In 2010 the team made their first appearance at the Indianapolis 500. In 2011, Dan Wheldon achieved the first victory on this track.
