David Brabham (born September 5, 1965 in Wimbledon , England ) is an Australian racing car driver .
Family and successes
David Brabham is the youngest of three sons of three-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham and the only one of them who, like his father, competed in Formula 1 races. Jack and David Brabham are the only father-son team to ever drive a car that bears both names - the Brabham .
David Brabham is primarily known as a sports car champion. Between 1992 and 2012 he took part in the 24-hour race of Le Mans 18 times . His greatest success was the overall victory in 2009 together with Alexander Wurz and Marc Gené in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP . He achieved this victory 50 years after his father Jack won his first Formula 1 World Championship in 1959 and 16 years after the triumph of his brother Geoff , who also won for Peugeot on the Sarthe in 1993.
Career
He began his career in Formula Atlantic , a racing series that originated in the USA, but under whose configuration races are also driven in Australia and New Zealand . In 1988 he came to England and drove there in Formula Vauxhall , a junior series. A year later, he rose to the B series of the British Formula 3 Championship and won five times in nine starts. This was followed by promotion to the A series, where he fought hard battles with the future Toyota Formula 1 driver Allan McNish throughout the season . Most important success: victory in the international Formula 3 race in Macau .
In 1990 the move to a higher class was due. David Brabham had already signed a contract with Middlebridge Racing for Formula 3000 when the opportunity suddenly arose to get into Formula 1. Gregor Foitek left the Brabham team after just two races and David took his place. An unsatisfactory season followed: 14 entries, but only eight qualified. The best place was a 15th place in the French Grand Prix . After the end of the season, his contract was not renewed.
David Brabham switched to the sports car scene. In 1991 he drove for TWR Jaguar and won the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring with Derek Warwick . 1992 followed a year for Toyota with the debut at Le Mans . In 1994 came the comeback in Formula 1 with Simtek . The team was underfunded and lost Brabham's teammate Roland Ratzenberger in a fatal accident at the tragic weekend in Imola in 1994 . The year was a lost one; best placement was 10th place at the Spanish Grand Prix .
After 24 grand prizes, Formula 1 ended at the end of 1994. Successful years in sports cars followed: 1995 BTCC for BMW, 1996 Japanese GT championship with the McLaren F1 GTR - with a championship victory over Ralf Schumacher . David Brabham has been active in the American Le Mans Series since 1997 . He drove there for the works teams of Panoz and Aston Martin, among others . Brabham has been driving Acura's two Le Mans prototypes since 2007 and was runner-up in the LMP2 category on an Acura ARX-01b in 2008 .
In 2009 David Brabham celebrated the greatest success of his career. As a partner of Alexander Wurz and Marc Gené, he won the Le Mans 24-hour race for the first time in a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP.
