Sebring 12 hour race 2014
The 62nd Sebring 12 Hours of Sebring , also known as the 62nd Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring fueled by Fresh from Florida , took place on March 15, 2014 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the second race of the 2014 United SportsCar Championship .
Before the race
After the American Le Mans Series ended , there was a new racing series, the United SportsCar Championship . The series emerged from the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series and thus formed the highest American sports car series. Both previous series were created after the end of the IMSA GT championship .
The race
The United SportsCar Championship combined the racing classes from the two previous series. Prototype Class (P): The former ALMS-LMP2 class and the Daytona Prototype class from the Rolex Sports Car Series were combined in this class. In addition, the DeltaWing , which was previously an LMP1 vehicle, competed in this class. Prototype Challenge (PC): This class was continued analogous to the current ALMS class of the same name. Gran Turismo Le Mans (GTLM): This class was continued in line with the current GT class of the ALMS. Gran Turismo Daytona (GTD): This class combined the former ALMS GTC class and the GT and GX classes of the Rolex Sports Car Series. The previous LMP1 class of the ALMS has been deleted without replacement.
The race was decided by a late caution phase , after half of the race distance had already been driven under yellow. The safety car had to go out on the track eleven times, a negative record in the history of the 12-hour race. In no other Sebring race was driving behind the safety car on a dry track as long as in 2014. After two serious accidents with PC vehicles, the race was even interrupted with the red flag . Eight vehicles with the winning car finished on the same lap. The overall winners were Scott Pruett , Memo Rojas and Marino Franchitti on a Riley MkXXVI , who had already made their last pit stop before the last caution and were never in the lead until this phase. Success was only possible because Ryan Dalziel and Sébastien Bourdais , who had been fighting for victory for hours, had to refuel under yellow and lost the victory.
