Barbosa began his career like so many racing drivers in karting . Almost thirteen years old, he won his first Portuguese championship. 1994 Barbosa was champion in the Formula 3 championship of his home country and a year later another title followed; this time he remained successful in the Italian Alfa Boxter Championship as the overall winner.
Barbosa is primarily known as a sports car driver. In 2004 he made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and competed every year until 2009. His best overall ranking so far was fourth in 2007. Barbosa competed for Rollcentre Racing; together with Martin Short and Stuart Hall he drove a Pescarolo 01-Judd. In addition to his activities in Le Mans, Barbosa is also active in American sports car racing. For Action Express Racing he drove in the Rolex Sports Car Series from 2010 to 2013 , and has been in the United SportsCar Championship since 2014 . In 2010 (with Mike Rockenfeller , Ryan Dalziel and Terry Borcheller ) and 2014 (with Christian Fittipaldi and Sebastien Bourdais ) he won the season highlight, the Daytona 24-hour race . In 2014 he was also able to win the title in the prototype class of the United SportsCar Championship and the special classification for endurance races, the North American Endurance Cup.
