Sébastien Bourdais (born February 28, 1979 in Le Mans ) is a French racing driver and the son of Patrick Bourdais .

He was French Formula 3 champion in 1999 and Formula 3000 champion in 2002 . Between 2003 and 2007 he was active in the North American Champ Car series, where he won four championships in a row and became the most successful driver in this series. For the 2008 season, Bourdais switched to Formula 1 , where he contested a total of 27 Grand Prix until mid-2009. He has been competing in the IndyCar Series since 2011 , before the 2017 season he moved to Dale Coyne Racing . In addition, Bourdais regularly takes part in endurance races.

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1991–2002)

Bourdais began his motorsport career in karting in 1991 . He won the Maine-Brittany Kart Championship in his very first year . In 1995 he moved into the single-seater racing and was ninth in the French Formula Renault Campus. In 1996 he switched to the French Formula Renault and finished seventh overall. He also won the Le Mans 24-hour kart race. The following year he won four races in French Formula Renault and was on the podium eleven times in eighteen races. He won the runner-up title behind his team-mate Jonathan Cochet . He also started in the European Formula Renault , in which he finished the season in tenth place overall. In 1998 he switched to the French Formula 3 championship . He achieved a podium finish and ended up being sixth overall and rookie of the year . A year later he won the French Formula 3 championship ahead of Cochet with three pole positions , four fastest laps and eight race wins. In the same year he took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race for the first time .

From 2000 he drove in the international Formula 3000 championship for the Prost Junior Team Gauloises Formula as a teammate of André Couto . He reached the pole position in Magny-Cours and finished second in this race. In the overall standings, Bourdais finished ninth at the end of the season and prevailed against Couto, who was 18th. He also took part again in the Le Mans 24-hour race. In his second year in Formula 3000, he drove for the DAMS team. He won the race at Silverstone , came on the podium in Budapest and Hockenheim and was on pole position in Spielberg . In the final, he finished fourth, while his teammate Derek Hill did not score points in any race. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring , he finished in the top 15. In 2002 he switched to Super Nova Racing and won the Formula 3000 championship with victories in Imola , Monaco and the Nürburgring as well as six pole positions. He was on the podium a total of eight times and set the fastest race lap three times. Bourdais benefited from the fact that his rival Tomáš Enge had been denied a victory because of a positive doping test. At the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps , he was involved in the victory of Team Labre . He also entered the Le Mans 24-hour race again. 2001 and 2002 Bourdais also took part in some races of the FIA Sports Car Championship .

Champ Cars (2003-2007)

Bourdais in the Champ Car, Long Beach 2005

After he had not received a regular cockpit despite several efforts in Formula 1 , Bourdais went to Newman / Haas Racing in the American Champ Car series in 2003 , where he became a teammate of Bruno Junqueira . He was on pole position in the first race in St. Petersburg , as well as in the second race in Monterrey . This was the first time since Nigel Mansell joined the Champ Cars in 1993 that a newcomer was in first position in the first two races. During the season he won Brands Hatch , the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and the floodlight race in Cleveland . At the end of the season he was named Rookie of the Year and had the best qualifying result of all participants. He finished fourth overall and had to admit defeat to Junqueira, who was runner-up, within the team.

In 2004 Bourdais stayed with Newman / Haas Racing. Although he won seven out of fourteen races, started eight times from pole position and stood on the podium ten times, he dueled Junqueira for the title until the last race. Bourdais prevailed against his teammates with 369 to 341 points and won the Champ Car Championship. In 2005 Bourdais defended the championship with six wins. With 348 to 288 points, he had a clear lead over runner-up Oriol Servià , who was his teammate from the third race weekend. Junqueira, who actually should form again with Bourdais Newman / Haas driver duo, was injured when the IndyCar Series counting Indianapolis 500 so hard that it turned out for the rest of the season. Bourdais also took part in the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and made his debut in the IndyCar Series. He also won a run in the International Race of Champions at Texas Motor Speedway and competed in individual sports car races.

The 2006 Champ Car season began for Bourdais with four wins from the first four races. In the further course of the season three more victories followed and he decided the championship title with 387 to 298 points against Justin Wilson again dominantly for himself. Within the team, he left Junqueira, who had returned to the cockpit, well behind. With his third Champ Car title in a row, Bourdais wrote American motorsport history, as only one driver ( Ted Horn , AAA National Champion 1946-1948) had previously succeeded. He also won the GT2 classification in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) once this season . In 2007 Bourdais got a new teammate in Graham Rahal . He won eight champ car races and won the championship title for the fourth time in a row. Bourdais became the first Champ Car driver to do so. Since the Champ Car series was held for the last time in 2007, Bourdais is also the last Champ Car champion. As in the previous year, he prevailed against Wilson, who was runner-up, with a clear lead. In 2007 Bourdais also took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP and finished second in the final classification together with Pedro Lamy and Stéphane Sarrazin .

Formula 1 (2008-2009)

Bourdais in Toro Rosso, Montréal 2008

During the Formula 1 winter test drives in December 2006, Bourdais got the opportunity to test for the Formula 1 team Toro Rosso . He repeated the tests over the course of the 2007 season and was eventually offered a contract for 2008 . There he competed alongside Sebastian Vettel for the Italian team. In his debut race, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne , he finished seventh despite an engine failure two laps before the end of the race after Rubens Barrichello was subsequently disqualified. During the course of the race, Bourdais had worked his way up to fourth place before the defect stopped him. In the further course of the season, however, Bourdais only managed to score further points in seventh at the Belgian Grand Prix . His performance was clearly dwarfed by his teammate. While Vettel finished eighth in the drivers' championship with one win and 35 points, Bourdais finished the season with four points in 17th place. Toro Rosso then initially let the option of a contract extension pass and explored other options.

In February 2009 , Toro Rosso finally extended Bourdai's contract for one season. After showing only two points after the ninth race and not being able to leave his younger teammate Sébastien Buemi behind, Toro Rosso ended his collaboration with Bourdais after the German Grand Prix . According to team boss Franz Tost , he “did not meet expectations”. Bourdais was replaced by the previous test driver Jaime Alguersuari . In the world championship, Bourdais was 19th this season. In parallel to his Formula 1 involvement, he competed again for Peugeot in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2009 and finished the race again in second place. That season he formed a team with Franck Montagny and Sarrazin. He also competed for Peugeot in a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

Superleague Formula (2009-2010)

After his dismissal from Toro Rosso, Bourdais switched to the Superleague Formula . For the Sevilla FC team , which was overseen by Ultimate Motorsport and Reid Motorsport , he took part in the three race weekends in the second half of the season. He won a race and was on the podium four times. He was also twice Weekend Winner . In 2010 Bourdais initially stayed in the Superleague Formula and switched to the Olympique Lyon team, which is managed by LRS Formula . Bourdais won a race on the first race weekend. No further podium placements followed, however, and he left the series after the fifth race weekend. He also took part in one race each of the ALMS and the Le Mans Series, as well as the 24-hour race in Le Mans. He won the race in the Le Mans Series in Spa-Francorchamps .

IndyCar Series (since 2011)

Bourdais in the IndyCar in Motegi, Japan, 2011

In 2011 Bourdais returned to North America and received a cockpit with Dale Coyne Racing in the IndyCar Series. He competed in all non-oval races. His season didn't start well. After failing to start in the first race after an accident in the warm up, he was eliminated twice in the next three races. In the second phase on the street circuits, Bourdais returned with five top 10 finishes from six races. In Toronto he showed a few overtaking maneuvers and finally finished in sixth place. A race later in Edmonton , Bourdais again achieved sixth place. In addition, he drove the fastest race lap. At the end of the season he was 23rd overall. Bourdais had only scored one point less than his teammate James Jakes , who had completed the entire season. In addition, Bourdais was active in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) in the Peugeot 908 and took part in six out of seven races in the LMP1 class. At the 24-hour race of Le Mans , which is part of the ILMC , he finished in second place for the third time. In Imola and Zhuhai Bourdais won the race together with Anthony Davidson and in Silverstone together with Simon Pagenaud . Together with Davidson, he was the pilot with the most wins. Bourdais also took part in two races of the V8 Supercar Championship Series and won one of them.

In 2012 , Bourdais was originally supposed to contest the entire IndyCar Series season for Dragon Racing . His teammate was Katherine Legge . Lotus, the team's engine supplier at the start of the season, lagged behind the other two engine manufacturers at the start of the season. At the second race in Birmingham , Bourdais finished ninth after a good race. It was Lotus' only top 10 finish. After the fourth race, Dragon switched to Chevrolet . However, since these did not have enough engines, Dragon reduced his team to one vehicle for the sixth race. Bourdais was selected as the pilot for the road courses, and Legge was given the cockpit for the remaining four oval races. At the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio , he achieved his best result of the season with a fourth place. He finished the season in 25th place. Bourdais also took part in two races of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship . He finished 86th in the drivers' championship. In addition, Bourdais contested three races for Starworks Motorsport in the North American Rolex Sports Car Series . He was on the podium at every race and won the Indianapolis race with Alex Popow . In the DP ranking he reached 17th place. In 2013 , Bourdais stayed with Dragon Racing in the IndyCar Series. After failing to make it into the top 10 in the first eleven races, he achieved a podium finish in both races in Toronto . In the first race he started from the front row for the first time in the IndyCar Series and finished second on the podium for the first time. In the second race he was third. In the last six races he was in the top 10 four times. At the Grand Prix of Baltimore , Bourdais achieved another podium finish starting from 22nd place with third place. He finished the season in twelfth place and with 370 to 236 points clearly prevailed against his teammate Sebastián Saavedra . In addition, he contested a total of seven long-distance races in the Rolex Sports Car Series for several teams.

In 2014 Bourdais competed in the IndyCar Series for KV Racing Technology , who used their vehicle under the name KVSH Racing . He received a two-year contract. In Toronto , Bourdais won the IndyCar Series for the first time. At the following racing event in Lexington , he finished in second place. Bourdais finished the season on the tenth championship course. Saavedra, who was again his teammate, left him well behind with 461 to 291 points. In 2014 he also competed in endurance sports again. He drove three races for Action Express Racing in the United SportsCar Championship (USCC), which emerged from the Rolex Sports Car Series and the ALMS, and won the Daytona 24-hour race together with Christian Fittipaldi and João Barbosa . In 2015 Bourdais contested his second season for KVSH Racing. He won the second race in Detroit and the race in West Allis . As in the previous year, he finished the season in tenth place overall. With 406 to 203 points, he clearly prevailed against his teammate Stefano Coletti . Bourdais also competed in the USCC for Action Express Racing again in 2015 . Together with Barbosa and Fittipaldi, he won the prototype class twice and was eleventh in this category. Bourdais also contested five races in the V8 Supercars .

In 2016 Bourdais stayed in the IndyCar Series with KVSH Racing. In Detroit , he decided a race for himself. He finished the season in 14th place overall.

Bourdais at the IndyCar race at Elkhart Lake 2018

In 2017 Bourdais switched to Dayle Coyne Racing within the IndyCar Series . He won the season opener in St. Petersburg . In qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 Bourdais had a serious accident. He broke his right hip and multiple pelvic fractures in the accident. About two months later, he was back in an IndyCar for a private test. He started in the last three races of the season. In 2018 he repeated his victory at the season opener in St. Petersburg. After the 2019 season , his contract with Dale Coyne was not renewed. In the IndyCar Series, he will drive a few selected races for AJ Foyt Enterprises in 2020 . As a full-time program, he drives a Cadillac DPi-VR for JDC Miller Motorsports in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship together with João Barbosa .
