The 2009 Australian Grand Prix took place on March 29th at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne and was the first race of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship . The winner was Jenson Button ( Brawn - Mercedes ) ahead of Rubens Barrichello (Brawn-Mercedes) and Jarno Trulli ( Toyota ).
Reports
background
The start of the season was the latest since the Formula 1 World Championship in 1988 .
The start time has been moved from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm AEDT . This was done in order to be able to offer the European viewers better airtime (6 a.m. UTC ).
Jarno Trulli contested his 200th Grand Prix at the Australian Grand Prix.
With Giancarlo Fisichella , Fernando Alonso , Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton (once each) four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
At the Australian Grand Prix, Sébastien Buemi and Brawn GP , the successor to Honda , made their debut.
training
Williams driver Nico Rosberg secured the first best time of the year ahead of his teammates Kazuki Nakajima and Kimi Räikkönen . In the second practice session, Rosberg was again the fastest driver in the field. Rubens Barrichello and Trulli followed in second and third place . In the third free practice too, Rosberg drove the fastest lap and thus achieved the best time in every training section. This time Trulli and Jenson Button took the places behind him.
qualification
In the first qualifying phase, the cars of the new Brawn team dominated. Barrichello set the fastest time ahead of Jenson Button. The Force India and Toro Rosso pilots and Nelson Piquet junior were eliminated. In the second qualifying stage, the two Brawns, led by Barrichello, were again at the top of the field. The McLaren drivers, Nakajima , Alonso and Heidfeld did not make the leap into the third section. This was again dominated by the two Brawn drivers, of whom Button secured pole position in 1: 26.202 minutes ahead of Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel .
run
The Brawn drivers also continued this performance in the race and celebrated a double victory - however, Barrichello's second place was favored by the failure of Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) and Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber). Third place went to Jarno Trulli (Toyota); a 25-second time penalty imposed after the end of the race for overtaking during a safety car phase shortly before the end of the race, which was no longer canceled, was later withdrawn. World champion Lewis Hamilton , who started from 18th place and initially inherited third place, was subsequently disqualified for deliberate deception. Sébastian Buemi, the first Swiss Grand Prix starter in Formula 1 since 1995, finished seventh in his debut race and scored two championship points. Nico Rosberg drove the fastest race lap in 1: 27.706 minutes.
With Jenson Button another driver won for the seventh time in a row.
Sebastian Vettel had collided with Robert Kubica three laps before the end of the race in second position, which meant that both were eliminated from the race. The race stewards came to the conclusion that Vettel was the cause of the accident, and imposed on him a ten-place position back for the next Grand Prix. Red Bull was also fined US $ 50,000 for not instructing its driver to park its badly damaged car after the accident with Kubica, thereby endangering others.
Only for the second time in Formula 1 history (apart from the first Formula 1 GP held in 1950) did a new team win the premiere race. This was the case for the first time at the 1977 Argentine Grand Prix , when Jody Scheckter won as the driver of the then new Walter Wolf Racing team . In both cases, however, it should be noted that the teams were previously represented in Formula 1 in a different constellation. In the case of Wolf, a collaboration with Frank Williams Racing Cars in the 1976 season preceded it. Brawn GP emerged from the Honda factory team.

1 Since the rear wings of the Toyota pilots Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli were classified as illegal, they were transferred to the end of the starting grid. However, Toyota decided to start from the pit lane .
2 Lewis Hamilton was dropped five grid positions from 15 to 20 due to a gearbox change. However, he moved up to 18th place due to the Toyotas' penalty transfer.
