The Australian Grand Prix 2017 (officially 2017 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix ) took place on 26 March at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne instead and was the first race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2017 .
report
backgrounds
At the Australian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . Since the order for the tires of each compound available to each driver had to be placed before the test drives before the season, the FIA determined in advance that each driver would be provided with seven sets of Ultrasoft , four sets of Supersoft and two sets of Soft .
There were several changes to the route compared to the previous year: Due to the significantly higher cornering speeds due to the new regulations, twice as many stacks of tires were placed in several corners, including the Jones and the Stewart . In addition, the tire stacks in turn twelve were replaced by TecPro barriers. The opening of the wall in the Lauda was closed, the hooks for fastening the curbs at the apex of curve eleven and curve twelve were concreted in.
The two DRS zones were in the same places as in the previous year; the first zone began on the start-finish straight exactly 762 meters before the first corner, the Jones . After the Brabham began the second zone, which was 510 meters long. There was only one measuring point for both DRS zones, at which the distance to the vehicle in front was determined; he was eight feet from the Stewart . In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.
Lance Stroll ( Williams ) made his Formula 1 debut at this Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas ( Mercedes ), Nico Hülkenberg ( Renault ), Kevin Magnussen ( Haas ), Esteban Ocon ( Force India ) and Pascal Wehrlein ( Sauber ) contested a race weekend for the first time your new team; Stoffel Vandoorne ( McLaren ) made his debut as a regular driver.
After the free practice sessions on Friday, Wehrlein announced that he would not be able to cover a complete race distance because of the back training he suffered from the back injury he suffered at the Race of Champions . Antonio Giovinazzi therefore contested the rest of the race weekend for Sauber; it was his first Grand Prix.
Daniil Kwjat (eight), Sebastian Vettel (six), Carlos Sainz jr. (five), Magnussen, Ocon, Jolyon Palmer , Wehrlein (four each), Sergio Pérez (three), Bottas, Marcus Ericsson , Hülkenberg, Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points .
With Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton (twice each), Fernando Alonso and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Race stewards were Steve Chopping (AUS), Dennis Dean (USA), Tim Mayer (USA) and Derek Warwick (GBR).
free training
Hamilton set the best time in the first free practice with a lap time of 1: 24.220 minutes ahead of Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo .
In the second free practice, Hamilton was again fastest in 1: 23.620 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. The training had to be interrupted due to an accident by Palmer.
In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 23.380 minutes ahead of Bottas and Hamilton. The training had to be stopped around ten minutes before the end after an accident by Stroll.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Palmer, Stroll, Vandoorne, Magnussen and Giovinazzi were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Bottas was the fastest. Ericsson, the Force India pilots, Alonso and Hulkenberg were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. The section had to be interrupted after an accident by Ricciardo, who therefore set no time. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 22.188 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was Hamilton's 62nd pole position and the fastest lap time ever on this track. Hamilton also achieved his sixth pole position at the Australian Grand Prix, setting Ayrton Senna's record .
Ricciardo and Stroll were moved five positions back due to a premature gear change.
run
Ricciardo got stuck on the way to the starting grid and his vehicle was brought into the pits for repairs. His starting place therefore remained empty.
At the end of the warm-up lap, Pérez moved into his starting position hesitantly, and a marshal accidentally pressed a button that indicated a problem with the starting grid. The first start was therefore canceled and there was then a second introductory lap. The second start was carried out regularly, Hamilton started well and stayed in the lead. Bottas started better than Vettel, Verstappen better than Raikkonen. Both Ferrari drivers defended their positions in the first corner. In the back of the field there was a collision between Ericsson and Magnussen in the White Ford . Both fell back to the end of the field, Magnussen also suffered a tire damage and pitted to change tires. Hamilton led ahead of Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Massa, Romain Grosjean , Sainz, Pérez and Kwjat.
At the end of the second lap, Ricciardo started the race with his repaired vehicle. Vettel put Hamilton under pressure, behind them Bottas and Räikkönen could not keep up with the pace and fell back several seconds. On the ninth lap, Vandoorne pitted with technical problems. After restarting the engine, he resumed the race one lap behind. Palmer went off the track several times and complained over the radio to his team about brake problems. Grosjean pitted his vehicle after giving his Haas a severe performance loss due to a water leak and gave up the race. Palmer also parked his car in the pit shortly afterwards.
On lap 17, Hamilton was the first driver to pit in the leading group and switched to soft . He came back on the track shortly behind the now fourth-placed Verstappen and very quickly narrowed the gap to Verstappen, but did not get past. On lap 23, Vettel also switched to soft and came out of the pit lane just before Verstappen. He blocked the attack from Verstappen and then quickly pulled away. Meanwhile, Bottas was leading in front of Raikkonen. Bottas and Verstappen changed tires on lap 25, followed by Raikkonen one lap later. Verstappen was the only one of the drivers to switch to Supersoft , the other drivers to Soft . So Vettel was now in front of Hamilton, Bottas, Raikkonen, Verstappen and Kwjat, who had not yet been to the pits.
Ricciardo parked his Red Bull on the 29th lap with no fuel pressure at the edge of the track, while Vettel increased his lead over Hamilton to almost ten seconds. Verstappen caught up with Raikkonen but didn't get that close to launch an attack. Kwjat was the last driver to pit for the first tire change, was let past by Sainz on a team order, then caught up with Pérez with his fresh tires and put him under pressure. Stroll came off the track with braking problems and shortly afterwards parked his car in the pits. On the 50th lap, Magnussen also parked his vehicle on the edge of the track with a broken wheel suspension.
Kvjat, who was in eighth place, had to pit because air from the pneumatics had escaped from his engine. This was filled up again, he changed the tires a second time, now again to Ultrasoft . He fell back to ninth place and shortly thereafter drove the fastest lap to date. Alonso, who was tenth at the time, reported a problem with the suspension by radio. He had to let Ocon and Hulkenberg pass and parked the vehicle in the pits one lap later. Räikkönen drove the fastest lap of the race on lap 56.
Vettel won the race ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. It was the 43rd victory for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship and the first since the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix . For Bottas it was the tenth podium finish in his career and the first since the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix . The remaining points were achieved by Raikkonen, Verstappen, Massa, Pérez, Sainz, Kwjat and Ocon. For Ocon it was the first point in the Formula 1 World Championship.
Hundreds of spectators stormed onto the track during the run-out lap, as the gates for access to the track were opened too early. As this is normally only allowed to happen when all vehicles have already completed the run-out lap, the FIA initiated an investigation against the race organizer.
The drivers 'standings were identical to the race results, with Ferrari leading in the constructors' standings from Mercedes and Red Bull Racing .
