The Renault RS17 was the Formula 1 - racing cars from Renault for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . It is the 22nd Formula 1 racing car from Renault. It was presented in London on February 21, 2017 and the presentation was broadcast live on YouTube .
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the RS17 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP.
The RS17 is the successor to the RS16 . As the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, most of the vehicle has been redeveloped. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.
With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, the rear wing , the width of which changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and the height of which changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, and also the diffuser , which now has a total height of 175 mm 125 mm and a width of 1050 mm increased by 50 mm. To improve the air flow to the rear wing, the car has a noticeable fin on the engine cover.
Is driven from the RS17 Renault RE17 , an in vehicle center -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine with a turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox with titanium housing has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
Unlike the previous model, the RS17 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch magnesium wheels from OZ Racing . This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the RS17. The brake discs are made of silicon carbide ceramic reinforced with carbon fibers .
Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the RS17 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS) that reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
On the sidelines of the first official test drives before the season, it became known that the team had been warned by the FIA , because the strut used on the RS17 between the engine cover and the rear wing was not mounted on the rear wing itself, but on the mechanics of the DRS and thus against the technical regulations violate. Therefore, the strut had to be rebuilt before the start of the season.
Painting and sponsorship
The front part up to the cockpit of the RS17 is painted in yellow, the rest of the car is painted in black.
In addition to the manufacturer Renault , Castrol , Genii Capital , Infiniti , Mapfre and Microsoft (for the cloud service Dynamics 365 ) advertise on the vehicle. From the US Grand Prix , sponsor stickers from Estrella Galicia were also available.
driver
Renault initially competed in the 2017 season with drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Jolyon Palmer . Hulkenberg moved from Force India to Renault before the season, replacing Kevin Magnussen , who moved to Haas . Palmer was playing his second season for the team. Palmer was won the Japanese Grand Prix by Carlos Sainz Jr. replaced, who had played the season up to then for Toro Rosso .
