The Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power + is the Formula 1 - racing cars from Mercedes for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . It is the ninth Formula 1 racing car from Mercedes. It was presented at Silverstone on February 23, 2017 .

For this vehicle, Mercedes is using the name of its new brand for electric mobility , EQ (as an abbreviation for Electric Intelligence ) for the first time as an addition to the previous vehicle name . All future plug-in hybrid vehicles from Mercedes-Benz are to be called EQ Power .

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the W08 EQ Power + is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a heat-resistant carbon fiber reinforced composite material.

The W08 EQ Power + is the successor model of the Mercedes F1 W07 Hybrid . Since the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, the vehicle is largely a new development. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.

With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, and the rear wing , whose width changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and whose height changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, as well as the diffuser , which now has a total height of 175 mm instead of 125 mm and a width of 1050 mm increased by 50 mm. At 3760 mm, the vehicle has the longest wheelbase of all Formula 1 cars of the 2017 season.

During the test drives before the season, the vehicle was partly on the road with a noticeable fin on the engine cover, and an additional wing was used several times on the engine cover to optimize the airflow to the rear wing. Mercedes was the only team to test a wing that looked like a double-decker . This wing was also present on the W08 EQ Power + at the season opener in Australia and was even supplemented by a third, smaller wing element.

Is driven the W08 EQ Power + by Mercedes-AMG F1 M08 EQ Power + , an in vehicle center -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Mercedes with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

Unlike the previous model, the W08 EQ Power + is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels from OZ Racing . This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the W08 EQ Power +.

Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the W08 EQ Power + has a Drag Reduction System (DRS) that reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

In the course of the Australian Grand Prix it became known that the vehicle weighs 733 kg and is therefore five kg above the minimum weight, which meant a time loss of around 0.2 seconds per lap on the Albert Park Circuit .

Painting and sponsorship

The W08 EQ Power + is painted predominantly in silver based on the Mercedes Silver Arrows , with additional cyan and black accents due to the main sponsor Petronas .

In addition to Daimler AG (with the Mercedes-AMG brand ) and Petronas, Epson , Hugo Boss , Pirelli, Qualcomm and Wihuri also advertise on the vehicle.

driver

Mercedes competed in the 2017 season with drivers Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton . Bottas moved from Williams to Mercedes, replacing Nico Rosberg , who retired after the preseason, and Hamilton played his fifth season for the team.
