The Mercedes-Benz 222 series is the tenth generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is located in the upper class or luxury class . The world premiere took place on May 15, 2013 in Hamburg. Production began on June 12th while the launch was scheduled for July 20th.

The 222 series sedan succeeds the 221 series . The Coupé ( C 217 ) replaced the CL from late summer 2014 and is marketed as the S-Class Coupé . In February 2015, the Mercedes-Maybach S 400 (China, Russia) , S 500 and S 600, an even longer version ( X 222 ), appeared. At the beginning of 2016, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman ( VV 222 ) was introduced, a Pullman limousine that was once again extended to 6.50 m.

The entry-level price of the 222 series was around 80,000 euros when it was launched.

Model history

General

The 222 series is based on the previous model, the 221 series , has the same floor pan and its type approval ( carry-over principle). From a formal point of view, the new model is therefore a variant of the 221 series . The adoption of type approval is also of legal importance, as the refrigerant R134a can still be used, which is not permitted for cars that received their type approval after 2011. In this way, the controversial but less climate-damaging refrigerant R1234yf could be avoided. At the time of the market launch, R1234yf refrigerant was the only technically possible alternative for new type approvals. As a result of the takeover of the floor pan, the wheelbases are identical to those of the previous model.

The developers emphasize that, in contrast to the previous generations, the long version ( V 222 ) of this model was the starting model for development, from which the normal version ( W 222 ) was derived. However, this can be refuted by various statements, for example by Bruno Sacco about the 140 series , in which only a version with a long wheelbase was planned from the beginning and a version with a short wheelbase was only created towards the end of development. In any case, the reason for the decision to focus on the long version again is the dwindling importance of luxury sedans in Europe due to lower sales figures. At the same time, the American and Chinese markets are growing, which at the beginning of the second decade of the 2000s actually became the most important of S-Class sales. In these markets, the long versions are primarily sold as chauffeur limousines, so that the focus of development was on the long version.

After production of the Maybach sedans, which were previously located above the S-Class , was discontinued, there is an extra- long variant in addition to the previous wheelbases (normal: W 222 , long: V 222 ), which is carried under the sub-brand Mercedes-Maybach . Internally, this model is called the X 222 .

development

In the tenth generation of the S-Class, noise, oscillations, vibrations and glare are said to have been greatly reduced. Odors and optimal air conditioning were also in the foreground of the development. So in which Series 222 , the perfume atomiser from the Maybach available. The controls in the vehicle were developed based on anthropometric aspects. The noise comfort is said to have been improved by an aerodynamic body design, the value is given as 0.24. The material quality and workmanship should now be based on the models from Bentley and Rolls-Royce .

Assistance systems

The 222 series contains a large number of newly developed driver assistance systems based on networked long-range, short-range and (multi-range) radars, stereo cameras , infrared video and ultrasonic sensors, all of which not only cover the front area, but also the rear and monitor the side areas of the vehicle. A wrong-way driver warning system , which was developed in cooperation with Continental AG , is available on request . With this system, a camera installed in the upper area of the windshield recognizes the corresponding signs in order to trigger warning signals in two stages if necessary. First of all, there are visual and acoustic warnings. If the journey is continued anyway, the belts are tightened briefly several times, the steering wheel begins to vibrate and the vehicle begins to brake itself briefly. The lane departure warning system has been further developed and now works actively, so that oncoming traffic and vehicles in the adjacent lane are recognized and the system prevents people from leaving the lane through unilateral braking. The third generation of the Pre-Safe security system has also been further developed and recognizes pedestrians. In order to avoid an accident, the so-called pre-safe brake brakes fully automatically up to a speed of 50 km / h. The system has also been expanded to include Pre-Safe Plus , which detects an impending rear-end collision so that subsequent accidents with the vehicle in front can be prevented, as the stationary vehicle is braked in the event of a collision. Also Distronic Plus has been developed and a steering assist expands so that the vehicle automatically complete traffic jam rides and keep the track and can correct if necessary.

Another world first in automotive engineering is the active seat belt buckle on the rear seats, which extends seven centimeters when the rear doors are opened. If a danger is detected, the seat belt buckles are also lowered by four centimeters and the belts are tightened to hold the passengers more firmly in place.

A so-called beltbag on the rear seats is intended to further reduce the risk of injury. It is a belt strap that can be inflated up to three times its width.

The S-Class is the world's first vehicle to run out of lightbulbs. They have been replaced by over 190 LEDs . By using LEDs instead of the previous incandescent lamps, power consumption is said to have been reduced by a quarter. The newly developed LED low beam requires 34 watts ( 120 watts for halogen bulbs and 84 watts for xenon light ).

landing gear

The AirMatic chassis available for all models is part of the basic equipment . From the S 500, the Magic Body Control active chassis is available for rear-wheel drive models at an additional cost.

Magic Body Control uses stereo cameras to detect unevenness in the road ahead ( road surface scan ) and adjusts the dampers. It is based on the Active Body Control chassis from the previous series. The measurement accuracy of the stereo camera is between one and two millimeters and covers five to 15 meters of the area in front of the vehicle. In this way, body movements are to be compensated for. The system works during the day when visibility is good and the road surface is dry (not when it is wet) and up to a speed of 130 km / h.

In terms of technology, the 222 series offers two LC screens with a diagonal of 12.3 inches each. While the left screen shows a digital speedometer, the information from the Comand system (with Intel Atom ) is shown on the right screen . The seats have been redesigned. On request, 14 air cushions per seat are available for six different massage programs or for heating up specific areas. Another new feature is the sound system from Burmester Audiosysteme , which was previously only available in high-priced vehicles from Porsche and Bugatti . By Daimler is propagated, using 24 speakers - including three in the vehicle roof - a 3D sound to have reached. The corresponding boxes are mounted directly under the sheet metal so that the cavities can be used as resonance bodies.

Facelift

In April 2017, a facelifted version of the S-Class was presented at Auto Shanghai . The most important innovation is a changed engine range, with in- line six-cylinder engines now available as entry-level models for diesel and gasoline vehicles . A plug-in hybrid version with an electric range of 50 km was also presented. General changes include improvements to driver assistance systems , new headlights and taillights, and a modified interior design. With the new ENERGIZING control, various comfort systems in the vehicle, such as massage seats, fragrances or air conditioning, are networked.

Engines

There was a choice of three engines for the market launch, including a gasoline engine, a gasoline engine with an electric motor (gasoline hybrid) and a diesel. The M 278 petrol engine in the S 500 is familiar from the previous model and has an output of 335 kW (455 hp) from a displacement of 4.7 l. The S 500 is the world's first production vehicle with a gasoline particulate filter (OPF). The petrol hybrid in the S 400 HYBRID is based on the 3.5-liter V6 from the M 276 series . The system output is given as 225 kW (306 PS). The S 350 BlueTEC diesel engine has been taken over from the 221 series . The output remains unchanged at 190 kW (258 hp). All models are initially linked to the 7G-TRONIC Plus 7-speed automatic transmission with automatic start-stop and are driven by the rear wheels.

In autumn 2013, the engine range was expanded to include the all-wheel-drive S 500 4MATIC and the S 63 AMG with 430 kW (585 hp), followed by the top 12-cylinder models S 600 L and S 65 AMG L at the end of March 2014 and the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID , which is based on the 150 kW 2.1 liter OM 651 diesel engine and has been combined with an electric motor with an output of 20 kW (27 hp). The total output is therefore 170 kW (231 PS). In addition, 4MATIC all - wheel drive has also been available for the S 350 BlueTEC since March 2014 .

Since September 2014, the S 500 e plug-in hybrid has been the first S-Class with a plug-in hybrid. In this model, the double-charged 3.0-liter V6 of the M 276 series with an output of 245 kW (333 hp) is powered by an electric motor in the form of a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 8.7 kWh and an output of 85 kW (116 PS) combined. The large battery reduces the luggage compartment volume from 530 l to 400 l. This drive has a purely electric range of 33 km. The combined consumption is stated as 2.8 liters per 100 km, the combined CO 2 emissions as 65 g / km. With the facelift, a further developed accumulator should be introduced in 2017, which should enable a purely electric range of more than 50 km. For the first time, inductive charging will also be available as an option for the S 500 e .

With the introduction of the Maybach equipment variant on the Chinese car market in February 2015, there was the S 400 4Matic as an entry-level petrol engine, whose engine, the 3.5-liter V6 with 245 kW (333 hp), was already used as a hybrid in the S 400 h , in the latter model it has an output of 225 kW (306 hp). The engine has also been available for the short and long S-Class since April 2015. This engine is also installed in the S 500 e L , but with a smaller displacement of 3.0 liters. The range of engines for the Mercedes-Maybach has been expanded to include an all-wheel drive version based on the S 500 ( S 500 4Matic ). After the GLE , this is the second Mercedes-Benz in which the 9G-TRONIC has been combined with all-wheel drive . For this purpose, BlueTEC was renamed d , PLUG-IN-HYBRID to e , HYBRID to h as part of the redesign of the vehicle and engine license plates at Mercedes-Benz.
