The Mercedes-Benz 205 series is the current series of the mid-range C-Class model from Mercedes-Benz .

Model history

It was in January 2014, on the North American International Auto Show presented (NAIAS) for the first time publicly and replaced since 15 March 2014, built between March 2007 and May 2014 C-Class of the 204 series . Series production of the sedan began on February 4, 2014. The station wagon ( T-model ) was presented for the first time on May 23, 2014 in the Bremen production plant; the market launch took place in September of the same year. The coupé, which has been delivered since December, premiered at the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2015. On February 29, 2016, the convertible version was presented at the Geneva Motor Show .

In March 2018, an extensive facelift - with 6,500 parts, over 50% of all parts were changed or replaced - and a diesel plug-in hybrid version was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. It was introduced on July 7, 2018.

Body styles

Sedan (W 205, V 205) and T-Model (S 205)

The four-door notchback sedan (W 205) and the station wagon ( T-model , S 205) grew in length by around 9.5 cm. For some Asian markets, a notchback sedan lengthened by around 10 cm is also available (V 205) (wheelbase 2900 mm).

Coupé (C 205) and Cabriolet (A 205)

The Coupé (C 205) is about 6 cm longer than its predecessor. The 205 series also included a convertible (A 205) .

Innovations

Weight reduction

The weight of the body shell of the 205 series is reduced by 70 kg due to the increased proportion of hot-formed steel parts, ultra-high-strength steel and aluminum. Most of the body parts visible from the outside are made of aluminum. Overall, the proportion of aluminum in the body increased from nine percent in the previous model to 48 percent. Another part of the total weight reduction of 100 kg is achieved with a smaller tank. This has a standard capacity of 41 liters including a reserve and thus 18 liters less than its predecessor. A larger fuel tank with 66 liters including a reserve is available on request.

landing gear

For the chassis technology, the larger series were used. The 205 is the first vehicle to feature the new modular rear-wheel drive architecture MRA. The new chassis has nothing in common with that of the previous series. The four-link front axle is made of aluminum, with a five- link axle at the rear. The agility control chassis with steel suspension and selective damping system is standard. These suspensions are offered in three versions: the comfort-oriented agility control suspension (standard with Exclusive), an agility control suspension with 15 mm lowering (standard with Avantgarde) and a sports suspension with sporty coordination of steering, damping and suspension 15 mm lowering (standard with AMG-Line). Since it shares the MRA platform with the next E-Class Mercedes-Benz series 213 (from 2016), the adaptive Airmatic air suspension with five different suspension modes is also available for the first time in the C-Class (standard on the C 350 e). This is unusual in the middle class , otherwise only the Citroën C5 has a comparable suspension ( hydropneumatics ) . Furthermore, Mercedes offers a continuously variable adaptive high-end steel chassis. The Dynamic Body Control suspension comes from the E-Class and has been further improved with the W205 facelift. It can be set in 3 levels using Dynamic Select: Comfort, Sport and Sport +.

automatic transmission

The 205 series should also be available with a 9-speed automatic transmission right from the start, which Mercedes-Benz presented for the first time at the IAA 2013 in September 2013 . Instead, it was announced in December 2013 that the 7-speed automatic 7G-TRONIC PLUS is available as an option. The 9-speed automatic 9G-TRONIC has been available for most engines since October 2016 ; the C 180 d, C 300 h and C 350 e will stay with the old 7-speed automatic.

Infotainment system

Furthermore, the model is the first from Mercedes-Benz to receive a touchpad for infotainment operation and a head-up display . As with competitors' pads, letters and numbers can be entered via the touchpad. The multimedia system can also be operated with the touchpad, but a rotary push button is still available.

A digital instrument cluster has been installed since the 2018 facelift.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid

Mercedes-Benz C 350 e plug-in hybrid

The C-Class of the 205 series is available in several full hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants:

The diesel engine full hybrid C 300 h (until April 2015: C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID ) has an electric motor integrated in the gearbox housing with a maximum output of 20 kW and a lithium-ion battery with 0.8 kWh of energy, which means that at low Speeds and very low load requirements, purely electric driving is enabled.

The gasoline engine plug-in hybrid C 350 e has an electric motor integrated in the gearbox housing with a maximum output of 60 kW and a torque of 340 Nm. In conjunction with the four-cylinder M274DEH20LA petrol engine, this results in a system output of 205 kW (279 hp) and a system torque of 600 Nm. According to the NEDC, a purely electric range of 31 km can be achieved. Since auxiliary units such as the water pump , vacuum pump , power steering pump and air conditioning compressor have been electrified, the conventional belt drive is no longer required. The generator is also eliminated, the 12-V power supply is a DC / DC converter fed from the high-voltage onboard network. Behind the rear axle is the approx. 100 kg, coolant-cooled lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 6.38 kWh, which increases the luggage compartment volume from 480 to 335 liters (sedan) or from 490–1510 to 450–1470 liters (T Model). It is a lithium iron phosphate battery consisting of 88 cells connected in series (22 Ah, 3.3 V) with a nominal voltage of 290 V. Overall, the C 350 e is 230 kg heavier than the comparable C 250.

Two more plug-in hybrid variants were added in 2019: the C 300 e (2.0 R4 gasoline engine plus electric motor) and the C 300 de (2.0 R4 diesel engine plus electric motor). Both drive variants are available in the body variants with notchback (Otto PHEV also optionally with 4matic all-wheel drive) and as T-model (station wagon). The transmission switched to a 9G-Tronic (instead of 7G-Tronic in the C350e), the power of the electric motor grew to 90 kW, the torque to 440 Nm. The Li-Ion battery switched to cells with NMC cell chemistry with a capacity of 13.5 kWh, which enables an electric range of around 50 km. With type 2, the charging connection remained on the rear bumper, but can now charge the battery in around two hours on two phases with a total of 7.4 kW. Thanks to the promotion of the environmental bonus and the change in the taxation of the monetary benefit of privately used company cars, it is expected that these PHEV variants will increase significantly in demand and sales.

Equipment lines

Mercedes-Benz C 200 with standard equipment

The designation for the equipment lines has been completely changed after more than two decades, so that in addition to the basic equipment, the Avantgarde , Exclusive and AMG Line are now available, each of which can be selected independently of one another for the exterior and interior.

In the standard equipment, the Mercedes-Benz star is no longer mounted on the bonnet, but embedded in the radiator grille. Black and white are available as standard solid colors. The beltline trim strip is made of polished aluminum, while the window frame is black. The C180d, C160 and C180 have 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers as standard, all other models already have light alloy wheels in the basic equipment. All models have heat-insulating green glass all around. The headlights are made using halogen technology, but have LED daytime running lights. The rear lights also use LED technology (see picture of the sedan until 2018).

Like its predecessor, the chassis is equipped with the selective damping system. The smaller engines are linked to a six-speed manual gearbox with an automatic start-stop system and have speed-dependent direct steering. In addition to ABS, ESP, various airbags - including a knee airbag for the driver - the safety equipment also includes the collision warning system Collision Prevention Assist Plus .

Additional standard equipment on all models includes automatic climate control, a leather multifunction steering wheel in three-spoke design and the Audio 20 USB audio system with a seven-inch color display and a resolution of 800 × 480 pixels.

avant-garde

The Avantgarde equipment line contains a large number of chrome elements. There is a chrome clip on the front bumper and a double chrome strip (until 2015) in the outer air inlets. The radiator grille, in which the brand logo is embedded, consists of two slats in matt silver with chrome inserts. These chrome inserts visually extend over the side skirts into the rear bumper. Compared to the basic model, the window frames are also made of polished aluminum and the B-pillar is glossy black. The rear bumper has a diffuser look. The Avantgarde line also has a chassis with lowering (can be deselected on request). 17-inch light-alloy wheels in five-spoke design painted gray are included as standard.

Exclusive

The Exclusive equipment line is the only model in the 205 series to have the classic Mercedes-Benz chrome radiator grille with a Mercedes-Benz star on the bonnet. The standard multi-spoke alloy wheels are 17 inches. Otherwise, the equipment is essentially the same as the Avantgarde line with the exception of the lowering, which is not included in the Exclusive .

AMG Line

The predecessor model nor as AMG Sports package guided AMG Line is characterized by AMG aprons and -Schweller and by gray painted 18-inch AMG alloy wheels in five-spoke design. Two aluminum tailpipe trims are attached to the rear bumper. Otherwise the equipment corresponds to that of the Avantgarde and Exclusive lines . In addition, there is a sports suspension with a lowering of 15 mm, a sports direct steering and perforated brake discs at the front.

Technical specifications

Since the facelift in 2018, a 48-volt system with a belt-driven starter generator has been used in all models.

Daimler AG will also use the previous refrigerant R134a in the 205 series . Strictly speaking, this refrigerant has not been allowed to be used in new cars since the beginning of 2011. Mercedes circumvents the ban, however, with a type approval based on the old 204 series. The company still wants to forego the use of the less climate-damaging, but extremely flammable R1234yf .
