The M 270 is a four- cylinder in-line petrol engine from Mercedes-Benz , which was presented in November 2011 in the second generation of the B-Class (W 246) . It thus replaces the M 266 series and, as the M 274, also the M 271 model in the medium term .

Production takes place in the Mercedes-Benz works in Stuttgart- Untertürkheim and at MDC Power GmbH in Kölleda . Production of the engine, developed independently by Daimler, began on July 29, 2011.

The most noticeable technical feature of this engine is the possibility of transverse and longitudinal installation. While the engine is installed transversely in the compact front-wheel drive models A- and B- Classes and has the designation M 270 there , in the other models it is arranged lengthways and is referred to here as M 274 . This requires a very compact construction of the unit. For this purpose, the ancillary units were arranged closely and the cylinder spacing was designed to be 90 mm. Another development goal was weight reduction. The all-aluminum engine received a hollow cast crankshaft, which reduces the weight of the basic version to 137 kg thanks to the compact design.

All engines in this series are charged by an exhaust gas turbocharger. Despite the supercharging, the engines are highly compressed with a ratio of 10.3: 1. Initially the engine was built with a displacement of 1.6 l (1595 cm³, bore 83.0 mm, stroke 73.7 mm). In September 2012, a variant with a displacement of 2.0 l (1991 cm³, bore 83.0 mm, stroke 92.0 mm) and 155 kW (211 hp) in the A 250 BlueEFFICIENCY model followed .

The M 270 or M 274 is closely related to the BlueDIRECT V engines M 276 and M 278 . Accordingly, it has third-generation direct injection with jet-guided combustion, which is implemented via an A-nozzle piezo injector. In addition to the conventional, homogeneous mixture formation, stratified charging is also implemented in the large-displacement derivatives , which, in conjunction with charging, represents a novelty in engine technology.

A single-piston pump with a volume control valve integrated in the pump module is used as the high-pressure pump. This generates a map-controlled working pressure of up to 200 bar. Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber up to five times per work cycle, depending on the load range. A multi-spark ignition ignites the air-fuel mixture there.

The engine has two overhead chain driven camshafts . The timing is adjustable on both camshafts . In conjunction with the turbocharger, this enables what is known as scavenging , in which the opening times of the inlet and outlet valves partially overlap. Here, the cold fresh air drawn in flushes the hot exhaust gas still in the combustion chamber into the exhaust manifold , which significantly improves the cylinder filling. Due to the increased gas flow in the exhaust system, the turbocharger responds much faster, especially at low speeds. This avoids turbo lag. Thanks to direct injection, the fresh air is not mixed with fuel when it flows into the cylinder, which prevents purging losses (unburned gasoline escaping into the exhaust manifold).

The 1.6 l engines are optionally equipped with the so-called Camtronic system . This can switch to a smaller intake cam in partial load ranges, which enables a higher intake manifold pressure and thus avoidance of throttle losses. In conjunction with the variable intake camshaft, this allows load control with the camshaft when the loads are appropriate. With the M-270 and M-274 engines, a three-stage load control is implemented when operating with a small inlet cam: At very low loads, a reduced valve lift is selected so that the throttle valve has to be opened further for the same amount of air. At medium loads, the switch is made to the larger intake cams via, and at higher loads the intake manifold pressure is also increased via the turbocharger.

The compact design of the engine and the combustion process require sophisticated engine cooling . The coolant flows through a two-part water jacket with cross-flow cooling and through cooling channels only three millimeters thick between the spark plugs and the fuel injectors to the heat-loaded areas. In order to guarantee acceptable fuel consumption even at higher speeds, full load enrichment is only necessary at speeds above 200 km / h thanks to the efficient engine cooling system to cool the cylinder head. During a cold start, thanks to a demand-controlled water pump with a flow-optimized ball valve, no coolant flows through the engine. This leads to the operating temperature being reached quickly and thus contributes to lower fuel consumption and better wear behavior. The vehicle interior is also heated as quickly as possible. The thermostat also contains a flow-optimized ball valve. This is electronically regulated by the engine control depending on the driving style and ambient conditions and sets the optimal coolant temperature.

The oil pump was also equipped with a needs-based control, which contributes to further fuel savings. This is also the aim of the ECO start / stop function , which automatically switches the engine off and starts again without delay when it comes to short stops, such as traffic jams or red lights. It is the result of the simultaneous development of motors and gearboxes for transverse installation. For example, the control unit of the 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission communicates with the engine control unit in order to ensure the best possible response.
