The Mercedes-Benz 212 series ( E-Class ) is a passenger car model of the upper middle class of Mercedes-Benz , which from the beginning of 2009 to January 2016 (saloon) and May was 2,016 (combi) built.

It replaced the previous model series 211 and was available as a sedan (W 212) or station wagon (S 212) . There is a long version (V 212) for the Chinese market . Coupé and Cabriolet form the independent 207 series as the C 207 and A 207, respectively .

Model history

General

W212 rear view

The sedan premiered on January 10, 2009 at the Detroit Motor Show ; delivery and the showroom premiere in the dealerships began on March 28, 2009. The sedan is advertised with the slogan “Welcome home. The E-Class. ”The estate had its world premiere at the 2009 IAA . The first models were delivered on November 21, 2009. The T-model is advertised with the slogan “Elegance creates space. E-Class T-Model. "

Compared to its predecessor, the car looks more angular and bulky, a design that was already beginning to be recognized in the C-Class of the 204 series in 2007. The "four-eyes face" introduced by the 210 series in 1995 was modified by angular headlights. The front is now swept, the grille a little larger than on the previous model. The rear wheel cutouts are accentuated with beads tapering towards the rear.

Mercedes-Benz increased comfort on long journeys primarily through body technology with greater rigidity, improved seats and a newly developed chassis, the shock absorbers of which automatically adapt to the respective driving situation. The engines, which all meet the EU-5 emissions regulations (from model year 2015 onwards, they will be switched to engines in accordance with the EU-6 emissions regulations), work as direct injection and, according to the factory, consume up to 23% less fuel than before. The c w value is 0.25; this is a reduction of four percent compared to the previous model. This makes the W 212 the passenger car in its class with the lowest drag coefficient, which is also achieved, among other things, by an automatically controlled fan louvre that controls the air flow into the engine compartment.

The automatic transmission of the six- and eight-cylinder engines is now operated with a selector lever on the steering column, that of the four-cylinder engines was operated using the gear knob in the middle until September 2011. Since the beginning of October 2011, the four-cylinder models equipped with the seven-speed automatic also have the selector lever on the steering column. The E 350 BlueTEC has been the world's first car to be equipped with a nine-speed automatic since September 2013.

A special feature of the T-model (station wagon) for its vehicle class is that two additional, retractable (child) seats (approved up to 1.40 m height) can be ordered for the trunk. If they are straightened up, the two additional passengers sit opposite to the direction of travel.

Technology and innovation

In order to achieve a high level of driving comfort, the static torsional rigidity has been improved by up to 30% compared to the previous model. As part of the development, the connection points between the chassis and the body, as well as the drive train and the body, were improved so that the vibrations are no longer transmitted as strongly to the body.

The chassis technology was newly developed. An amplitude-dependent damping system that works in a hydromechanical way, called Direct Control chassis, and does not need any sensors or electronics, is standard. When driving normally, the damping forces are automatically reduced - if the shock absorber is excited, for example when cornering quickly, the maximum damping force is activated and the entire vehicle is stabilized. A three- link system with MacPherson struts was developed for the front axle . The use of aluminum has reduced the weight of the front axle by 12% compared to its predecessor. The struts are installed upright, which reduces the forces acting on the tension strut bearing. A multi-link axle is installed at the rear , which has been further modified compared to the original development from the 1980s. To reduce the weight of the car, the struts and wheel carriers are mainly made of aluminum, only the subframe is made of high-strength sheet steel. In addition to the Direct Control chassis, the Avantgarde equipment line comes standard with the Agility Control chassis for a surcharge . It is sporty with stronger torsion bar stabilizers and the body is lowered by 15 millimeters. The third suspension option is the air suspension called Airmatic .

The steering has also been redesigned. A servo-assisted rack-and-pinion steering with speed-dependent power steering assistance (parameter steering) is standard . The response behavior and steering comfort have been improved compared to the predecessor by a different design of the central bearing. A Direct-Steer system is available as an option. As the steering wheel angle increases, the ratio becomes more direct, which reduces steering wheel movements, for example when parking or driving through a roundabout.

All seats have pipes filled on the inside, which means that an additional foam filling is incorporated under the fabric or leather cover. This technically demanding process is only used at Mercedes. In the basic model and the Avantgarde equipment line , the seat covers are contoured in the transverse direction, in the Elegance - in memory of the seat design of the 1960s and 1970s at Mercedes - in the longitudinal direction. The thickness of the foam is also not the same at all points on the seat and varies in a total of eight points depending on the part of the body on top. The fabric of the fabrics has up to 30 percent wool , which improves moisture absorption at high temperatures. The driver's seat is equipped as standard with a lumbar support with which the lumbar spine is supported. In conjunction with the memory function , which is available as an option , the driver and front passenger seats are equipped with an electropneumatically adjustable four-way lumbar support, which can be used to adjust the support laterally, in height and shape. Compared to its predecessor, the backrest height has been increased by a good 30%, which means that the shoulders are better supported.

To allow more space in the interior, the body is 16 millimeters longer, 10 millimeters lower and 32 millimeters wider than that of the previous model. The wheelbase is also 20 millimeters larger.

The surface of the instrument panel, which can be designed in two colors on request, consists of a skin made of polyurethane foam . It is also back-foamed, which results in precise edges and it feels pleasant . In conjunction with the optionally available Exclusive package , the dashboard is covered with high-quality planware and accentuated with decorative stitching. In addition, the headlining, sun visors and pillar trim are covered with Alcantara in the package. The glove compartment has a capacity of around 6.8 liters and can be cooled by the automatic air conditioning. A twelve-volt socket and a connection socket for an external audio device are also integrated. If required, there is also space for the media interface for connecting an MP3 player.

Five instruments inform the driver about the vehicle speed, engine speed, time, coolant temperature and tank content. With the so-called “black panel technology”, the warning and indicator lights distributed across the individual round instruments are only visible when the ignition is switched on or in the event of a fault. In the middle of the large speedometer there is a two-part, white backlit monochrome central display with a diagonal of 4.5 inches, which can be used in the upper area for changing displays (e.g. mileage, range, distance traveled, consumption). It has been a color display since summer 2011.

In the center of the cockpit is a color display in 16: 9 format that provides information on all functions of the Comand infotainment system, with different sizes being offered depending on the device. For the Audio 20 and Audio 50 APS devices , there is a 5.8-inch display, and for Comand APS it is 7.0-inch. The devices are operated via a controller in the tunnel cladding.

The standard equipment (formerly Classic equipment line ) includes the Thermatic comfort automatic climate control , which controls the ventilation and temperature with the help of sensors for the driver and front passenger, offers a cooled glove compartment and two air outlets in the rear area. The Direct Control chassis with adaptive damping system automatically adjusts the shock absorbers to the driving situation. Attention Assist , available for the first time from Mercedes, analyzes driving behavior, warns the driver in the speed range between 80 and 180 km / h as soon as signs of fatigue or inattention are detected, and advises them to take a break. The standard equipment includes, on the outside, rear lights in LED technology (except for indicators), daytime running lights with halogen technology at the front next to the fog lights, H7 projection headlights, radiator grille with three chrome-plated slats, 16-inch alloy wheels with nine spokes (17 inches with 4Matic all-wheel drive ). A radio and CD system is offered as a radio system with Radio Audio 20 , which also includes a central color display above the center console. The device is operated via a controller with pushbuttons on the console between the seats. It complements the operating options of the multifunction steering wheel.

The standard equipment can be modified with two equipment lines, Elegance and Avantgarde , as well as with an Exclusive package , an Exterior Sports package and an AMG Sports package .

The Elegance line emphasizes the elegant and classic character of the model. The beltline trim strip is polished in stainless steel ; Chrome trim strips are attached to the side and on the front and rear bumpers. The radiator grille appears with four chrome-plated slats and there have been 17-inch alloy wheels with ten 10 double spokes (17 inches with 4 Matic ) since 2012 and 16-inch alloy wheels until 2011 . In the interior there are storage boxes under the front seats and in the center console, as well as lighting behind the trim and in the doors. The decorative parts are made of walnut, on request in brown stained ash.

The Avantgarde line makes the car appear sportier and more dynamic. In addition to the Elegance line, it includes , among other things, a 15 mm lower body, a radiator grille with three chrome-plated slats, a slightly modified front apron, 17-inch light-alloy wheels with 5 double spokes, and since September 2011 square tailpipes that have been firmly integrated into the rear bumper, and until 2011 too the Intelligent Light System (including bi-xenon headlights, daytime running lights and indicators in LED technology - but without Adaptive High Beam Assist) and trim in dark ash (optionally aluminum). From the beginning of 2012, models with the Avantgarde equipment line will also receive a new three-spoke leather steering wheel from the CLS .

Changes during the model years

The E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY with a start-stop system had been on order since July 2009 and had been available since September 2009. The pelvic airbag for the driver and front passenger was installed as standard .

The MercedesSport package could be ordered as an optional extra in summer 2010 (see also below ). Also from this model year, the LED daytime running lights were delivered in a different row, the previous boomerang shape was reserved exclusively for the AMG sports package and otherwise replaced by an LED strip. At the same time, the Avantgarde equipment line received the Intelligent Light System as standard, including the high beam assistant, which was previously an optional extra.

From December there were new xenon burners with a color temperature of 5000 Kelvin instead of 4200 Kelvin.

From January 2011, Mercedes also offered the sedan with a bivalent natural gas drive. The model known as the E 200 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY , which is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission, has an output of 1.8 liters and a torque of 240 Nm, as in the previous model. The top speed is 224 km / h. While gas consumption is given as an average of 5.5 to 5.7 kilograms per 100 kilometers, gasoline consumption is on average 8.1 to 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The size of the petrol tank is 59 liters, that of the gas tank 19.5 kilograms. From then on, the E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY , E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY also received the six-speed gearbox with start-stop function as standard, with which it consumes 0.3 liters less per 100 km than the corresponding predecessors. The E 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with standard 7G-Tronic was launched . The 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with rear-wheel drive could optionally be ordered with the 7G-Tronic Plus , which now includes a start-stop system (consumption minus 1.0 liters per 100 km). From now on, the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY was also delivered with the 7G-Tronic as standard.

In July 2011, the Comand APS NTG 4 was replaced by COMAND Online NTG 4.5 , which has internet access in the stand. This change brought updated maps with it. In addition, the E 500 was equipped as standard with a front and rear apron in AMG design. All E-Class variants received the rod-shaped LED daytime running lights as standard, the halogen lights previously used were omitted. The price for the Avantgarde equipment line fell from EUR 3,511 to EUR 2,261, but the price no longer included the Intelligent Light System . In the line, all tailpipes are double-flow trapezoidal and integrated into the rear apron.

From September 2011 many of the previous engines were offered in a revised version. Among other things, the previous E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY of the M 272 was replaced by the M 276 and the E 500 BlueEFFICIENCY of the M 273 by the M 278 . A version of the E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY reduced to 185 kW has also been added as the E 300 BlueEFFICIENCY . All models except for the six-cylinder diesel and the E 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY now had the automatic start-stop system called ECO-Stop-Start . In addition, the instrument cluster was now delivered with a central color display as standard. Also from summer, the classic naturally aspirated engine in the E 63 AMG was replaced by the one already familiar from the CLS 63 AMG . The power remains the same, the torque has been increased to 700 Nm, and thanks to an automatic start-stop system, fuel consumption has dropped by 2.8 liters to 9.8 liters per 100 km. In addition, from summer all vehicles with the AMG sports package received the LED strip instead of the LED daytime running lights in the form of the boomerang. From this point on, all vehicles with the Avantgarde equipment line , the AMG Sports package and the Exterior Sports package received a twin-pipe exhaust system with angular tailpipe trims, as was the case with the E 500 . Another change in summer 2011 was the introduction of the 7G-Tronic Plus with automatic start-stop in the E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY , E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY models . The selector lever in the center console, which is now located on the steering wheel in the automatic models, was omitted. At the same time, the extension CGI in the model name of the direct-injection gasoline engines was omitted .

From December 2011, the E 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY , the E 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY now also had the revised seven-speed automatic with automatic start-stop. The E 350 BlueTEC and E 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY models have since been equipped with the revised 7G-Tronic Plus , but without an automatic start-stop system.

In January 2012, the exterior sports package was supplemented by a front and rear apron and side skirts from the AMG sports package . In addition, vehicles equipped with the Elegance equipment line roll on 17-inch light alloy wheels. Models equipped with the Avantgarde line received a new steering wheel from the CLS .

The hybrid models E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID and E 400 HYBRID were introduced from mid-2012 . These were previously presented at the North American International Auto Show 2012. While the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID was only sold on the European continent, the E 400 HYBRID was initially only offered on the American market and then also on some Asian markets (e.g. Japan and China). The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is the first diesel hybrid model from German production. It combines the 2.1-liter, 150 kW (204 hp) paid-line four-cylinder diesel engine ( OM 651 DE 22 LA ) from the E 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY with a 20 kW (27 hp), of a lithium-ion battery powered Electric motor, which reduces consumption to 4.2 l diesel (NEDC) per 100 km and CO 2 emissions to 109 g / km. It is the most economical vehicle in the upper middle class in this driving cycle . The same electric module was combined in the E 400 HYBRID with the V6 petrol engine in the E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY ( M 276 DE 35 ). When starting, only the electric motors work; they can also be driven purely electrically for a few kilometers up to a speed of 35 km / h. Like all modern hybrid models, these also have recuperation technology so that energy is recovered when braking. In addition, so-called sailing begins when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator and lets the car roll. Conventional vehicles lose momentum due to the braking effect of the engine. In hybrid vehicles, however, the combustion engine is switched off when the driver takes off the accelerator.

The smaller battery of the hybrid module compared to competing models with a capacity of 0.8 kWh does not restrict the space in the interior or the trunk (sedan: 540 l), which is an advantage over competing models such as the Lexus GS 450h (2.6 kWh ), in which the trunk volume is given as 330 l, and the Audi A6 2.0 TFSI hybrid (1.3 kWh), whose trunk volume drops from 530 to 375 l.

At the Geneva Motor Show 2012, Mercedes-Benz presented the most economical E-Class model at the time. The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, called the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition , was able to further reduce its consumption to 4.5 l diesel per 100 km with the help of an aerodynamics package, electronic power steering, a longer rear axle ratio and tires with low rolling resistance . In contrast to the standard E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, this model can not be combined with the 7G-Tronic Plus , but is only delivered with a six-speed manual transmission. It has been available since the end of March 2012.

The “BlueEFFICIENCY” badge on the fender was omitted from vehicles produced from June 2012 . In addition, the Audio 50 APS is no longer available; as with all other model series, it will be replaced by the Becker MAP-Pilot system .

In February 2013, the name BlueEFFICIENCY was largely dropped . From now on, it is reserved for particularly economical vehicles.

With the 2015 model year, which was delivered from September 2014, the four-cylinder diesel engines, including BlueTEC technology , have now been converted to the Euro 6 emissions standard. With the exception of the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, all diesel models now meet the Euro 6 emissions standard. The E 500 was also converted to the Euro 6 emissions standard. The E 300 (4MATIC) and E 350 (4MATIC) models were discontinued without replacement. The 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission was now also available as an option for the rear-wheel drive models E 220 BlueTEC and E 250 BlueTEC ; the E 300 BlueTEC received it as standard . In addition, the E 220 BlueTEC BlueEFFICIENCY Edition was now also available as a T-model . As a sedan, only the six-speed manual transmission was available for this model; the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission was installed in the T-model . The E 400 now has a displacement of 3.5 liters and works in shifts. The previous E 400 had a displacement of 3.0 liters and was operated in a homogeneous manner. The visible tailpipe trims for the standard equipment of the Elegance line, which were no longer available with the 2013 facelift, could be ordered on request.

The model year 2016 brought the introduction of the Comand version NTG 5.1. The new E 220 BlueTEC 4MATIC model was also introduced. In addition, the Becker Map Pilot navigation system has been replaced by the Garmin Map Pilot system.

Full LED headlights

In January 2013, an extensive facelift of the E-Class was presented at the Detroit Motor Show. The front end has been completely redesigned. For the first time in the E-Class in the Avantgarde equipment variant, the star was optionally integrated into the radiator grille, which is no longer optically integrated into the bonnet but is designed separately. The basic version and the Elegance equipment line received a grill with three slats and a star on the bonnet.

After 18 years of being in two parts, the front headlights were once again combined to form a unit (as most recently with the 124 series), but the four-eye optics were retained by the light strips of the daytime running lights, which are implemented as standard using LEDs. For the first time, the low beam was implemented using LED technology; full LED headlights, which replace the previous bi-xenon headlights, were offered on request. The side chrome trim strips are attached further down, the pontoon hip swing that was exhibited was removed after four years. At the rear, the aprons and the lights, which now have all LED technology, have been redesigned.

In the interior, the instrument cluster has been reduced to three analog clocks, the middle of which has a digital display. In addition, the steering wheel, the center console and the ventilation nozzles, between which an analog clock is now placed, as in the S-Class, have been modified. Furthermore, with the facelift, the manual lumbar support on the driver's seat, which was previously standard for all model variants regardless of the upholstery selected (fabric, leather), was no longer available .

In addition, many new assistance and safety systems were introduced.

Series production started on March 1, 2013. The new model was launched on April 13, 2013.

Production of the sedan was discontinued in January 2016.

The last station wagon in the series, a black E350 4-Matic, rolled off the production line in the Sindelfingen plant on May 11, 2016.

Engines and gears

The four-cylinder models received a six-speed manual transmission, the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY was delivered with a five-speed automatic transmission until May 2011, then with the seven-speed automatic transmission with an automatic start-stop system. The six- and eight-cylinder models received the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission as standard . From summer 2011, all models received the revised 7G-Tronic Plus with start-stop system .

The revised E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 190 kW (265 hp) and 620 Nm appeared in July 2010 ; the previous E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was slightly optimized and continued under the name E 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY . The E 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 150 kW (204 PS) was therefore no longer part of the engine range. The E 200 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY was available from dealers from March 2011 . From September 2011, the new V6 and V8 petrol engines already known from the CLS were delivered, which have the third generation of petrol direct injection , multiple injection and multiple spark ignition. In addition, the new E 300 BlueEFFICIENCY with 185 kW (252 hp) was delivered from September 2011 .

In contrast to its predecessor, an eight-cylinder diesel engine was no longer offered in the W 212 due to the downsizing strategy to save fuel and CO 2 emissions.

With the facelift, the range of engines changed, in some cases significantly. While the four-cylinder petrol engines were new developments and developed 135 kW (184 hp) in the E 200 and 155 kW (211 hp) in the E 250 from a displacement of 2.0 liters , the previous six-cylinder petrol engines remained unchanged. The new 3.0-liter V6 biturbo in the E 400 (4MATIC) has an output of 245 kW (333 hp) and, like the four-cylinder, meets the Euro 6 standard. It is the first six-cylinder gasoline engine from Mercedes-Benz that is supercharged compared to the previous naturally aspirated engines . A new AMG model, which can optionally be powered by all-wheel drive and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in under four seconds, appeared in June 2013.

The consumption of the four-cylinder diesel engines was slightly reduced, while the six-cylinder diesel range was fundamentally changed: two power levels of the previous 3.0-liter common-rail diesel were offered with the standard 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-Tronic , in In both cases, the Urea injection technology called BlueTEC has been expanded to reduce emissions and comply with the Euro 6 standard: the E 300 with 170 kW (231 hp) and the E 350 with 185 kW (252 hp), which is known as the The first Mercedes model was delivered from September 2014 with the newly developed 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission .

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test Crash test star 5.svg

The E-Class should take on the pioneering role in terms of safety. A large number of driver assistance systems , extensive passive safety elements and advanced pedestrian protection are finding their way into the E-Class .

The standard elements include an extremely stable passenger cell, especially on the sides of the vehicle, front airbags that trigger in two stages depending on the severity, side airbags, window airbags, knee airbags and, for the first time, pelvic airbags (introduced by Mercedes as a pelvisbag), an active bonnet, which is activated in the event of a crash after a pedestrian accident in the rear area by 50 mm and thus offers the pedestrian a larger crumple zone, an improved pre-safe (accident prevention system) with automatic closing of the side windows and, if necessary, the sunroof as well as the drowsiness warning Attention Assist .

Expand the safety technology can be explained by a number of special features such as an automatic emergency braking, improved adaptive cruise control Distronic radar-controlled Brake Assist BAS Plus , intelligent night vision assistant with pedestrian detection, Intelligent Light System with adaptive high-beam assistant , traffic sign recognition , lane departure warning , lane change assistant and parking assistant, which are described in more detail below.

Optional extras

The 212 series offers many new developments as special equipment that were first introduced in a Mercedes. Other special equipment was taken over from the S-Class and modified.

General optional equipment is seat heating and air conditioning for the driver and front passenger, comfort individual seats in the rear (sedan only), multicontour seats with massage and driving dynamics function, memory package in which the front seats are fully electrically adjustable and the seat positions can be saved, panoramic glass roof, the keyless go locking system or a burglary / theft alarm system with towing protection and interior monitoring.

Among other things, there are also the following special equipment:

Distance radar Distronic Plus

The Distronic Plus distance radar maintains the distance to the vehicle in front and accelerates independently if the distance increases. What is new about this system is that the vehicle is braked to a standstill if necessary. It also serves to prevent accidents or reduce the severity of the accident by braking the vehicle if a collision is imminent and unavoidable. The automatic emergency braking function is designed in such a way that 1.6 seconds before an unavoidable collision is decelerated with 40% of the braking force and the driver is warned acoustically and visually, 0.6 seconds in advance the vehicle is then braked with maximum deceleration.

Agility Control sports suspension

(standard with the Avantgarde equipment line and AMG sports package )

In contrast to the standard Direct Control suspension with steel springs, the springs and damping are tighter and the vehicle is lowered by 15 mm. A speed-sensitive sports steering system with a more direct ratio is also part of it. Optionally, the comfort chassis of the Classic and Elegance equipment lines is also available for the Avantgarde equipment line at no extra charge .

Parktronic parking aid with parking guidance

The Parktronic, including parking guidance, makes parking easier by making clearances acoustically and using LED displays inside. The parking guidance provides information on the instrument cluster about the necessary angle of the steering wheel, steering angle and turning points when parking.

Driving dynamics package

The driving dynamics package was only offered for the Coupé and Cabriolet ( Mercedes-Benz 207 series ).

Thermotronic air conditioning

Compared to the standard Thermatic, the comfort automatic climate control Thermotronic is divided into three room zones, two areas in the front and one area in the rear. For the first time, three different climate styles can be selected. Diffuse ensures a low air speed while at the same time distributing air over a large area. Medium offers a medium setting and with Focus there is a direct flow of large amounts of air, mainly through air outlets in the middle area.

The system works completely automatically, supported by numerous sensors. Two of them monitor the interior temperature, four the temperature of the air flowing out of the ventilation nozzles and one records the intensity and direction of radiation of the sun. In addition, there is also a dew point and pollutant gas sensor, which automatically activates the circulating air if the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide concentrations are too high , for example during long journeys in tunnels.

There are two control units for control, one in the center console and another for the rear area on the back of the tunnel lining. Both display the selected settings, which can be made using rocker switches, via organic light-emitting diodes ( OLED ).

The air distribution is done by ten electric motors and 20 ventilation nozzles. The heating output increased by 10% to 11 kW compared to the previous model. The diesel models and 4-cylinder models with gasoline direct injection have a heat exchanger with six heating elements because, due to their high thermal efficiency , they do not emit enough heating power at low outside temperatures. The output of the air conditioning compressor, which now works continuously, increased by 5% to more than 8 kW.

Light package / Intelligent Light System with adaptive high beam assistant

The lighting package initially includes the second-level Intelligent Light System with bi-xenon headlights with cornering light function and LED daytime running lights; the fog lights in the front apron are omitted.

The package also includes the Adaptive High Beam Assistant , in which - controlled by a camera - the low beam is automatically and continuously adjusted so that the light cone ends under the rear lights of the next vehicle in front or is dimmed if there is oncoming traffic. This means that a maximum range of up to 300 meters in low beam is possible. When there is no other vehicle left, the system fades in the high beam continuously and with a smooth transition. There is no sudden change of light for the driver - the driver's eyes can easily adjust to the different lighting.

In the sedan and estate, the Avantgarde line will initially include the lighting package including the Intelligent Light System and Adaptive High Beam Assistant from the 2010 modification year ; later these systems will be subject to a separate surcharge.

Airmatic air suspension

(standard on E 500 )

The Airmatic was modified compared to the previous version in the 211 series , there still called Airmatic Dual Control . For the first time, it is available with an electronically controlled damping system that works continuously and can regulate each wheel individually. Seven sensors monitor the driving situation and the position of the body. A control unit, which receives additional information about speed, steering wheel angle and data from the engine, determines the optimal characteristics of the individual shock absorbers. The damping force is automatically adjusted depending on the condition of the road and the vehicle. Depending on the driving style, softer damping is used on poor roads, and the setting is tighter when driving dynamically. Using a switch in the center console, the driver can choose between two different tuning modes - Comfort and Sport . In the latter mode, the hydraulic forces of the shock absorbers are increased.

A world premiere is the MacPherson air suspension strut for the front axle, which for the first time combines shock absorbers and wheel guidance with the air suspension in one module.

MercedesSport

The MercedesSport package has been available as an optional extra for all four models since mid-2010 . In the context of the so-called "add-on principle", in contrast to conventional tuning , the original add-on parts are not exchanged. Rather, the individual parts are added to the existing body. There is a choice of spoilers for the front, the side skirts, the rear, a rear apron cover with diffuser optics, covers for the fog lights and 18-inch light alloy wheels in two-tone design. The sports suspension with stiffer dampers lowers the car by up to 15 millimeters. There is also a sports brake system with perforated brake discs. A four-spoke sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, illuminated stainless steel door sill panels and special floor mats are available for the interior.

The new package was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010.

Multimedia systems

Since the end of 2010, the Audio 20 CD can be expanded to include the Navigation 20 , creating a navigation center with entertainment connections and displays such as Reality View Pro.

As the simplest navigation system to start with, the Audio 50 APS is an entertainment system with DVD navigation and 2D map display.

The Comand APS has a hard disk, some of which can also be used for your own MP3 files, and a 3D map display.

Both systems can be expanded to include the Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system with 15 speakers and 600 watts of power. The Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG (15 loudspeakers, 1200 watts) has also been available as a high-end sound system since mid-2012 .

Night vision assistant plus

With an infrared camera, the entire area of the high beam is shown on the central display as a grayscale image. In contrast to a thermal imaging camera, this system requires additional infrared headlights. These glow - invisible to humans - with permanent high beam, so that objects without heat (e.g. branches or lost objects) are visible. Another advantage is the image quality, which is inherently significantly worse with thermal imaging cameras. People are recognized by the system and made particularly recognizable on the monitor with a frame. In the E-Class, in contrast to the S-Class, the night vision image cannot be displayed in the driver's field of vision between the speedometer and the rev counter. It is only displayed in the monitor of the navigation system.

Seats

The standard seats can be upgraded with numerous extensions.

In the actively ventilated front seats, four fans in the seat cushion and backrest draw in cool air from the area under the seat and distribute it below the seat surface.

The multicontour seat introduced in the previous model has been expanded in technical terms. The side panels can now be adjusted by a total of nine centimeters, previously it was only 5 centimeters. A front air cushion increases the seat depth for the first time by up to 50 millimeters.

The active multicontour seat is an extension of the multicontour seat. Piezo valves on the air chambers change the volume of the air chambers depending on the steering wheel angle, driving speed and lateral acceleration, which ensures greater lateral support. This seat also has a massage function in the backrest, which consists of seven air chambers.

For the first time, individual seats can be ordered for the rear of the limousine, with a large storage compartment with cup holders in the middle. Seat heating and independent headrests are part of this.

A third row of seats with two seats for the trunk can also be ordered in the station wagon. This can be lowered into the loading floor and is directed against the direction of travel, similar to the Dos-à-Dos seating arrangement, based on the two rear rows of seats. Access is via the trunk door. The seats are not suitable for adults.

Track package

The lane package offers a lane keeping and a blind spot assistant. The lane markings are recognized by a camera behind the windshield and a warning is triggered by steering wheel vibration if the driver leaves the lane unintentionally.

With Blind Spot Assist, the area behind the vehicle is monitored using radar sensors. If another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area, a red LED lights up in the respective exterior mirror. If the driver starts to change lanes, an acoustic warning is given.

Traffic sign recognition

The system uses a forward-looking camera to recognize signs with speed restrictions and displays them in the instrument cluster.
