The Unimog 425 is the first series of heavy Unimogs from Mercedes-Benz . It was presented at the DLG exhibition in September 1974 in Frankfurt as the Unimog U 120 . It was manufactured by Daimler-Benz between 1975 and 1988 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau . There were 3135 vehicles in three types, which were marketed as Unimog U 1300 and U 1500 . The 435 series , which was introduced at the same time, was built in significantly larger numbers, but has the same angular cab type and can be distinguished from the 425 series at first glance by its longer wheelbase . The design of the vehicle has been retained in the Unimog to this day. The 425 was replaced by the Unimog 427.

technology

The Unimog 425 is a two-axle truck with a cranked ladder frame and rear-wheel drive with switchable front-wheel drive. Like all other Unimogs, it has four wheels of the same size and rigid portal axles with oil pressure shock absorbers and coil springs that are guided on push tubes and a Panhard rod . The brake system is a compressed air-operated hydraulic dual-circuit brake system that acts on disc brakes on all wheels; A trailer braking system was also available on request. For attachments , PTO shafts are available for front, rear and center output, which can be switched in two stages (540 min −1 and 1000 min −1 ). There is also power steering and control hydraulics. The vehicle is powered by the six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 352 diesel engine with exhaust gas turbocharging and an output of 92 or 110 kW (125 or 150 hp).

Innovation as compared to the previous series is the pneumatic transmission of the type UG 3 / 40-8 . It has four gears that can be shifted into two groups with a flange-mounted planetary gear. There is only one shift lever that is used to shift according to the eight-speed H shift pattern. When shifting from 4th to 5th gear, the transmission is shifted back to 1st gear while at the same time shifting from the first to the second group. The transmission has no reverse gear, instead there is an intermediate gear between the drive shaft and the countershaft; the direction of travel is switched with a separate lever. In the reverse position, the planetary gear is only slightly geared down (1: 1.03), so that you can drive backwards almost as fast as forwards. The second group of the transmission can therefore be blocked.

An agricultural gearbox was also available for agricultural customers. This is an additional three-stage planetary gear which, in addition to the normal gear stage, also has the two stages of working gear and creeping gear . This results in 24 forward and just as many reverse gears instead of 8. In connection with the agricultural gearbox, a pneumatic double clutch is installed instead of the standard single- disk dry clutch .
