Mercedes-Benz MCC ( Micro Compact Car ) is a concept vehicle from Mercedes-Benz that was presented in two versions in March 1994 and was used as a model for the Smart Fortwo (Smart Fortwo, however, is not the production vehicle from Mercedes-Benz MCC ).

presentation

Johann Tomforde and his team at Daimler-Benz started to design a new urban small car in January 1972, and in January 1989 Nicolas Hayek had announced the idea of designing an original, future-oriented and environmentally friendly car. The start of planning and the feasibility study for such a car took place in January 1993.

This microcar was presented as the Mercedes-Benz MCC ( Micro Compact Car ) in Stuttgart in March 1994 in two versions - the Eco-Sprinter and the Eco-Speedster . The name Micro Compact Car was chosen because Daimler-Benz intended to produce one To build “revolutionary small cars”.

features

The Eco-Sprinter had an electric motor with a power of 40 kilowatts (54 horsepower) and rear-wheel drive ; the Eco-Speedster had a three-cylinder - petrol engine with rear wheel drive.

The spatial concept was novel by a Combi Coupé as microcars was presented by an exterior length of 2.50 meters, an external width of 1.50 meters and a height of 1.50 meters also. The vehicle has rear-wheel drive and automatic transmission , and features air conditioning , power steering and seat belt tensioners .

Mercedes-Benz MCC is based on the NAFA local transport vehicle that Mercedes-Benz had planned in the 1980s. This also had all-wheel steering and sliding doors , which could be used to park in the smallest of parking spaces . These solutions would be optimal, but in series production they are too complex and expensive for a vehicle of this size.

Since a car in the city is occupied by an average of 1.2 people, a two-seater would be perfect for pure city traffic. Such security has never been achieved for cars of this size. This safety and the relatively large amount of space would be made possible by an underfloor motor : the motor and vehicle transmission are completely housed below the passenger cell.

With the Eco-Sprinter , the roof contains solar cells that provide electricity for the ventilation fan even when the vehicle is stationary.

The roof of the Eco-Speedster can be removed. For safety reasons, the windshield frame is reinforced and there is an integrated roll-over device .

Serial production

Micro Compact Car AG ( MCC AG ) was founded in Biel / Bienne on April 27, 1994 as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and the Swiss Society for Microelectronics and the Watch Industry ( SMH ).

Originally, Mercedes-Benz held 51 percent of the equity and SMH 49 percent. By postponing the planned start of production in the summer of 1998, around 500 million German marks had to be injected, whereupon Mercedes-Benz increased its share to 81 percent. In October 1998, due to a new marketing strategy, Daimler AG took over the remaining 19 percent and was the sole owner of Micro Compact Car Smart GmbH (from 2002 Smart GmbH ).

The Smart Fortwo, produced since 1998 ( Smart City Coupé until 2004 ), is a modified version of the Mercedes-Benz MCC .
