Previous model Mercedes-Benz W 15
successor Mercedes-Benz W 120

The Mercedes-Benz 170 V (internal designation: W 136 series ) is a passenger car from Mercedes-Benz . It was presented together with types 260 D and 170 H in February 1936 in Berlin at the 26th  International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition (IAMA).

Daimler-Benz continued to build the W 136 as the only pre-war car model after the Second World War . In 1953 it was replaced by the completely redesigned W 120 , for which Mercedes-Benz took over the 1.8-liter engine from the 170 S (W 191).

Model history

General

Rear view

The Mercedes-Benz 170 V with four-cylinder - petrol engine M 136 sparked the beginning of 1936 after five and a half years, the 170 (series W 15 with six-cylinder engine ) from. With the same displacement of 1.7 liters, the new model was stronger, technically and stylistically more modern and cheaper than its predecessor. From 1936 to 1942, more than 70,000 copies were produced in various body styles. The 170 V is the most popular pre-war Mercedes-Benz car.

The “V” (like “Vorn”) in the type designation served to distinguish it from the 170 H (W 28) presented at the same time, which had practically the same engine installed in the rear. The 170 H (like "Heck") is the more powerful and improved successor to the 130 (W 23) model presented two years earlier , the first Mercedes-Benz rear-engined car .

Its side-controlled 1.7-liter four-cylinder M 136 engine develops 38 hp (28 kW) at 3400 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 10.2 mkp (100 Nm) at a speed of 1800 rpm. It has a compression of 6.5: 1 and a gasoline consumption of 11 liters per 100 kilometers. The top speed is 108 km / h. The engine, suspended elastically at two points, made the car run smoothly. The helical four-speed gearbox was initially only synchronized in the two upper gears, from 1940 on it was synchronized in all gears . The power is transmitted further backwards via a drive shaft with two joints ( Hardy disks ) to the frame-mounted differential gear of the two-joint swing axle . The front wheels are individually suspended from double transverse leaf springs. Hydraulic lever shock absorbers are located on all wheels . Hydraulically operated drum brakes are installed at the front and rear .

Body styles

The customer could choose from several body variants. The program consisted of the two two- and four-door sedans (" inner links ") and a four-door convertible sedan .

The two four-door models were also supplied as a power hackney with a partition and a luggage rack at the rear. There were also two- and four-door open touring cars, the two-seat Cabriolet A and the two-door, four-seat Cabriolet B. In these models, the luggage was stowed from the inside in the trunk.

In the two-seater Roadster , a thinly padded two-seater bench is hidden under a large flap behind the seats - the so-called “ mother-in-law's seat ”. The spare wheel is in a recess on the rear of all models.

Also on offer were: delivery vans with loading platform or box body, ambulances and patrol cars as well as bucket seat vans for the mountain rescue service , police and armed forces as Mercedes-Benz L 301 .

Special types: off-road sports cars and wood gasifiers

A side branch of the 170er development were the Kübelwagen . The all-wheel drive types 170 VG (off-road) and 170 VL (four-wheel steering) . The evolution of these types was built as the G5 between 1938 and 1941 as a "colonial and hunting vehicle". These vehicles were primarily intended for export.

Special off-road sports cars were built for the popular testing of new models in “cyclo-cross” reliability drives or races in the 1930s - two-seater roadsters with a lowered, very light body made of magnesium and fenders made of aluminum. These measures resulted in a weight saving of up to 260 kilograms.

In 1936/37 they were called the 170 VR , still based on the standard roadster, only equipped with larger wheels, stronger springs and a different translation. In 1938/39 the more powerful 170 VS or SV , displacement 1912 cm³, with 50 or 60 hp (37 and 44 kW) power at 3600 rpm - depending on whether the engine had one or two carburettors. The maximum speed with them was 110/112 km / h. The final and most powerful of this series, the internally W 149 designated 200 V , displacement 2007 cc, made 53 or 64 HP (39 kW or 47) and ran up to 120 km / h. The consumption was 13 l / 100 km.

A very different purpose filled the with wood gas generator provided 170 VG . Built between 1939 and 1942, it was independent of petrol, which was hardly available for civilian use during the war. Its engine developed 22 hp (16 kW) at 3200 rpm, and the top speed was 80 km / h. The spare wheel was attached to the roof. Consumption: 15 kilograms of wood per 100 kilometers, reserve 30 kilograms. The gas generator system developed by Daimler-Benz with "cross-flow gasification and mixing valve" was also available for subsequent installation. It worked with all kinds of coal, peat, coke, anthracite and charcoal and cost 1,000 Reichsmarks .

More than 90,000 vehicles had been built up until the end of car production in 1942. The Mercedes star was initially located directly on the radiator, the radiator screw connection was under the bonnet. In 1937 the car got a slightly differently shaped radiator, the filler opening was again accessible from the outside and the star was given its usual place on the radiator screw connection.

Post-war production at Mercedes-Benz began in May 1946: first the box vans and small flatbed trucks were built again, from July 1947 the 170 V sedan , followed by a diesel variant in May 1949, the 170 D with the OM 636 engine . Unlike before the war, however, there were no longer any civil convertible versions; the four-door sedan was the only model available.

In 1951 and 1952, an open version called the 170 D OTP was also produced for use by authorities . OTP stands for Open Touring Car Police . The 170 D OTP had four doors and was only equipped with blinds and a thin flutter top. According to its area of operation for the police and the Federal Border Police , all OTPs were painted in the pine green used by the police at the time . Only a few vehicles for the Berlin police were given the gray-blue color used there ( RAL 5008). Despite the D in the official name 170 D OTP , the OTP had an externally accessible trunk, which already identified it as 170 Da . In addition, it already had a few other technical details that are actually only found in the 170 Db . The Mercedes Benz V 170 S OMP (Open Police Vehicle) with eight seats was also manufactured in small numbers at that time .

In May 1950 the 170 V and 170 D were given a larger displacement and thus increased performance. Driving safety has been improved through a wider track on the rear axle and the installation of telescopic shock absorbers and stronger brakes. Comfort was also improved: the seats and interior width of the passenger compartment were enlarged, the trunk was now easily accessible from the outside, and ventilation panels on the front windows protected against drafts. To distinguish them from the original models, the improved variants were internally named 170 Va and 170 Da .

In May 1952, both models were revised again: the 170 Vb and 170 Db models were given an even wider track at the rear, wider, now one-piece bumpers, an enlarged windscreen with an internally lined wiper drive and horizontal ventilation slots in the bonnet instead of the previously inclined ones. Both models were produced until August 1953; the types 170 SV and 170 SD followed them.

A total of almost 140,000 Mercedes-Benz 170 Vs were built between 1936 and the end of series production in 1953. In addition, there were almost 34,000 units of the 170 D , the first diesel car of the post-war period.

Conversions in the GDR

In the shortage economy of the early GDR , pre-war vehicles were preserved for as long as possible and vehicles involved in accidents were repaired as well as possible. In the Schwarze body shop in Görlitz , around 20 Mercedes-Benz 170 Vs were used as the basis for conversions from 1956 to 1961. They received the more contemporary body of the Wartburg 311 , which was extended by hand and adapted to the base vehicle. The distinctive fake radiator of the 170 V was retained, the radiator had to be reduced in size. In addition to being used as taxis, at least one convertible is also known.
