The Mercedes-Benz 207 series (sales name: E-Class Coupé or E-Class Cabriolet ) is an upper middle class passenger car from Mercedes-Benz that was built from 2009 to 2017.

It replaced the CLK-Class of the 209 series and was available as a Coupé ( C 207 ) and Cabriolet ( A 207 ). The sedan and station wagon versions formed the independent 212 series as the W 212 and S 212 .

history

The E-Class Coupé was presented at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2009 and has been available from dealerships since May 9th. The E-Class Cabriolet was available since March 27, 2010; The introduction was originally planned for autumn 2009, but due to the economic crisis this date was postponed by a few months. The slogan "E-Class Coupé. Object of Desire ”and the convertible with the“ E-Class Cabriolet. It doesn't follow a trend, it dictates. ”In January 2013, the revised versions of the Coupé and Cabriolet variants were presented, which were launched on May 18, 2013.

As in the CLK-Class , which was based entirely on the floor pan of the then current C-Class and which was only optically based on the E-Class , the C-Class floor pan was still used in the 207 series . From a technical point of view, only around 60% of the Coupé came from the E-Class sedan. The rest came from the C-Class of the 204 series . This can be seen, for example, in the fact that only the suspension variants of the C-Class were available and the Airmatic air suspension was reserved exclusively for the sedan or the T-model.

The E-Class Coupé has a C w value of 0.24 and was thus one of the most streamlined production vehicles in the world at the time, behind the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and the GM EV1 .

Changes during the model years

Mercedes-Benz E 200 BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (2011-2013)

In the productions from December 2010, the LED daytime running lights were replaced by an LED strip and the design was therefore adapted to that of the sedan and the T-model (see above). The previous shape of the boomerang was installed by June 2011. The AMG sports package received a design-specific LED bar. The cabriolet was given a further soft top variant in the color red.

Since January 2011, the exterior sports package familiar from the sedan and T-model has also been offered for the coupé and cabriolet .

From April 2011 the vehicles received the steering wheel from the CLS class .

All coupés and convertibles produced from October 2011 had LED daytime running lights as standard.

On June 1, 2013, the revised Coupés and Cabriolets of the E-Class were introduced.

Since October 2013, the coupé has been optionally available with 4MATIC all - wheel drive . This is reserved for the E 350 Coupé .

With the 2015 model year, which was delivered from September 2014, the E 300 and E 350 were discontinued. Only the E 350 4MATIC Coupé was retained. The new E 320 with a 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine and an output of 200 kW (272 hp) replaced the two omitted versions. The E 500 filled henceforth the Euro-6 emissions standard. This also applied to the four-cylinder diesel engines, which had to be converted to BlueTEC technology. The 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission was optionally available for the E 220 BlueTEC and the E 250 BlueTEC , and from then on was also standard for the E 350 BlueTEC, which had an output of 5 kW (8 hp) .

Standard equipment

The standard equipment has almost identical features as in the sedan and T-model . One difference is that all rear lights, including the turn signals, have LED technology. The series for the Coupé and Cabriolet includes the Agility Control chassis with selective damping system, belt feeders for the front seats and the Easy Entry system , in which the entire front seat can be moved forwards so that rear passengers can get in and out more easily. The seats in the rear are two individual seats, with a shelf with a cup holder between the seats. The car has 17-inch light-alloy wheels with nine double spokes as standard (exception: E 500 : five spokes 18 "), chrome trim all around and a three-spoke steering wheel and a gear lever with nappa leather cover.

In the Coupé and Cabriolet, the Elegance and Avantgarde equipment lines only refer to the interior and offer different types of upholstery and leather as well as trim.

The Exterior Sports package, which has been available since the beginning of 2012, includes front and rear aprons and side skirts in AMG look from the AMG sports package, 18-inch light-alloy wheels with five spokes, enlarged and perforated brake discs at the front and the sportier Direct Control suspension with lowered body.

The AMG sports package contains 18-inch light-alloy wheels with six double spokes, AMG styling on the front, side skirts and rear, AMG steering wheel, brushed aluminum pedal system, large, perforated brake discs, speed-sensitive sports steering, multi-contour seats and black headlining.

The E-Class Cabriolet is the first convertible to have a so-called aircap , which essentially consists of two parts: a wind louvre above the windshield that can be extended by six centimeters and a three-way adjustable wind deflector between the headrests of the rear seats. In addition, a neck heater known as Airscarf is built into the headrests of the front seats . This ensures that the heat stays in the interior at speeds of up to 160 km / h and there is hardly any turbulence.

Engines and gears

In terms of engines, the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY as diesel and E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY , E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 500 as petrol engines were initially offered significantly fewer engines than in the sedan and T-model. With the introduction of the convertible in mid-January 2010, the coupé also received two new entry-level engines. These are the petrol E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY and the diesel E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY .

In April 2011, the engine range for the Coupé and Cabriolet was expanded to include a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine, which achieves an output of 252 hp and is therefore a small V6 petrol engine. This model is called the E 300 BlueEFFICIENCY and it is the same engine that is used in the E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and has now been throttled here. In addition, the V6 diesel engine OM 642 was replaced by the more powerful, revised version OM 642 LS . At the same time, the 5G-Tronic and the 7G-Tronic were replaced by the 7G-Tronic Plus and an automatic start-stop system was installed, with the exception of the E 500 , which was delivered with the 7G-Tronic until it was replaced in September 2011 . In addition, the CGI extension in the model designation is omitted for direct-injection gasoline engines . Coupé and Cabriolet receive the steering wheel of the second generation of the CLS-Class .

In September 2011, the 5.5-liter V8 gasoline engine in the E 500 was replaced by the 4.7-liter, turbo-charged V8 direct injection engine with 408 hp in the E 500 BlueEFFICIENCY .

With the facelift in May 2013, the engine range changed, in some cases significantly. While the four-cylinder petrol engines are now new developments and produce 135 kW (184 hp) in the E 200 and 155 kW (211 hp) in the E 250 from a displacement of 2.0 liters , the previous six-cylinder petrol engines remained unchanged. A new addition was the 3.0-liter V6 biturbo in the 207 series in the E 400 with an output of 245 kW (333 hp), which, like the four-cylinder, meets the Euro 6 standard. It is the first six-cylinder gasoline engine from Mercedes-Benz to be charged.

In the case of the diesel engines, the consumption of the four-cylinder has been slightly reduced, while the six-cylinder has been slightly modified and the urea injection technology called BlueTEC has been added to reduce emissions and comply with the Euro 6 standard.

Security technology

The E-Class should take on the pioneering role in terms of safety. A large number of driver assistance systems , extensive passive safety elements and advanced pedestrian protection are finding their way into the E-Class .

The standard elements include an extremely stable passenger cell, especially on the sides of the vehicle, front airbags that trigger in two stages depending on the severity, side airbags, window airbags, knee airbags and, for the first time, pelvic airbags (introduced by Mercedes as a pelvisbag), an active bonnet, which is activated in the event of a crash after a pedestrian accident in the rear area by 50 mm and thus offers the pedestrian a larger crumple zone, an improved pre-safe (accident prevention system) with automatic closing of the side windows and, if necessary, the sunroof as well as the drowsiness warning Attention Assist .

The safety technology can be expanded with numerous special equipment such as an automatic emergency braking function, an improved distance control system Distronic , a BAS Plus brake assistant that controls by means of radar , an intelligent night vision assistant with pedestrian recognition, an intelligent light system with adaptive high beam assistant, with traffic sign recognition, a lane departure warning system , a lane change assistant and parking assistant, which are described in more detail below.

Optional extras

The 207 series offers many new developments as special equipment that were first introduced in a Mercedes. Other special equipment was taken over from the S-Class and modified.

General optional extras are seat heating and air conditioning for the driver and front passenger, individual comfort seats in the rear (sedan only), multicontour seats with massage and driving dynamics functions, memory package in which the front seats can be electrically adjusted and the seat positions can be saved, panoramic glass roof, the Keyless Go key-free locking system or a burglary / theft alarm system with towing protection and interior monitoring.

In addition, there are the following special equipment:

Distance radar Distronic Plus

Main article: Distance radar

The Distronic Plus distance radar maintains the distance to the vehicle in front and accelerates independently if the distance increases. What is new about this system is that the vehicle is braked to a standstill if necessary. It also serves to prevent accidents or reduce the severity of the accident by braking the vehicle if a collision is imminent and unavoidable. The automatic emergency braking function is designed in such a way that 1.6 seconds before an unavoidable collision is decelerated with 40% of the braking force and the driver is warned acoustically and visually, 0.6 seconds in advance the vehicle is then braked with maximum deceleration.

Parktronic parking aid with parking guidance

The Parktronic, including parking guidance, makes parking easier by making clearances acoustically and using LED displays inside. The parking guidance provides information on the instrument cluster about the required angle of the steering wheel, the steering angle and the turning points when parking.

Driving dynamics package

(standard on E 500 )

With the driving dynamics package, you can switch from the classic (and standard available) comfort mode to a sport mode. This makes the damping tighter and the engine's response more direct; The shift times are shorter with the optional automatic transmission. There is a button in the center console to switch between the two modes.

Thermotronic air conditioning

Compared to the standard Thermatic, the comfort automatic climate control Thermotronic is divided into three room zones, two areas in the front and one area in the rear. For the first time, three different climate styles can be selected. Diffuse ensures a low air speed while at the same time distributing air over a large area. Medium offers a medium setting and with Focus there is a direct flow of large amounts of air, mainly through air outlets in the middle area.

The system works completely automatically, supported by numerous sensors. Two of them monitor the interior temperature, four the temperature of the air flowing out of the ventilation nozzles and one records the intensity and direction of radiation of the sun. In addition, there is also a dew point and pollutant gas sensor, which automatically activates the circulating air if the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide concentrations are too high , for example during long journeys in tunnels.

There are two control units for control, one in the center console and another for the rear area on the rear part of the tunnel lining. Both display the selected settings, which can be made using rocker switches, via organic light-emitting diodes ( OLED ).

The air distribution is done by ten electric motors and 20 ventilation nozzles. The heating output increased by 10% to 11 kW compared to the previous model. The diesel models and four-cylinder models with gasoline direct injection have a heat exchanger with six heating elements, as their high thermal efficiency means that they do not emit enough heating power at low outside temperatures. The output of the air conditioning compressor, which now works continuously, increased by 5% to more than 8 kW.

Light package / Intelligent Light System with adaptive high beam assistant

Main article: Intelligent Light SystemMain article: Adaptive high beam assistant

The lighting package initially comprises the second level Intelligent Light System with bi-xenon headlights with cornering light function and LED daytime running lights, the fog lights in the front apron are then omitted.

The package also includes the Adaptive High Beam Assistant , in which - controlled by a camera - the low beam is automatically and continuously adjusted so that the light cone ends under the rear lights of the next vehicle in front or is dimmed if there is oncoming traffic. This means that a maximum range of up to 300 meters in low beam is possible. When there is no other vehicle left, the system fades in the high beam continuously and with a smooth transition. There is no sudden change of light for the driver - the driver's eyes can easily adjust to the different lighting.

MercedesSport

The MercedesSport package has been available as an optional extra for the Coupé and Cabriolet since mid-2010 . In the context of the so-called "add-on principle", in contrast to conventional tuning , the original add-on parts are not exchanged. Rather, the individual parts are added to the existing body. There is a choice of spoilers for the front, the side skirts, the rear, a rear apron cover with diffuser optics, covers for the fog lights and 18-inch light alloy wheels in two-tone design. The sports suspension with stiffer dampers lowers the car by up to 15 millimeters. There is also a sports brake system with perforated brake discs. A four-spoke sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, illuminated stainless steel door sill panels and special floor mats are available for the interior.

The new package was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010.

Multimedia systems

Main article: Comand system

Since the end of 2010, the Audio 20 CD can be expanded to include the Navigation 20 , creating a navigation center with entertainment connections and displays such as Reality View Pro.

As the simplest navigation system to start with, the Audio 50 APS is an entertainment system with DVD navigation and 2D map display.

The Comand APS has a 3-D map display and a hard disk, some of which can also be used for your own MP3 files.

From July 2011, the Comand APS, which is subject to a surcharge, was replaced by the COMAND Online NTG 4.5 . With this Internet functions were possible and there was also the possibility of importing speed camera warning data into the navigation system as POIs via SD card (with the NTG 4.5 only a visual warning was possible, not an acoustic one).

The systems can be expanded to include the Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system with 14 speakers and 600 watts of power.

Seats

The standard seats can be upgraded with numerous extensions.

In the actively ventilated front seats, four fans in the seat cushion and backrest draw in cool air from the area under the seat and distribute it below the seat surface.

The multicontour seat introduced in the previous model has been expanded in technical terms. The side panels can now be adjusted by a total of nine centimeters, previously it was only five centimeters. A front air cushion increases the seat depth for the first time by up to five centimeters.

The active multicontour seat is an extension of the multicontour seat. Piezo valves in the air chambers change the volume of the air chambers depending on the steering wheel angle, driving speed and lateral acceleration, which ensures greater lateral support. This seat also has a massage function in the backrest, which consists of seven air chambers.

Track package

The lane package offers a lane keeping and a blind spot assistant. The lane markings are recognized by a camera behind the windshield; if the vehicle leaves the lane unintentionally, a warning is triggered by means of steering wheel vibration.

With Blind Spot Assist, the area behind the vehicle is monitored using radar sensors. If another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area, a red LED lights up in the respective exterior mirror. If the driver starts to change lanes, an acoustic warning is given.
