Mercedes-Benz 300 S is the sales name for a series of coupés and convertibles derived from the 300 sedan model . The two-door cars, known internally as W 188, were presented at the Salon de l'Automobile in Paris in October 1951 .

The Mercedes-Benz 300 S have a wheelbase 15 cm shorter than the sedan chassis. With a total of 760 units produced, a W 188 is rarer than the famous "Gullwing" 300 SL . Over the entire production period, the W 188 was the most expensive vehicle in the Mercedes range.

Together with the 300 sedan, these models were the last passenger cars from Daimler-Benz that were still built on a frame ( chassis ). Since then, more modern passenger car vehicle concepts have had a self-supporting body (e.g. the “Ponton” models ).

300 S (W 188 I)

The vehicles were available as Coupé , Cabriolet A and Roadster . They had the six-cylinder engine of the W 186 sedan with a displacement of 2996 cm³, which with three Solex carburettors now developed 150 hp (110 kW) and accelerated the vehicles up to 175 km / h. From June 1952 to July 1955, 216 Coupés, 203 Cabriolets A (with a lined top) and 141 Roadsters (fully retractable simple top) were produced, some of them with special bodies, e.g. B. from Pininfarina .

300 Sc (W 188 II)

In 1955 the model series was revised and renamed Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc . Chrome-plated rims and other chrome trim, a single-joint swing axle at the rear and, above all, an elaborate direct petrol injection that increased the output by 25 hp, upgraded the vehicles. The designation "injection engine" was written in large letters on the rear bumper . The new engine developed 175 hp (129 kW) and allowed a top speed of 180 km / h. From January 1956 to July 1957, 98 coupés, 49 convertibles A and 53 roadsters were built. The price was raised by 2000 DM to 36,500 DM compared to the previous model (corresponds to approx. 93,000 euros today).
