The Harman Becker Automotive Systems GmbH is part of the automotive division of the US company Harman International Industries , which, since March 2017, Samsung is one. The company is a member of Südwestmetall .

history

The current company emerged from the German manufacturer of car radio and navigation systems, Becker. This company was founded in 1949 from a repair workshop in Pforzheim, Baden . The founder was Max Egon Becker . In 1995 the US company Harman International took over the company.

The company with its headquarters in Karlsbad near Karlsruhe and other locations in the USA and Hungary developed and integrated complete infotainment systems worldwide. The range of products ranged from navigation systems, voice control and HMI to audio and entertainment technologies. Harman Becker Automotive Systems has been a supplier for Mercedes-Benz since it was founded , but also manufactured products for brands such as Audi , Porsche , Peugeot , Hyundai , Ferrari , Rolls-Royce , BMW and Mini . Harman Becker had 28 locations worldwide in the following countries: Germany, USA, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Hungary, Canada, Mexico, South Africa (until 2008), Japan, South Korea and China. Since January 11, 2010, "Harman Becker Automotive Systems GmbH" has withdrawn from the market for mobile navigation. The trademark rights for "Becker Traffic Assist", "Becker Traffic Assist Pro" etc. were given to United Navigation , which became insolvent in 2017 and will cease business operations. The Falk and Becker brands were sold under their umbrella. Currently (2018) there are still remnants of navigation devices on the market, for which there will no longer be any free map updates.

Since 2008, as part of the strategy of the parent company Harman International, more and more parts of the company have been relocated to low-wage countries , so that the number of employees at the German locations fell from 3800 in 2008 to 2250 in 2013. The Hechingen, Villingen-Schwenningen, Schaidt and Hamburg locations (Innovative Systems, sold to Neusoft China in 2008 as Neusoft Technology Solutions ) were either closed or sold. In November 2016 it was agreed that Samsung Electronics would take over the Harman Group for eight billion US dollars.
