The Harman International Industries Inc. in Stamford in the State of Connecticut is an international group of audio accessories manufacturers, HiFi specialists and electronic equipment suppliers . The company was founded and named after Sidney Harman . Harman has been a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics since March 2017 .
chronology
Originally the company traded as Jerrold Corporation from 1962 and was renamed Harman International in 1969 .
Since the Consumer Group was separated from the Automotive Systems Group in 2005, the group has been active in three business areas: The Automotive Systems Group designs, produces and sells loudspeakers , audio devices and infotainment systems for automobiles; the Consumer Systems Group designs, produces and sells audio and video systems and computer accessories for the home environment, and the Professional Group designs, produces and sells IT and loudspeaker systems for concert buildings, sports stadiums and airports, as well as audio equipment for recording studios, radio stations and cinemas.
Michael Mauser has been CEO since April 1, 2020 . He succeeds Dinesh Paliwal , who will serve as advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors until the end of the year. The chairman has been Samsung manager Young Sohn since the takeover by Samsung in 2017 .
In 2007 Harman International Industries was to be bought by the holding company Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) and GS Capital Partners, which belongs to Goldman Sachs, for almost eight billion dollars, whereby the company name should be retained. However, the financial investors did not carry out the takeover due to the alleged "severe deterioration in the company's assets" after the contract was signed. After this news, the company's share price collapsed. In a subsequent settlement, KKR bought Harman shares on a small scale in an unsuccessful attempt to absorb the falling share price and regain the confidence of stock market investors.
Harman was acquired by Samsung Electronics in March 2017 for approx. 8 billion dollars, but remains independent as a subsidiary. Harman now generates a large part of its sales with electronics and software for intelligent cars and autonomous driving.
