history
Hyundai was founded in 1947 by Chung Ju-yung as a construction company. This resulted in the Hyundai Motor Company in 1967, which initially produced the Ford Cortina under license and began developing its own cars in the early 1970s. The first own type, the Hyundai Pony , was presented in 1974 at the 55th Turin Motor Show. From 1982 the Pony 2 was built as a renewed model. The taxi version of the pony was equipped to run on natural gas. Light trucks were also manufactured, and since the mid-1980s heavy trucks and buses. In 1976 the pony began to be exported, initially to Ecuador and from 1978 to Europe (Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece). The first European distribution partner was Moorkens (now Alcopa) in Belgium. Canada and Central America were added in 1983, followed by the USA a year later. Hyundai expanded the model range, the Stellar and Sonata mid-range cars and the Grandeur luxury sedan appeared. While the technology was initially based on Mitsubishi models, Hyundai Motors has been developing its cars exclusively in-house since the 1990s. The millionth Hyundai was manufactured in 1985.
In 1991, Hyundai Motor Deutschland GmbH was founded and is formally based in Neckarsulm . In 2003 a development center was opened in Rüsselsheim , which is operated together with Kia. Development and position on the market
In order to gain a foothold on the European market at the beginning of the 1990s, the Hyundai Motor Company followed an aggressive pricing policy (combined with generous standard equipment), similar to Japanese car manufacturers 20 years earlier, in order to sell the models that were technically inferior to European manufacturers. In particular, small cars and small niche models could be brought to buyers, since prestige played and still does not play a role in these classes .
With the introduction of a new generation of models from 2001 onwards, which brought completely new models such as the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV , the Hyundai Getz small car , the Hyundai Terracan off-road vehicle , the Hyundai Matrix compact van, as well as the successor to the sporty Hyundai Coupé and the mid-range Hyundai Sonata with a greater majority , the vehicles were not only inexpensive, but also achieved a remarkable level of quality - especially when compared to the first Hyundai vehicles available on the European market - even though they overshadow European competitors through still low prices rather than technical highlights could ask. Nevertheless, this generation of models represented a quantum leap , especially in terms of safety-related aspects. Both the Santa Fe and the Getz (the other models mentioned were not tested using this method) achieved four out of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. This result is particularly good for the Hyundai Getz small car, as well-known competing products with the same number of points and stars (e.g. Opel Corsa C, Nissan Micra , Peugeot 206 ) also completed the test at this time .
Also noteworthy for this period of time is the Hyundai Santa Fe, which, as a medium-sized SUV, stood for a future-oriented model policy from Hyundai, as this vehicle segment recorded great growth despite high oil prices and many representatives of well-known European automobile manufacturers until 2007 ( Opel Antara , Peugeot 4007 , Citroën C- Crosser , VW Tiguan ) or 2008 ( Renault Koleos , Ford Kuga ) were not yet available.
At the end of 2004, sales of the Hyundai Tucson finally began, which together with the new generation of the Hyundai Sonata in the first quarter of 2005 stood for the ESP , which was available for the first time in a Hyundai, and for the expansion of passive safety, the active front headrests (Hyundai Sonata; reduces the risk of whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision ) and an expansion of the airbag equipment with two additional windowbags ( head airbags ) encompassing all the rows of seats , which cover the side windows in the event of a side impact and protect the head of the front and rear occupant from injury or this diminish, brought with it. In 2006, just in time for the soccer world championship in Germany, of which Hyundai was the main sponsor, the new edition of the Hyundai Santa Fe (presentation at the Geneva Motor Show ) and the luxury limousine Hyundai Grandeur (the only Hyundai model with eight airbags) followed until the introduction of the Hyundai Veracruz SUV , which is called Hyundai iX55 in Germany (since the beginning of 2009), which has represented the top of the Hyundai passenger car range in Europe to date. The change in the slogan from “Everything included - Hyundai” to “Drive your way” is characteristic of this further development .
In the course of this model and technology offensive, the Hyundai Motor Company also invested several billion euros in the development of its own very modern common rail diesel engines (developed in the Hyundai research center in Rüsselsheim am Main, Germany) with variable turbocharger blade geometry, which makes the displacement range from 1.5 l (for the Hyundai Getz and Accent , several power levels from 88 hp to 110 hp), over 1.6 l (for the Hyundai i30, 116 hp), to 2.0 l (for the Hyundai Sonata, 140 hp) and 2.2 l (increased displacement Version of the 2.0 l for the Hyundai Grandeur and the Hyundai Santa Fe, 155 PS) and modernized the petrol engines (1.6 l R4 , 2.0 l R4, 2.7 l V6 ; especially variable camshaft timing). These newly developed 4-cylinder diesel engines are also used in various models of the sister brand Kia . In addition, a newly developed 3.0-l V6 diesel engine is planned for the Hyundai Veracruz for the European market, which will generate 239 hp and thus in a performance class with the Mercedes M-Class (ML 320 CDI), the BMW E70 3.0d, Audi Q7 and VW Touareg 3.0 TDI ranked.
These developments clearly point to the aim of the Hyundai brand, which wants to leave the discounter image behind and become a premium supplier to be taken seriously . These efforts are also underpinned by the fact that Hyundai wants to test with the luxury sedan Genesis and its coupé offshoots in the USA, how it is about the market opportunities of a premium brand - like Honda with Acura in 1984, Toyota with Lexus in 1989 and Nissan with Infiniti (also 1989) demonstrated - stands. The “means to an end” were presented in 2007 in the form of two studies - Hyundai Genesis and Hyundai Genesis Coupé - which were the first with high-tech details such as 6-speed automatic transmission from Aisin Seiki or ZF (also supplies automatic transmissions for BMW , for example ) self-developed V8 - hatchback from Hyundai (Hyundai Genesis) and shine a 3.8-liter V6 petrol engine (Hyundai Genesis Coupe) with 306 hp. On January 8, 2008, the Hyundai Motor Company presented the production version of the Hyundai Genesis in South Korea. It should replace the aging Hyundai Centennial and develop into a serious competitor for German premium suppliers such as Audi , BMW and Mercedes or for the above-mentioned Japanese premium brands, especially on the US market , since Hyundai makes the Genesis cheaper and will offer better equipped and it can keep up technically. In tests by US American trade magazines, the Genesis Sedan scores extremely well (e.g. in the test by Consumer Reports magazine with 92 out of 100 possible points). In addition, Hyundai showed the production version of the Hyundai Genesis Coupé at the New York International Auto Show in March 2008, which will mainly compete against the Infiniti G37 .
Since Hyundai was only able to present a few innovations in Europe in 2007, the brand lost market share. The higher prices of the cars compared to earlier models, which could therefore no longer only be sold based on price, may also have played a role in this development. While the sales figures remained roughly the same in 2008, Hyundai increased sales contrary to the industry trend at the beginning of 2009. This is mainly due to the scrapping premium in Germany. Since all small models of the car brand (up to the compact class) had not been on the market for longer than two years or were only just launched ( Hyundai i20 ) and especially these vehicle classes (micro, small and compact cars) experienced an enormous upswing thanks to the bonus, the Gaining a brand. Hyundai sold 810 percent more i30 in February 2009 than in the same month last year. The sales of the Hyundai i10 rose by over 350 percent.
The semi- hybrid model Elantra LPI Hybrid , in which an electric drive supports a natural gas-powered petrol engine, has been on sale in Korea since July 2009 .
In a representative written survey carried out in Germany in 2010 on the subject of quality and reliability (Auto Bild quality report), prepared by the consumer research company (GfK) on behalf of the specialist magazine Auto Bild , based on 9,278 interviews with drivers, Hyundai came in first, Honda in 2nd place and Audi, Mazda and Toyota in 3rd place.
In 2011, Hyundai was again the winner in the Auto Bild quality report . In the representative written survey carried out by GfK on quality and reliability on behalf of the trade journal Auto Bild on the basis of 8,610 interviews with drivers, Hyundai took first place in a row. Honda, Mazda and Toyota followed in second place, and Škoda came fifth.
At the beginning of 2016, Hyundai presented the Hyundai Ioniq , which is offered as a purely electric car and in 2 hybrid versions (plug-in from mid-2017). The electric version is considered to be one of the most efficient electric cars suitable for everyday use, with the favorable aerodynamics helping.
