The development of the vehicle is based on a design study by the Korean Hyundai Research and Development Center Namyang in Hwaseong from 2007, which was presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main.

The production model was presented for the first time at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2011. The presentation took place at the beginning of March 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show . The official market launch in Germany began with the Hyundai dealers' autumn festival on September 23, 2011, but the first vehicles were already at dealerships in early August.

Initially, the model was exclusively powered by a 103 kW (140 PS) 1.6-liter gasoline engine with direct fuel injection in conjunction with a manual six-speed gearbox or a dual-clutch gearbox , also with six gears. The standard consumption is 6.5 or 6.4 liters per 100 km and that of the 1.6 GDI blue model is 5.9 liters due to the automatic start-stop system.

In autumn 2012, a turbo version of the same engine with 137 kW (186 hp) came onto the market. In North America, the turbo version has an output of 150 kW (204 hp).

A special feature is the door concept of the Veloster, which has a larger door on the driver's side and two doors on the passenger side.

The vehicle was offered on the German market until the end of 2016. In the US market, it was continued in a long model year 2017. The successor model was presented at NAIAS 2018.
