The Hyundai Ioniq is a station wagon from the South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai that is only available with electrified drive variants. The variant with purely electric drive has a battery capacity of 28.5 kWh (until August 2019) or 38.3 kWh (from September 2019). The petrol / electric hybrid drive variant was initially available without a charging socket and with a 1.56 kWh battery, and since mid-2017 with a plug-in hybrid and 8.9 kWh. With a c w value of 0.24, it has one of the lowest in its class. The electric version has a smooth front without a radiator grille.
history
The world premiere of the Ioniq took place in March 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show . The self-sufficient hybrid version has been available since October 2016. The electric version followed a month later, the plug-in hybrid came onto the market in July 2017. The name Ioniq is derived from "ION" for the electric drive and IQ as the English derivative of "unique" in the sense of unique.

Facelift
In summer 2019, a revised version of the Ioniq was presented. This variant also achieved five stars in the NCAP crash test. Inside there is now an 8-inch info display and a 10.25-inch navigation system. The hybrid variants have recuperation and electric parking brakes. The prices were increased slightly. Traffic sign recognition and communication via BlueLink are now also available.
technology
The electric version accelerates to 100 km / h in 9.9 s and thus has a slightly shorter acceleration time than the nominally more powerful hybrid, but is slower with a limited 165 km / h at the top speed of 20 km / h. Consumption is given as 11.5 kWh in the mix per 100 km, which corresponds to an energy equivalent of 1.24 liters of diesel per 100 km, the maximum range is 280 km in the NEDC . Hyundai works closely with the South Korean battery manufacturers LG Chem and SK Innovation .
In the hybrid version, the electric drive is located next to the combustion engine on the dual clutch transmission. In practical terms, this special form of the DSG can not only engage two gears at the same time and couple between the two and the engine as required (= no interruption of tractive power), but also couple both combustion and electric engines. In this way, the electric motor can deliver power in parallel with the combustion engine. This makes the Ioniq a parallel hybrid .
Load capacity
The electric version was the first vehicle on the European market to have a fast-charging CCS Combo 2 DC charging connection as standard equipment, with a capacity of up to 70 kW. With the first model with 28 kWh, an empty battery could be charged to 80% in 23 minutes. With the new model with 38.3 kWh, an empty battery at a 50 kW charging station can be charged to 80% in 57 minutes; with a charging station with at least 70 kW or 100 kW, this takes 54 minutes. After a charge of 80%, the charging speed drops to protect the battery.
AC charging at a Schuko socket with 10 A (2.3 kW) takes a maximum of 12 hours; at a wall charging station with 32 A (single-phase, 6.6 kW) it takes a maximum of 4.5 hours.

Furnishing
The Ioniq is supplied in different equipment variants. The lists go from the simple to the maximum equipment:
Germany
- Trend (only with Ioniq Elektro incl. Radio and navigation system)
- Style (including seat heating, radio and navigation system, with Ioniq Elektro with heat pump)
- Premium (including seat heating, radio and navigation system, with Ioniq Elektro with heat pump)
An on-board computer and automatic air conditioning are standard equipment in all models.

While in Germany only the color or paintwork metallic or mineral effect and a glass roof in the individual equipment variants can be selected as accessories, in Austria it is possible to design the vehicle more finely. For example, the steering wheel heating and seat heating for the rear seats can be ordered via two winter packages, a blind spot and cross-traffic warning system via the safety package, the leather interior fittings via the leather package and the memory function and seat ventilation for the front seats. In addition, metal applications for the pedals, the front parking aid, the sliding glass roof and the heat pump can be ordered separately.
In Germany, the premium equipment has the full range of accessories, apart from the choice of color and sliding glass roof. In contrast to the trend, the Style equipment line has a heat pump.
Every vehicle in the Elektro series has an emergency charging cable and a type 2 charging cable 20 A and 4 m in length (Germany; in Austria only emergency charging cable).
warranty
Hyundai grants a 5-year guarantee for the Ioniq with unlimited mileage on the vehicle (3 years for car audio including navigation or multimedia as well as for type 2 charging cables) and 8 years or 200,000 km on the battery, whichever comes first.
Registration numbers
In the first sales year of 2016, 627 Hyundai Ioniqs were newly registered in Germany, 80 of them in the electric version. In the following year there were 2,776 vehicles, of which 262 were plug-in hybrids and 881 were all-electric vehicles. Of the 5,068 Hyundai Ioniq newly registered in 2018, 2,328 vehicles were hybrid, 1,045 were plug-in hybrids and 1,695 were electric. In 2019, 1,527 of the 4,165 newly registered Ioniqs were for the electrically powered version.
Since the market launch in 2016 up to and including December 2019, a total of 12,636 Hyundai Ioniq have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2018 was the most successful sales year with 5,068 units.
Awards
On March 31, 2016, the Red Dot Design Award was presented by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen e. V. for the Ioniq for the outstanding design.
On January 25, 2018, the Hyundai Ioniq Elektro was announced as the overall winner in the ADAC EcoTest 2017 with 105 out of a possible 110 points .
Similar competitors
Toyota has been building the Toyota Prius since 1997 , with the Hyundai Ioniq, Hyundai launched a hybrid and plug-in hybrid mid-range car very similar to the Prius IV in 2016, which with its dimensions and pronounced wedge shape is not only visually but also aerodynamically is very similar to the Prius IV.
Nissan has been offering the Nissan Leaf with a purely electric drive since 2010 , with its power consumption of 17-18 kWh being relatively well above that of the Ioniq (13.8 kWh) and the Ioniq with a comparable battery capacity (38.3 kWh for the Ioniq, 40 kWh for the Leaf) achieves a higher range (WLTP 311 km for the Ioniq, 270 km for the Leaf). Only the much more expensive Leaf model with a 62 kWh battery and a WLTP range of 385 km surpasses the Ioniq.
