Galloper II innovation

The Hyundai Galloper , which was manufactured in the model variants Exceed , Innovation and Van / Wagon by Hyundai Precision & Industry Company Limited from 1991 to 2003, was a license production of the Mitsubishi Pajero in the last development stage L040. The Hyundai Precision & Industry Company Limited is part of the Hyundai Group, has with the automaker Hyundai Motor Company but nothing to do. For this reason, the Hyundai emblem was never found on the vehicle. In the countries in which the model was not sold through the respective Hyundai general importer, Galloper was run as an independent brand. The vehicles were therefore sold there through individual dealers. In Germany and Spain the model was also marketed as the Mitsubishi Galloper . In Iceland the models with automatic transmission were sold as Galloper TCI .

Model history

The Galloper was introduced by HDPIC in 1991 and manufactured in Korea under the Mitsubishi license of the first Mitsubishi Pajero . The Galloper was introduced in Germany in 1998. The sale took place in Germany through the Mitsubishi dealers, who also carried out service and maintenance work. In Austria, the Galloper was sold through the Hyundai dealer network (including repair / maintenance, warranty work, spare parts supply). In 2001 production was stopped.

technology

Rear-wheel drive, switchable front-wheel drive when stationary (automatic freewheel hubs )

Structure: Ladder frame with screwed-on sheet steel body

The fact that the Galloper was just a Pajero I that had been modified in detail was particularly evident from the technology, which was sometimes out of date at the time. The all-wheel drive system largely corresponded to what was also common in 2013 for actually off-road vehicles, but was less comfortable to use than that of SUVs with restricted off-road capabilities. The service life of the manual transmission was difficult to calculate: some vehicles lasted over 250,000 km, others less than 40,000 km. The turbodiesel engine also often caused problems , the glow plug system of which in combination with the immobilizer led to many a start failure. The rust-prone body was also a problem on the original, and on the Galloper as well.

Series

The Hyundai Galloper was produced in two different series.

There was a series that had a leaf-sprung rear axle. This design was mainly used in the early stages of model production for models that were equipped with a four-cylinder engine. The second series was equipped with a very robust coil suspension and was mainly used in the models with six-cylinder engines and in the diesel engines with turbochargers and intercoolers.

body

The Hyundai Galloper was produced as both a three-door and a five-door model. The three-door is 4.09 meters long, 1.78 meters wide and 1.87 meters high, the five-door is 4.69 × 1.78 × 1.90 meters.

Engine variants

The vehicle was offered with two engine variants:

4-cylinder diesel engine

This engine variant was a swirl chamber engine with turbocharging and charge air cooling. It had 2500 cc and 73 kW (99 PS).

The same engine was also available without charge air cooling with 65 kW (88 hp).

6-cylinder petrol engine

The 6-cylinder 3.0 l petrol engine is considered to be relatively robust. It ran on regular gasoline, had 104 kW (141 hp) and hydraulic valve lifters .

Furnishing

The Galloper had power steering and a driver airbag , a passenger airbag was not available. ABS was only available in the Exceed version with wide wheels, an automatic transmission only in the 3.0 V6. In the five-door model with a long wheelbase, two fold-out individual seats behind the rear bench were part of the standard equipment (seven-seater). There was also a version with two benches along the direction of travel in the cargo area and a high roof, this had a total of 10 seats. A passenger transport license would actually have been necessary for the vehicle in Germany, but the description in the vehicle registration document corresponded to the 9-seater. When sales began in Germany in 1998, the cheapest version of the Galloper cost 33,600 DM (17,179 euros).
