George Raymond "Ray" Stevenson (born May 25, 1964 in Lisburn , Northern Ireland ) is a British actor .

Life

Ray Stevenson is the son of a British Air Force pilot and an Irish mother. He grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne . He started out as an interior designer before studying acting at Bristol Old Vic Theater School at the age of 27 .

Stevenson plays mainly in television series and films, but also as a supporting actor in movies such as King Arthur . His breakthrough as an actor came with the lead role of Titus Pullo in the television series Rome . In Punisher: War Zone , which in 2008 published Marvel - comic film version, he took on the titular role of the Punisher . The film flopped in the United States and was therefore released directly on DVD in Germany. Despite the failure, he got another role in a Marvel film in 2011, in Thor he embodied the role of Volstagg as well as in the sequels Thor - The Dark Kingdom and Thor: Day of Decision .

In 2011 Stevenson played the musketeer Porthos in The Three Musketeers . In April 2012, Stevenson got a recurring role in the seventh season of the thriller series Dexter . Stevenson played the role of Blackbeard in the third and fourth seasons of Black Sails in 2016 .

Stevenson was married to actress Ruth Gemmell from 1997 and divorced in 2005. Stevenson has two sons (* 2007 and * 2011) with his current girlfriend, an Italian anthropologist, whom he met while filming in Rome.
